Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

The umpire that paid the free to Hipwood should be stood down. Had clear line of sight and no excuse for getting it so wrong. I hope we have demanded as much behind closed doors.
I posted this after the game.

It is actually important that the AFL do something. They spend a lot of time going on about protecting the head and outlawing the sling tackle as they should.

That umpire had an absolute howler on this one, he has clear instructions in regard to what is allowable and what is not. What the AFL needs to do is say the head is to be protected and that umpire made a clear error as confirmed by the MRP and given the importance of the issue the umpire in question will be umpiring at a VFL level next weekend.
Imagine if a game is decided by something like that?

Just incompetence. Worse happens 20 times a game every game and no penalty, and usually 3 or 4 that are clearly a 50 if the rule was enforced correctly and consistently, meaning a player is actually impeded, even shoved to the ground, by an opponent who arrives late to the contest, but the umps don't pay it. Its is actually an area I believe should be tightened-up, and it wouldn't be hard, but this is totally ridiculous, tightened-up or not.

Has an advantage call ever been made after a 50m penalty? It was actually a disadvantage.

Seems we're always on the end of these new umpire "interpretations"

- The common sense call against Sydney
- The deliberate behind call when there was an opponent with 9 metres
- The insufficient intent when broad ran out of room on the boundary
- The ARC over the goal post coz Lynch didn't celebrate.
- The multiple 50m penalties for Carlton for moving on the mark.

No doubt the AFL and the umps see us as an easy target.

I'm sure they do. We've taken it for years, now we're on our knees, we have no choice to keep sucking it up. It's such a rigged game. I can't see any way out of it.

Yeah, it's the umpiring grey areas that make the game great!

Excellent point.

There should be absolutely nothing about the umpiring which makes the game either great or terrible. The comment by the AFL mouthpiece is indicative that they have lost the plot - the umpiring should be as invisible as possible, it should contribute nothing positive or negative to the game.

The problem is that the umpiring is having way too much influence on how the game is played. It needs to end.

Nobody barracks for the umpires, although the AFL seems to want us to do so. At the game against Footscray there was some palaver about umpiring with some junior umps coming out with the game-day incompetents. What were they aiming for? Support for the umpires? Do they want a cheer squad next? Maybe they could raise a chant when umpires have influence or when their actions lead to a goal - they would be chanting all day.

What a mess.

The game is about the players and the teams, the AFL have lost the plot. They will lose the supporters unless they realise that without the clubs the game is dead.

There was also 1 much later in the game. Lion takes a mark, momentum takes him over the mark, he stops, looks up, sees someone moving and delivers it to them. From my understand having stopped, he should have been forced to go back over his mark, not continue to play on

That was a funny game against Freo. Ump[ire appreciation week, they were so bad, I'd not seen that many people wait until the end purely to boo those pricks off the field. You want umpire appreciation week? Maybe get them to do something we appreciate more than just show up, like impose the rules consistently, crazy talk I know,

Definitely crazy talk, you should know better.

Makes you wonder why is there only appreciation for these flogs?? Just shows how ego headed they are to have this.

I really hope McBurney can fix these many problems up by next season. I'm sick of these becoming weekly issues through a whole season.

When the public is behaving that way, the AFL should be able to read the room and react accordingly.

Didn't you know harry, the tigers are trailblazers (guinea pigs perhaps a more apt description?), snake identified this a few years ago. If you wanna see an umpire come up with someone new just watch a tigers game. I am yet to hear the AFL explain any of it but why would they bother? No one really cares (other than the PRE faithful) and if anything other supporters are a little glad we cop it week after week. My mates tell me I should be happy we won the 3 flags.

I am happy and satisfied in a way, I just feel for the players. There is little doubt they are carrying a lot of resentment/anger over their treatment, it's not like it is isolated or recent. It's been years. There is no doubt it is affecting them. I just wish the club would publicly support the players more.

Pretty sure they normally bring the ball back and say they can't pay advantage when a 50 is given.
Yeh, reckon I have heard that explanation before. A similar incident occured in the Melb game, there was a downfield free, Melb played on and kicked a point but the umpire brought it back to where the downfield free would have been. No advantage allowed (much to the chagrin of the Eagles fans).

And often, a 50 results in a set shot on goal so understand why no advantage would be paid.

Relax folks, it's one of Laura's 'grey areas'.
“Grey areas” is the AFL code for incompetence and cheating

Went up to the country to visit a mate on the weekend. Had the opportunity to see a country grass roots game for the first time. Saw the reserves and seniors. While the skills of the players weren’t AFL standard obviously, it was actually great watching it. The umpiring was above AFL standard. Yes, mistakes happened. But no “ look at me “ moments from any umpires. No prancing around waiting to bounce the ball. No theatrics from them. Was like watching the game from the 80’s. Umpire blew the whistle for frees then allowed the game to flow.
Maybe the senior AFL umpires should take a leaf out of their books. Get them to do a spell in the country leagues for a few weeks so they can get back in touch with the game. Better yet, get all the umpires advisors and AFL decision makers go too

As an aside Harrison Jones from Essendon suspended for a week for a dangerous tackle, also not penalised by the umpire at the time.

This isn't getting better anytime soon, was at corporate function Friday Arvo, and had the pleasure of the GM of footy speak dribble. Said she loved the grey in the game when it comes to umpiring decisions, the crows CEO had to pipe up and say no one wants grey, they want consistency. With someone like her in charge of the game ain't nothing going to change anytime soon.

The biggest grey area is between Laura Kane's ears. Fancy giving an answer like that. With clowns like her in charge the game's in a bit of strife.

What qualifications did Kane actually have that made them appoint her to the role?
