Welcome Sam Banks

The thing I like about Banks over Hugo, MJ etc is I see footballing nous , I think Sam will benefit greatly from a big preseason in the gym and a few visits to our wonderful sponsor KFC for a bit of fried chicken and deep fried chips

Playing half back he looked ok defensively. Obviously we would prefer him getting more of the ball, hopefully that will come.

I wouldnt be against him playing again next week, but otherwise maybe it would be a chance for Trezise to come in.

Banks has played a lot of entitled footy in the 2's this season. If I'm being honest, I don't think he had done enough for a call up to the 1's, but circumstances conspired to present him with an opportunity.

His performances over these 2 games have played out pretty much as expected. Quite simply he isn't being afforded the time or space that he's given in the VFL, and that has impacted his decision making and execution. Not an indictment on the kid, but hopefully a bit of a wake up call.

So yeah, I think it was really important to give Banks a taste, to help him identify what he needs to work on to become the player he thinks he is. But at this stage, a taste is all he should get. He needs to go back to the 2's and spend his time there hunting the ball in pressure situations, rather than cruising around thinking he's some sort of misunderstood genius quarterback. (Harsh? Maybe.)

When he fixes this, he'll be on the way to becoming a serious player.

I hope he gets another week at least.

I like it that he thinks he's a genius. And I like it that he can see as clearly as anybody that he's an idiot at AFL level.

And I love the all new desperation. I have been surprised and buoyed by Banks's physical strength and defensive positioning in the contest. Does not get lost. Disciplined. Blue *smile* collar, if you don't mind, Umpire.

As of the end of R17 2023 it would be fair to say that Sam Banks had presented himself as the worst ball user in the AFL. He wasn't that by the end of R18.

At any rate I think we can nearly all agree that Sam Banks is currently a terrible ball user. I'd love to see this year how that plays out.

Good post & defence of Sam big Jack but he’s had a taste. Let’s have a look at another youngster in Trezise who could play that role. Ideally we want to find a player who can help us in our quest for finals. May be premature but I don’t think Banks is ready for AFL at the pointy end yet on what I am seeing.

Does Banks actually understand that he’s a Super Hunk?
Unfortunately atm he’s playing like a Super Hunk of vanilla slice

Keep him away from Balmey then. Lead him not into temptation.

Each deserving kid should be given a couple of games this year to show their skills. We've seen MRJ and Banks in the last two games -- now for some others.

If Banks goes out this week and the past fortnight is all he experiences of AFL in 2023, as the cliche goes, he'll have learned more in those two matches than in a season of VFL footy.

Bring on the Guinness diet and a heavy contest focus!

What I mean is that this thread joins a long list of writing a young player off far too early !

Banks looks to have a bright future. Looks an AFL type if not yet at the level.

Loose ball swoops and dishes; clean. Runs. Smart. When he adjusts to the pace will drop 55m kicks to such advantage that not even Ben Minson could avoid marking them.

If you only ever want to read positive comments, perhaps stick to the RFC website.
This is a forum for opinions and discussions. Not all of them accurate but always thought provoking.

Banks is meant to be a very good user.
Haven't seen it at AFL level, even with his kick outs.
Is this just him adjusting to the speed and AFL level pressure?
ie It's always there in the VFL, right?

I never said I only want to listen to positive comments. Questioning negative comments is not only wanting to listen to positive ones.
What I said was that some on this site and elsewhere continually write players off too quickly.
If that isn’t a view you share that’s fine but I’m not advocating an echo chamber here, just expressing an opinion.
There are lots and lots of examples of players at RFC and at other clubs who take time to develop and in so many cases they are criticised whilst they develop. Sam Banks may or may not develop into a good player but we cannot possibly know if he will after 2 games.
