Troy Simmonds to Retire

Respect Simmo.

The trouble with our game is we remember the last things a player did not the great things.

Good luck for the future.

Hope to see you at the games riding the Tigers to their next premiership then we are all gonna have the biggest Party Australia has ever seen.

:clap

Hardwick also bears some responsibility for the decision to keep Simmonds but I do not believe for a second that Cameron had nothing to do with it.

Instead coach Damian Hardwick and the list management committee have offered him a one-year deal.

It was patently obvious to those watching Simmonds last year that he was finished. Astounded at the time he was retained and nothing has swayed that thought.
Spot on Tooheys

Well done Simmo.

Thanks for your efforts over the years.
Some really decent service, and unlucky to be hit by injuries.
Also, congratulations on a very unselfish decision!

All the best for your future endeavours.

Sorry, whilst others here get a bit meloncholy because Troy is retiring I have to say that he was yet another who had underperformed with us. The guy never reached his potential and should have been such a better player than he was.

I understand injuries played their part but the guy never took games by the scruff of the neck like a quality ruck does. He dropped too many easy marks, never took enough contested marks, missed too many easy shots at goal and turned the ball over too much with unforced errors.

He was "lucky" being a ruck with what appeared to be the necessary skills and 3 clubs kept him for a total of 12 seasons, generally hoping that he'd become the player he looked he could be. Yes he played nearly 200 AFL and that's great but there's more to it than the number of games.

Just my opinion.

Dunno about that. When he was injury free he was almost AA. Played a great year.

Going into the next year he was just about our most important player for success IMO - he got injured went a long way to contributing to our bad next year.

Simmo was brilliant sadly only for that 1 year.

He's the list manager isn't he?

Of course he is and of course he has to take some (most?) of the responsibility but your statement in the other tread was

Thanks for trying but your body let you down.

No wonder Cameron won't comment. His decision to keep Simmo on has been shown up as a mistake.

And you went on to state

Mostly his fault.
I wont blame a new coach coming in. This was largely Cameron's call.

The blame sits across them both.

Fine. The decision was both of theirs. ::)
Still wrong.

Well Done Troy. You have been a great servant for this footy club. Good luck for the future, you will be missed.

Congrats Simmo on a solid Tiger career

Will never forget the day we finally won a trade deal offloading Fiora for Simmo

In HINDSIGHT it wasn't a great decision, but put yourself in Dimma's shoes and you could understand why he wanted Simmo to stay for 1 more year.

It's not like he gave up much to keep him, not like giving up pick 19 for Jordan McMahon.

IMO this isn't a cross on Hardwick.

No hindsight at all. Most here were suprised he was kept on. We arent even at the club and could tell he would struggle to play out the year.

If we needed insurance there were other options.

Well done on a solid career.

As for those suggesting he underperformed.... your memories mustn't stretch too far back, he was almost an All-Australian 3 or 4 years ago & got a gig in the Big V. Couldn't have been too bad at some stage. He also had a very serious medical setback which would have retired many a person.

All the best in retirement Simmo.

2.5 bad decisions by dimma (committee).
simmo 1 year contract was absolutely ridiculous
mcmuffin, even more ridiculous
polak upgrade. upgraded him before rd 1 and played him 7 rounds later?? not really good, dropped and then brought back in????

How the hell were we going to get rid of McMuffin? You know he was contracted. Do you also realise that if we sacked him and paid him out his salary would have gone against the 2009 salary cap?

IMO you're wrong on all counts.

Exactly, but why let the facts get in the way of a good rant. Also the playing group would have lost faith in the club by sacking a player mid contract.

Sanchez was still contracted for the 3rd year of his initial deal, not our decision to make as no one wanted him at trade time
Simmo was kept as insurance in our weak ruck division. Perhaps we could have kept Pattison but we had 14 changes anyway, not the end of the world
We had to decide on our rookie elevations to replace our veterans prior to Round 1, we upgraded both our mature rookies as there was no other stand outs. Gourdis was perhaps unlucky but he was hardly knocking the door down for a spot either.

Nothing wrong by airing opinions.

Keep the bastards honest!
