Trent Cotchin (Merged)

Loved lids.
Yeah he is no Cotchin but was a star in his own right.
As pointed out, would be a perfect cream on top to a premiership team.
Wouldn't compare the two as they are both chalk and cheese.
Would have loved lids as a high half fwd in our dynasty.

Trent had another quip at Lids about how in 2017 Lids said it’ll be funny when the wheels fall off Richmond again.

Yeah putting that in a group chat message with Richmond players???

Total *smile* move. Every quip in the book about Cotch’s leadership feels like it’s Lids.

I have Cotch’s book but I haven’t read it yet but if all these quips about Lids are accurate it disappoints me a bit.
What’s the purpose of writing that sort of stuff in a book?

The group message names Lids, the rest is left to the readers imagination.

I went to Lids, you tell me what you think after reading.

There’s others I haven’t mentioned. There’s another thinly veiled one where Cotch says it was well known there was a few egos around the club. Then mentions Lids in the next sentence.

If Lids had’ve played for Tiger in 2017, we would not have had Prestia or Caddy. Would we still have won the premiership?
Also there was a lot of talk on here back in the day that there were cliques within the club that drove a wedge between some of the players and that the moment Lids left things improved. I have no first hand knowledge of this but have no doubt that in 2017 the players had the utmost respect for each other and this in part led to our winning ways.

After reading Cotch's book I don't think we could have developed the culture had he stayed.
Cotch only became his best self as a leader after Lids departed.

Lids was your cream on top player if the team was going well.
Cotchin was the "man" when the team needed him in any situation.
Lids would have been an all Australian if he played in the cats team from 07-11, just left alone, no tag to do his own thing. When he played with us he was nearly always tagged or under pressure.
Yes they tagged Lids bc they all saw that if you stop Lids you stop Richmond to a great extent. Even one of our coaches said in an interview that "we are a better team with the ball in Lids' hands". Yes, our results were better when he played well but one player does not make a great team which is why we could not beat Geelong during those years when Cameron Ling tagged him. As a footballer Ling had much less skill but he did his job as required and Lids was mentally shot when he played on him. I very much admired Lids but he suffered from the "outstanding junior syndrome" in which he was able to win games off his own personal efforts so he didn't need too many other players in the team to be great. Perhaps he didn't build leadership traits where he had to develop others within the game, with handball, etc.. He's still in fine nick too, saw him at a charity golf day recently.

I don’t think we should underrate Lids as a player. There was a period post Richo before the emergence of Cotch and Dusty where he was clearly our best player. Lids had terrific speed, great delivery and his marking was very underrated imo. Great player.

I remember when there was a very telling stat about our success rate as a team with and without Lids.
Underrated?!? Not by what I saw...Lids had hands like velco straps...spider(man) pads...chewing gum...bitumen melting in the hot sun...wet paint...sheet on a blanket...phlegm from a very bad flu...fly paper...just one grab!!! Possibly could have been an all time great pick pocket!

Trent was a champion without question. He was brilliant in our Grand Final wins, he played like the champion that he was.
Chimp's leadership in our 3 :cupgold:cupgold:cupgold was without peer, and places him above any multiple premiership captain IMO.

yes that's what I meant. He had great hands when marking the ball, as good as I have seen. In fact he had great hands, Lids was never a fumbler

A lot was written in forums after Dimma left Danielle, the impact it had on the team and how we weren't the same. Some said there was no difference and people were clutching at straws.

I personally thought something broke. Reading the book, Trent pretty much confirms this. He had a real issue with Dimma's relationship with a Richmond staffer. His personal relationship with Dimma was changed and so was his professional one as Captain to Coach.

Hardwick and the Richmond staffer are going on four years together now so it’s safe to say he didn’t blow up his marriage for a fling.

Maybe Dimma could have handled the situation better but maybe, just maybe others at the club could have too.

Ive always been under the impression the trust was gone the love and fun vanished.

It was right in front of us for all to see, the changes in body language, lack of carefree interactions even amongst the playing group.

Ive always been of that opinion since the club came back in 21, its never been the same.

Covid lockdowns probably put many relationships under pressure & convid hublife was such a unique change up of environment.
It's sad Dimma's relationship didn't survive it but that's life & divorces happen. I don't blame him for that.
No doubt it changed the dynamic though. Relationship breakdowns often affect those around them. Just glad it didn't happen before us winning three flags.
