Was Cotchin in the ruck at one stage? Dear lord. Poor bloke

Contested against Westhoff 3 or 4 times in the last 6 minutes. Ridiculous from the coaching staff.

Ridiculous. Have to wonder where the game is going when you have the games best midfielders playing in the ruck.

Especially when your trailing by 13 points to go with 5 minutes to go.

One of the dumbest moves our coaching staff have done in a while. Why they wouldn’t have Moore in the ruck and Cotchin actually trying to win the ball. Just mind boggling decision really.

Only played 75% TOG. Less than all but 5 teammates. Tried hard without much support. In our best handful.

Thought he had minimal impact tonight.

And again with the goalkicking.

But posters last week said he didn't shoot because he was trying to give kids sine confidence
FT... He needs to get his own goal shooting confidence up before worrying about nuffers who may not be there at the pointy end of the season

Managed to even 3 of the 4 ruck contests he did.
I think he was our best ruck on the night.

:(

At that stage of the game we couldn't afford halfing the contest, we needed clear possession

And we were losing it outright with Nank

That centre combination yesterday reminded me of the dark days of the late 80's early 90's
We would've one even if we had Polly farmer.

It seemed that out midfielders were always starting the centre bounce behind their man. Cotchin was often 5-10 meters back from the contest.

Watching the replay again, Port defensive mids had a clear directive. That was to block or hold Cotch at every opportunity & prevent him from impacting the contest. They knew if they shut down the skipper they'd go well towards winning the game as our other mids are not at the same level.
Credit to Hinkley though he idenitfied the threat & shut it down. Umps of course did us no favours whilst he was manhandled all night.

This is where the umpires *smile* me.

He was held at every opportunity by Powell-Pepper. Not one holding free paid.
And they wonder why the state of the game is *smile* when the best players are not allowed to do what they do best.

Ssssshhhh! They're making up new rules as we speak to fix everything that is wrong with the game. Pity no one will bother teaching the maggots what the rules are or how to adjudicate them properly, so we'll have to go through all the game fixing by experts n overpaid corporate suits again in a couple of years time.
How else are the AFL going to justify their mountain of officials if they can't save the game every couple of years.

It’s insnane. The lack of proper officiating is ruining the game.

This is the only sport where the umpires fail to adequately protect the ball players.

The one rule that really *smile* me too. It happens in every game and if the umps don't call them out on it they just keep going. Powell Pepper was standing next to Cotch at one stoppage, arms all over him, ump is standing next to them watching yet nothing is said, no free is paid. Do they even know what holding the man is for? Paying holding the man will free up congestion, initially from paying free kicks and opening the game up that way, but in time holding the man will disappear and the best players will win more clearances and the game will then also open up.

Its the simplest thing to change. Instead of having the umps so fixated on crap like players running 4.95m away from the man on the mark and then paying a 50, how about they get rid of this blight on the game of players constantly being held and free the game up that way. Seems ridiculous that no-one in the media has the balls to say it and actually come out and say the umpires are actually impacting the game negatively through lack of umpiring. Maybe if they weren't always trying to be mates with players like Chamberlain and actually focused purely on umpiring the game and not their own image then maybe, just maybe the game might open up a bit.

x4. No need for new rules, just competently and consistently enforce the ones we have. Umpiring has gone downhill a long ways IMO. I think its a combo of AFL incompetence and reactiveness, can't maintain a consistent focus and philosophy. And also depth and the fact we now have 4 times the umps we used to. Used to be 6 games a week and one central ump, then 7 games and 2 umps, now 9 and 3 umps.

Just wait until next year when they bring in a 4th.
