Umpires

Just wished they had a closer look at how taggers play Martin.

Taggers seem to get away with a lot against the elite players. I keep saying they need to pay holding the man more often but it doesn't look like it will ever happen. You can bump a player off the ball but not hold them, it is that simple.

Any chance of paying a hold against McDonald? He spent the entire game with his arms around Dusty's waist.

If they had of, Martin would not be getting pathetically spoken about again in relation to the tribunal.

"Where a player is in possession of the football and has not had prior opportunity, a field umpire shall award a free kick if the player is able to, but does not, make a genuine attempt to correctly dispose of the football when legally tackled".

So when I bloke tries to pick up the ball, and two or three jump on him, what is he supposed to do? My understanding of the rules is that there are only two ways to dispose of the ball. Either kick it or handball it. How do you do that from under three blokes?

Hullaluya.
About time they got called out.
Last nights efforts were close to the worse ive seen.
Its time to highlight there mistakes.

I don't think it's a new thing, remember the 'crow throw?' That was 90s I reckon and didn't Ted Whitten get his players to throw it when the umpire was out of position?

I think players were picked up more in the past. Nowadays its just accepted, umps likely allow it because it keeps the ball moving. I mean did anyone see Butler's over the head handball against Adelaide in the final qtr last night? It was a blatant throw and yet Eddie Maguire praised it. Almost all handpasses over the head are throws. Dangerfield does it all the time. Both hands moving, no connection with a fist most times. The ball is shovelled out of contested situations so many times the umps just ignore it.

I always thought (like I think TOT posted) that one hand had to be stationery and the other strike the ball with a clenched fist for it to be a handball. Not sure there is a definition of a handpass in the rule book.

I don't think we have anyone that does it consistently, shed does some over his head stuff at times that is pretty dubious.

That was changed some time ago I think. I'm pretty sure all you need to do now is have the ball in one hand and hit it with the other.
Does that mean both can be moving in the same direction? ala Treloar?

What is propelling the ball the hit with the fist or the movement of the hand with the ball?

It is a throw. ...thats all there is to it.
So...throwing is defacto allowed.
Like i wrote the other day. ..maybe just allow throws and move on. Play on . Does it really matter?

And....to penalise a player who has had zero prior opportunity is madness. Just stupid.
Just penalizes the only player going for the ball.

Went to the rulebook:

Definition is:

Handball: the act of holding the football in one hand and disposing of it by hitting it with the clenched fist of the other hand.

By that it can be overhead, around the back or any other way you like.

The tricky bit is that you have to hit the ball with the clenched fist of the other hand.

While I have no problem with the hand holding the ball not being stationary, I think they need to get a bit stricter on making sure the other hand actually propels the ball.

Listening to Razor Ray on SEN, I'm not sure whether he should be a stand up comedian, or a politician........he reckons the umpires in the Cats v Pies game "had a very good game" :rotfl1
I reckon they had a terrible game, they let the Pies throw the ball all night, and paid them 22 free kicks to the Cats 10.

Biggest glaring issue is the standard in umpiring.
I reckon you use that up you'll start seeing a better quality game.
Biggest the AFL thinks the umpiring is great

I don't subscribe to the theory of a balanced number of frees. Just be consistent and pay them wherever they are.

Yes there are issues around the crowd influencing decisions in WA and maybe SA.

Seems odd that the Tiger Army doesn't have the same effect at the MCG.

If only they could predict if your kid was going to be an umpire or not.
