Claremont was desperate to get him down at the start of the year and he came, but went back home after a few weeks of pre-season. He had another go later, playing three games before heading home again, then arrived in Melbourne for the draft combine last month in a pair of thongs. Handed a pair of runners and some boots he ran and jumped well, but decided after the repeat speed test that he was a bit too sore for the other endurance tests, jumping on a plane to Darwin and kicking 10 goals that weekend.

Did I? Isn't this what the article was "inferring"?

He went home sure. But he was flying and on top-of-the-world each time - hardly struggling. He is smart this one, show a little bit then get off the stage while the audience screams for an encore.

when will we learn our lesson about speculative indiginous players....
tambling, JON, taylor, peterson, at least 3 others???
leave them to other clubs to take the risk and stick with home grown footballers who may be slower, shorter and less flashy but are genuine footballers who will settle into the AFL life.

... and still end up getting delisted (Thompson, Farmer etc etc). Our record with JON, Murphy and Tambling is no worse than our record with Hernaman, Pettifer, Fiora or Ryan.

Taylor, Petterson and Roberts at least played. Can't say the same for Contin or Jakobi.

delisting guys for lack of talent is one thing
delisting them for not settling in and wanting to go home is another
how many indig guys are on our list?

Same as the number of Queenslanders. Perhaps we should stop taking banana-benders because Knobel, Weller, Morrison, Raines all failed to work out and McGuane is only average. Perhaps we should stop drafting guys over 200cm because our record with them is even worse?

The majority of draft picks must fail. That is just mathematics. Indigneous kids are more visible and easily grouped. Doesn't mean they are less likely to succeed. With 2% of the population indigineous and 12% of AFL players indigineous the evidence is that they are outrageously successful - probably more than any other group you'd care to name.

How about we just make a case by case decision based on the player?

:rofl Quality stuff, Madison Avenue. You have an ability to spin things that TW himself would be proud of. Reckon the alarm bells are pretty loud with this kid.

Surely you jest.

He left Claremont after debuting in the Colts and kicking 4. Being promoted straight to the reserves and his third game was a haul of 8 goals in the Colts. His final performance before going was an 11 mark effort with 12 shots on goal. It wasn't getting hard - he was doing it easy.

On this basis I doubt any club will pick him up. Maybe a rookie spot somewhere, but that is warning bells, make that attack sirens all over the place. Personally had enough of players going walkabout. You either want it or you don't. He doesn't appear to really want it.

I agree with your comments. We need players who are 100% committed to our cause.

Who has gone walkabout? Tambling didn't. Muprhy didn't. JON didn't. Petterson, Roberts and Gilligan might have had problems with professionalism (diet and drink) but none absented themselves. The only player who went missing was Taylor and he was a known risk from day 1 with pre-existing criminal conviction (and jail time) and a further trial to face - not to mention having walked out on other junior teams.

All Manson has done is accept an invite to come down to Perth for a few weeks and not agree to stay on longer. Perfectly understandable when you have nowhere to live, no job, no means of support in Perth.

Some pretty lazy stereotypes in this thread.

How do you know he had nowhere to live, no job offers and no means of support?

He may well have. But they weren't asking him to simply play footy. They were asking him to move home, move thousands of miles from home, to play footy for an amateur team. He wasn't being asked to come and have a kick for the local park team. Not everyone moves out of home as a 17/18 year old to play WAFL colts.
