He's a strange one our Trent. He could be any flavour in the world, yet he's still vanilla.
I honestly don't think I've seen such a talented, classy player be so plain.
I remember it well. That was the day you knocked over my beer.Where does Leysy start. So many memories as start typing this post.
Like many, remember watching his first game in for us. In the outer with @Redford in the wet against Geelong on a tough arvo at the G. As one we both knew he was a special talent then.
The cleanest player on the ground. And 305 games later, despite being a bit slower, you know what, he still is now.
Next is let's not overlook how quickly he rose to greatness as footballer. By age 21 he was a Jack Dyer medalist (that is like Sonsie winning it next year).
By 22 a Brownlow and dual Jack Dyer medalist. And here is a stat for you:
In 2012 into 2013 he polled coaches votes in 19 consecutive matches. Think about that for a bit. For near a whole season, win/lose/draw he was in the top 6 or so players in every single match. That will never be broke. Ever.
To put that in perspective. Tim Taranto has carried our midfield on his back all year in a similarly performing team and polled in 10 of 19 matches. The Chimp didn't miss one.
FWIW next on this list wayyyyy back on 13. And not bad players - Dangerfield, Fyfe and Pendlebury. But they weren't close to that string of performances by our Chimp.
Then came the hurt. Captaincy during years 13-16, when as we all know we got bundled straight out of the finals. Into the wind. Finals performances. Questions were asked. Big time on here.
By the back half off 2016 Leysy felt like he was Sargeant Elias in Platoon. Shot down from everywhere
If you look at todays posts you would assume it was smooth sailing all along. Go back to his thread in the back half of 2016. Most on here were eating him alive.
"Not made out for captaincy"
"Soft"
"Not demanding"
"Gets easy kicks"
"Had his go, time to move on"
Carnage.
The true believers of his fortitude and greatness stuck fat. Knew what he had in him. Not many.
Then the pivot. Went from a 30 touch, offensive (but always hard) mid to the biggest cannonball in the game.
But bigger than that, led our club to a change in off field mindset that we all know so well that Leysy doesn't need to repeat it - imperfection, no limits, say why not me? Why not us? And why not now?
"I'll hold onto the cup longer than Tex"
And didn't he deliver! Yes there is Benny, Dimma, Dusty, Peggy. Yes there were the bumps, blocks and tackles everyone has posted, But the great Chimper was the one that led the mindset change that gave us all the joy from 3, yes 3 premierships!!
Leysy well knows he has plenty wrong over the years on this forum (reminded occasionally ha) but remember saying early on he would be the biggest thing to walk in our doors in a generation (that seemed to unhinge a previous mod - Rosy).
Never been happier to get that one right over her.
Finally, on a mega long post (apologies) Growing up as a young Tiger Tragic in Northern Tasmania, Leysy had his idols, but they have been few and far between.
First from age 7 meeting Michael "Disco" Roach in the Burnie plaza and following every footstep (or goal) then to a lesser extent Flea, Knighter, and the next big one Richo. Never thought they could be beat.
But then, Chimp did it. His skill (left, right, hand, foot), touch, persona, hair, hardness, courage, leadership and care delivered this now middle-aged man more joy and (sometimes blind) adulation than anyone on a sporting field has ever given me.
Never to be surpassed for this (still young at heart) Tiger. Thanks for everything legend!!
Cotch and tackles.Line ball with the above and the message sent in the 19GF on Mumford. Both telling.People will mention their favourite Cotchin moment in coming days so I will get in early.
There are a lot but the one for me that typifies what he brought through the flag years was the tackle on Stanley that led to Prestia's pass to Lynch and the goal straight after halftime in the 2019 prelim. The crowd was still seething from Dangerfield's dive and the 50 metre penalty at the end of the first half. That tackle said to the players and the supporters that we weren't lying down.
I love that moment and have watched it over and over. It had leadership all over it
You think thats insulting. How has the AFL not pinned on the landing page of its website the announcement of his retirement? Three time captain of the contemporary dynasty!
I'd have Cotch @2.My time watching live
1. Richo - club would’ve folded without him
2. Dusty
3. Cotchy/Rance/Jack
4. Weightman/Knights
Exactly.Havent seen that for years best not to think about what might have happened today

His size ( junior ) made him the player he eventually became.I would of loved to watch him play U12's footy, reckon it would of been a classic. Kids getting hit left right and centre.
Thanks for the ride, Champ.
