Trent Cotchin (Merged)

Covid lockdowns probably put many relationships under pressure & convid hublife was such a unique change up of environment.
It's sad Dimma's relationship didn't survive it but that's life & divorces happen. I don't blame him for that.
No doubt it changed the dynamic though. Relationship breakdowns often affect those around them. Just glad it didn't happen before us winning three flags.
Good post, I agree.

I'm happy to give people pass outs during COVID, it was such a *smiled* up time in our life. Affected different people in different ways.

Also, we don't know what was going on with Dimma and Danielle, nor should we know. It's their business.

Anyway, a new Tiger era is about to commence....time to look forward, not back. Go Tiges!

Finished Cotch book and of course loved it but I just would’ve appreciated a bit more depth on topics he touched. For eg I’ve already mentioned him and Lids and how they both probably wouldn’t be at Richmond after 2016 but another is how he mentioned he felt Gil (and the AFL fraternity ) didnt like or want Richmond winning the 2020 flag. I wish he’d gone into some detail why. He mentions how he’s good mates with Hamish (Gils brother) so I’m sure if it’s true Gil didn’t want/like Richmond winning he’d really know.

He mentions some players went “off” Higgins and CJ after kebabgate. We obviously know “why” but “how”? Did it get repaired?

How his relationship with Dimma wasn’t the same after Dimmas marriage split. We know “why” but “how”?

He mentions how with he and his family in the Gold Coast hub in 2020 that he and Brooke nearly broke up and she was thinking of harming herself. Yes he said that the one bedroom apartment with a foul smelling air con wasn’t what was expected and of course the fall out from her getting a pedicure but I’d assume there was more to it than that.

He doesn’t have to be salacious but if you’re going to write your one and only autobiography and touch on topics then a bit more depth would be good.

Anyway, on to Jacks book now.

Cotch Dimma and their wives had a close relationship. Dimma leaving his wife, affects the Cotchin couple. TBH, 2021 presented a new rule that we didn't adapt to and soft cap cuts & COVID fines meant assistant coaches were lost too.

Melbourne 2021 was in and out of lockdown.

I saw win vs Brizzy at Metricon and win over the Giants in Melbourne. Athletes switch off distractions once a game starts

We played mixed footy but were out of the 8 on % late in the year. Martin getting serious injury was unprecedented.

I find AFL player autobiographies boring, they can't really tell all. Good on you for the book review. I liked Conrad's books.

Kebabgate? no mention of Stack . Nor Strike 1 Brookes nail salon pic?

Yes, sports players autobiographies are usually boring (except for Richmond ones of course…..) and I used to read them all but got sick of them.

”We grew up in (insert suburb here) and it was great, footy in winter and cricket in summer. Geez I used to have some battles with my brother in the backyard. Dad used to work and mum stayed home. We didn’t have a lot but we never went without. “

And then a progression from their junior days to the elite level and a season by season breakdown of their career.

I have a read a lot of them and not too many of them twice.

I have read Eddie Betts’ book which I found very interesting in parts. His story of racism and disadvantage and his journey to standing up against it and becoming who is today was great. When he first went to Carlton he didn’t follow team rules because he couldn’t read well enough to understand what was on the white board!

I’ve read both, and I read them in the reverse to you. First Jack, then Trent. It was interesting to see the 2 perspectives on the same era. I preferred Jack’s from an entertainment point of view. He’s genuinely hacked off at the AFL. I used to think he’d go into coaching, but his thoughts going into retirement seem to hint that he’s had enough of the demands that the game put on a full time professional and how that affects his family.

The both get a mention. Kebabgate not so much. The players didn’t know a lot about it until well after the fact, and from the way both Jack and Trent discuss it, they were kept fairly well out if it. The spa does get a good going over, because of how close Trent was to it, and how it affected Brooke. I think he came very close to pulling the pin following it. He’s very devoted to Brooke and protective of her.

Hub rules.. in a rugby state Gil did well to have the comp run at all.

the backlash against the Qld Govt for allowing fringe sport AFL to exist up here. Qld border was shut as was access to hospitals and it caused a death or 2.

The lack of clarity over COVID fines was a point of tension, Who pays? Dimma deservedly being on the big bucks but the club ended up us losing an assistant or 2.

We have not been great since 2020. Dimma did the right thing standing down. I've never seen a coach depart of their own accord.

Would sure like to get my hands on these two books again - The Royce Hart Story, 1970 and Captain Blood, as told to Brian Hansen, 1965 :notworthy:

Read them around 1980, they were in the Croydon High School library :D

I have the Jack dyer book signed by the great man. I got it as a small boy and my Dad asked him to sign it and make it me.

I read it maybe 5 years ago and the overwhelming feeling was that the times have certainly changed !!!

I had the book but I have a bad tendency to give my books away after I’ve read them. Either to someone I know or an op shop. Then regret it.

Ohhhh man that's the best thing I've read for a long time :eyes A signed book with Jack Dyer's signature 💛🖤 That's worth more than gold :giggle:

I remember seeing Jack coming out of the MCG a few times during his radio days on 3KZ" with 'The Captain and the Major' radio call of the game. Got his signature a couple of times that way

"Mark Lee's long arms reaching up like giant testicles." :ROFLMAO:

He was unique Jack. To my Dad, other members of my family and supporters of his era Jack Dyer was Richmond.

I have a couple of favourite Dyerisms

The one where he said something like he didn't go to the cinema until the 1970s because it was in black and white. The other one was where he said he did the longest kick ever at Glenferrie Oval when he kicked the ball out of bounds and it landed on the 3.25 to Belgrave (or something like that)

I think you can get the book from time to time on e-bay. I remember someone telling me they bought it, but I think they paid a few hundred $ for it

I had it given to me many, many years ago. I loaned it to someone & never got it back. A few years later I found a copy in an op shop, so I bought it. It cost me the grand sum of 75 cents. I read it again a few years ago & it certainly brought back a lot of memories.

I won't be parting with it. My 3 kids can sort out who gets it when I hop the twig. :))

Wow. I found the Jack Dyer book and Wild Men of Football by Jack Dyer at a big trash and treasure joint down at Geelong only a couple of years ago.
$10 each

And when he said he went up so high for a mark, the whistle blew for 3/4 time and they had to throw his orange up to him. Then, of course, when he had the shot for goal one day, on such an acute angle, the ball got caught between the goal posts.

Just Quality………

Jack reckoned one day he kicked the ball so hard during a game that it split, the leather casing went through the goals, and the bladder went through the point posts, he reckoned the team was awarded seven points instead of six.
