Trent Cotchin (Merged)

Love Cotch, but his kicking for goal has been shizen.

Just knew he was going to miss that sitter against Port, even when he had time to straighten up.

The one flaw in his game IMO.

Just wait until next year when they bring in a 4th.
Trialing this again over the next couple of weeks. If they cut back to 16 players to ease congestion it won't be long before there's more maggots than players out on the field each game.
Think there won't be congestion then, all these crazy little *smile* in green running backwards screaming n flapping their arms while players are desperately ducking n weaving trying not to interfere with a maggot. FMD what a nightmare.

Yep no doubt mate.

The one rule that really sh!ts me too. It happens in every game and if the umps don't call them out on it they just keep going. Powell Pepper was standing next to Cotch at one stoppage, arms all over him, ump is standing next to them watching yet nothing is said, no free is paid. Do they even know what holding the man is for? Paying holding the man will free up congestion, initially from paying free kicks and opening the game up that way, but in time holding the man will disappear and the best players will win more clearances and the game will then also open up.

Its the simplest thing to change. Instead of having the umps so fixated on crap like players running 4.95m away from the man on the mark and then paying a 50, how about they get rid of this blight on the game of players constantly being held and free the game up that way. Seems ridiculous that no-one in the media has the balls to say it and actually come out and say the umpires are actually impacting the game negatively through lack of umpiring. Maybe if they weren't always trying to be mates with players like Chamberlain and actually focused purely on umpiring the game and not their own image then maybe, just maybe the game might open up a bit.

Holding the man has disappeared, they never pay it. It is a disgrace and such a simple solution to the congestion issue.

Totally agree . . . and it would help players like Cotchin too.

Two things need to happen when Chimp is being held all game.

1) Chimps needs to let the umpire know it's happening, calmly. Then every time he's being held he needs to shout and over exaggerate trying to make the person holding break free. Umps arten't silly. Chimp starts making a scene. the Umps will know the broadcasters will start focusing on what's going on so they'll react.

2) Chimp's teammates need to manhandle the chimphandlers

Seems reasonable, they hold Cotchin, we send a player to hold their player and we'll see who gets the free (hint: not us :( ).

Hardwick needs to say it clearly in his pressers each week. Complain loudly and bitterly until the media get the message.
That's the only way.
It's what the Scott brothers do and the Hawks coach.
Just do it repeatedly.

Exactly sometimes use the media to your advantage which we hardly do !

Who can forget that game against the Pies some what 3-4 years ago. Continually held off the ball, blocked and highlighted in the call but Cotch got NOTHING.

At least they will scare off the seagulls.

Yes, the lack of clear thinking is staggering.

The game is too congested. What can we do to fix it? Well, we could change the number of interchanges or we could introduce zones or we could give a free when the ball trickles out or we could reduce the number of players on the field or we could introduce many more new rules.

Here’s an idea. Stop players holding other players when they don’t have the ball.

Does anyone official even remember that we already have this rule?

When you've got 30 or more players around a stoppage, how are the umps meant to officiate? There would be a free at every ball in, or ball up. It would speed up the game if they were all called, but the public would go nuts.

That’s a great point.

I think these trends have occurred because umpires don’t actually enforce rules like “holding the man” or “deliberate out of bands”. In attempt to reduce interpretation variability between umpires, they are trained to spot cues. Free kicks are paid or not paid based on cues.

This means a player is allowed to deliberately take the call out of bounds as long as he doesn’t triggered one of the simplified cues. Or if it wasn’t a deliberate act but it triggers a cue, it’s a free kick.

I would love to see the current rules re-read with a fresh mind. Spectators might need to accept a little more subjectivity in the application of the rules.

the holding of Cotchin at stoppages has been an issue since round 1 2013, Collingwood would have McCaffer holding him all game. Curnow, etc. Hinkley has been tagging Cotchin nearly every game we have played against them, last year or the year before they had the bloke with pony tail holding him all game, in the final they had Cornes on him.
But the umpires aren't doing their job, pay one or two holding the man decisions, it will stop. But they don't.
It's frustrating watching that happen to Cotchin, but the very next game you watch a bloke in a centre bounce is pinged for holding before the ball is in the area.

When I played (many years ago now) if a guy kept holding on to me I'd "accidently" stand on his foot as I went to run off him. If he kept doing it I'd tell that he'd finish up with a broken foot. Most times they'd stop holding if they didn't they'd finish up with a very sore foot.

Another thing that I've seen was, an "accidental" whack to he stomach on take off. Although with the amount of scrutiny now this might be a bit difficult. But I suppose that at least it'd highlight how much a particular player was being held.

As many have said previously, if the umpires were doing their job properly these actions wouldn't be necessary.

Problem is Tottie that the *smile* wits in suits have been trying to reduce free kicks for the last thirty years to avoid stopping n restarting the game, they want it to flow continuously. Of course the unintended and unforseen consequence is that players are constantly holding n scragging players while the ball is rolling along the ground or buried somewhere in the middle of twenty blokes all holding n scragging one another.
Years ago one umpire would often be able to see and adjudicate 60-70-80 free kicks per game. Now there's three umpires n they're all playing Sgt *smile* n see nothing all game long.

If they paid the bloody frees that we can see from up in the grandstands, the game would open up big time. If they stopped prancing n waggling n directing traffic every time there was a stoppage n instantly restarted the game, the game would open up some more. If the interchange was lowered to maybe 40 during play plus extras during the breaks, players capacity to burst sprint to contests would be reduced n the mids would need to rest in the pockets during games n the game would open up again.

Any nuffer footy fan can see and follow these basics to reduce congestion, only the multi million dollar *smile* wits in suits need to hold conferences, appoint committees n hold secret trials to justify their existence.
