Trent Cotchin (Merged)

Personally wouldnt put lids anywhere near Trent as a player also.
Lids was your cream on top player if the team was going well.
Cotchin was the "man" when the team needed him in any situation.
Lids would have been an all Australian if he played in the cats team from 07-11, just left alone, no tag to do his own thing. When he played with us he was nearly always tagged or under pressure.

it can be the way the stars aligned for different individuals
I remember an interview of Lids by Richo
Lids talked fairly openly about the club and leaving
and I think the sentiment was the place wasn't professional enough and for 2016 that was probably very true
and a comment that did stick "Dusty was being Dusty" during that year

you can tick all the leadership theory boxes but will people follow you ?
you can have an impressive playing CV but will people follow you ?
you can do charity and community work away from the game but will people follow you ?

Lids was a great player for us and without out him we(the Tigers) would have been a very hard watch during that period

Clearly after he left Cotch and Dusty stepped up

Much has been said about Cotch and his leadership , but in a prelim final 3/4 qtr time
Dusty was moving thru the huddle and making eye contact with each player individually
and there was a nod or a tap on the arm and I reckon he did it to most of the group

if Dusty came to you , made eye contact and a little nod of the head as if to say You with me , we've got this ...
in a special moment
I know I'd follow, I'd walk bare foot over hot coals , hell yeah

Cotch , "that" tackle to start a 3rd qtr V Geelong , so damn inspiring

Those sort of opportunities to lead by example didn't seem to happen for Lids
High quality player - tick
from his onfield behaviour - a decent bloke - tick
well prepared and a very professional approach to the game - tick
he just didn't get block buster home and away games and finals
to give him those leadership opportunities

Trent & Dusty did and in their own ways they inspired a team

I don’t think we should underrate Lids as a player. There was a period post Richo before the emergence of Cotch and Dusty where he was clearly our best player. Lids had terrific speed, great delivery and his marking was very underrated imo. Great player.

I remember when there was a very telling stat about our success rate as a team with and without Lids.

Cant speak for others however i am not, he was our best player during a difficult period and was a fine player.

Lids was a great player, no doubt.
Was always a bit too ego centric IMHO.
I remember he was once asked why he didn't have tatts like a lot of the other boys.
The response:
"You don't put stickers on a Lamborghini!"
Enough said.
Lids and The Great Cotchinator.
Chalk and Cheese.
Just ask Dylan Shiel.

There's only one problem with Deledio. He never became a great player. Not a real good player. A great player. He shouldve. Had more than enough tools.

Lids was an excellent outside player. Not someone who could drag a team over the line though.
Still he probably could have been a Premiership player at the right club at the right time in his career prime.
As usual at Richmond during the dark age it was a case of too much left to too few when he was at his best.
Then injuries..

I have posted on this before, but Lids as a captain would have been a disaster.

Great player, definitely!

Leader, nope!

I spent a bit of time around him off the field, andi don't know how Katie takes the way he talks to her sometimes in front of others. Lids is about self unfortunately, and had he stayed in 2017, one would have to question whether he would have been best 22 anyway, so it probably saved us from making an impossibly hard decision. He was struggling with the old man's injury, dodgy calves and was a risk for any side to take into a big game. Without injury, he'd have been best 22, but at the time he wasn't stringing 4 games together without disruption.

Have you ever seen someone start to chew gum they don't even have in their mouth as soon as they strap on a cartridge belt and pick up a shot gun? I have, and it's pretty funny!

You are probably mostly right but he did play some stellar games in tough circumstances.

The last round match against Sydney in 2014 is mostly remembered for Rance's heroics in the last quarter but we forget that Lids was massive that day, kicking 3 goals and was probably BOG. He played one game against hawthorn during that period where he dragged us over the line, again kicking clutch goals in a low scoring game.

I have never met him and have no comment on him as a person at all but I loved watching him play at his peak. I do also largely agree with what Tora said which is whilst he was a very good player he probably should have been better but we left a lot to him in those days.

Was it Lids that Cousins grabbed when coming out of the race and pushed to the front of the players when he was acting Captain?

I think the ego Chimp refers to often in the book is aimed fairly at Deledio.

we all have our DNA that shapes the sort of person we will grow into

but we also have our role models and anti role models that play a big part

For Lids early years Terry Wallace was in charge and while many will point the finger at him
I remember Wallace saying he felt we had a selfish culture and he wanted to break that down

I do think it can become a apart of any lower side , the better players are very well paid
and they distance themselves from the lesser lights the lower clubs churn thru trying to find success

I wonder how Lids career would have gone if he arrived in 2010/12 ?

Yze , Newman and Ziebel now have the challenge refresh the culture and trying to get out of the shadows of Hardwick , Balme , Cotchin, Edwards , Houli , Peggy ...

No small task BUT we aren't a basket case so that will help

My take on Lids is that he was the athlete player. Didn't have a football mind set. All the tools - speed skill marking - just didn't know where to place himself during a game. Give him some of Riewoldt's football brain and Lids would have been a super star

^^^^^^^ This! Was a very good player but not a game changer like Cotch or Dusty could be.

He averaged 22.2 disposal across 14 seasons including a career best of 27.5 in 2012 plus he had nine consecutive seasons averaging 20+ disposals per game. Deledio had no trouble finding the ball and when he did find it, he was better than most at knowing what to do with it.

Very difficult players to compare. Cotchin as "in and under" would be superior, but Deledio much better as a running player up and down the wing.
