Would sure like to get my hands on these two books again - The Royce Hart Story, 1970 and Captain Blood, as told to Brian Hansen, 1965 :notworthy:

Read them around 1980, they were in the Croydon High School library :D

I read the Dyer one a few years back. Things have certainly changed. The Hart one I borrowed from the school library in high school. I enjoyed it at the time, but forgotten most of it by now.

I read one by Mopsy Fraser many years ago. Can’t remember what it was called and haven’t seen it anywhere since, but it was great. First chapter starts with him talking about a game at Vic Park where he reckons he cleaned up all three Twomey brothers in the first quarter. The joy that leaps from the page in the way he recounts it is truly heart warming.

I think gets a mention in Dyer’s book, too. They were wild days then.

Jack reckoned one day he kicked the ball so hard during a game that it split, the leather casing went through the goals, and the bladder went through the point posts, he reckoned the team was awarded seven points instead of six.

Yeah that's right, he kicked the ball just before the bell went (a bell was rung in those days) we were behind by 6 points & we won the game by a point.

What an absolute classic. So much funny bs was spun in those days.

I was lucky enough to pick up a copy Of Richo's book a few weeks back from an Op shop for $4. Another very enjoyable read.

I haven't been lucky enough to get hold of Royce's book (or even read it). But I'll keep my eyes open for it.

Royce's book has himself at Centre Half Forward, I'm not sure now if it was for the all-time team or the current players in the game at 1970.

And he did the book after just 4 years in the league lol

Yes, sports players autobiographies are usually boring (except for Richmond ones of course…..) and I used to read them all but got sick of them.

”We grew up in (insert suburb here) and it was great, footy in winter and cricket in summer. Geez I used to have some battles with my brother in the backyard. Dad used to work and mum stayed home. We didn’t have a lot but we never went without. “

And then a progression from their junior days to the elite level and a season by season breakdown of their career.
So true. And I still read them all. Can’t get enough of them. What a sucker.

it was commented on at the time when it came out but Neil Balme’s book is a good read
The best footy book for a long time, Balme tries to understand why he was who he was. Not following the formula.

If you want a great Richmond read, try this. Tells you why we are who we are.

Brilliance and Brutality: Carlton, Richmond and the Grand Finals of 1969, 1972 & 1973 By Dan Eddy.

Yeah I can't find a Mopsy book unfortunately but other books they've got chapters on him like 'The Wild Men of Football' and 'The Tigers Of Old'.

I have actually bought books from AbeBooks before, so I might have to invest in a copy, ohhhh they're actually at bookstores in Vic, Camberwell Books & Collect :giggle:

Or the other book written by Dan Eddy 'Ruthless Richmond' - our Roar store had them on sale a few months ago and I got a copy 🤔

I recently read that, too, Scoop. Fantastic. I saw this, but I was a kid, so didn’t understand a lot of it at the time. I always thought that Balme was our wild man, but Ricky McLean - wow!

That’s actually explained a bit in Brilliance & Brutality. He was asked to name HIS all time team, and he thought if it was HIS team, then he’d need to be in it.

Ruthless Richmond & Brilliance & Brutality is actually the same book. But with a different cover. My eldest daughter had it signed by Balmey & gave it to me. I told my Blues supporting mate about it & said I'd lend it to him. One of his daughters gave Brilliance & Brutality to him before I'd finished reading my book.

We both agreed that it's one of the best sports books we've ever read.

It gives a great insight into both clubs & also a little bit into the VFL at the time.

Thoroughly recommend it.

Ah, that’s good to know. I just posted that I can’t find Ruthless Richmond anywhere (but can find Brilliance and Brutality on Amazon.

It does. Funny thing is that when I first read it, I thought it was Dyer writing about himself.

So I went and dusted off my copy of Dyer's book, and I now realise it was actually Mopsy.

It sure wasn't all that clear in Dyer's book who had done the deed, but it makes sense now.

I actually thought Jack was being a bit big-headed recounting such a story about himself. Sorry Great Man.

From memory I think Mopsy took out one of the Twomeys, Jack got one and they got the last one between them. Not sure if that was the day the supporters wouldn’t let Jack and Mopsy out of the rooms. They got a police escort and the supporters surrounded the car, banging on the roof and even lifting the wheels off the ground. In the middle of this when Jack thought they were going to die, Mopsy started to laugh and when Dyer asked him why he said ‘It’s your car, Jack!’

He was asked to name a team he’d most like to play with, hence he was at CHF.

After just 4 years in the league he was already a deadset champion with 2 flags.
He played for Victoria in something like his 5th game. And kicked 7 goals…
