Training For Redemption in 2022

Kick-In Tactics

Something I noticed in the game yesterday that also bothered me last season.

It seems our preference is too kick short to the pocket and then to a contest.

I just wish that from time to time that we'd take the 20m -25m on offer and kick long to the wing.

Anybody else got thoughts on this?
I’m thinking that this tactic is to keep the oppo defence up close with more space out the back toward our goal. If they think we are going to kick long all they do is fold back and crowd our half forward area. Makes it hard then to find space in our forward line hence poor scoring efficiency.

Daniel Rioli off HB was interesting.
Clearly the preferred player to go to from defensive setups. He went ok but missed a few targets he really should have hit which was a bit disappointing.
At this stage he's no certain Houli replacement (no easy feat) but I'll cut him some slack as it was the first hitout. Actually thought Ralphsmith looked more dynamic off the backline but need to see more.
I think these small defensive roles are still up for grabs between Rioli, Short, Mansell & Ralphsmith. The later two the more impressive in yesterday's scratch match.
Unfortunately Dan's namesake in MJ had very little influence yesterday.
Rioli has great closing speed and offers good run and carry, but yes it’s his balloon kicks that consistently miss targets that have me concerned about him at half back.
I see him as a short term transition option for a few years until Banks and Brown are ready.

Your being very generous. I had more influence watching it on tv

Reckon Hugo is the only young player that should be in the R1 team based on yesterdays performance.

Dion, Trent and Shane all looked in great nick. If the footy gods are kind and grant us significant game time from this group (as well as Dusty of course) then we will be going deep into Sep.

Lambo and Graham the concern thus far.

Agree - Hugo will be a regular best 22 pretty soon.

Also reckon Ross is marked too harshly here. (is it because he looks a bit like Joel Selwood?)
Ross had one clanger kick. But redeemed himself intercepting one. It was a training drill so a lot of good players. George & RCD were good too. Ditto Gibcus, Cumberland.
Tarrant, Grimes, Stack, Miller, Kmac & Pickett, Short didn't do a lot. But I can't see Hugo in a fit team. Back to 2 rucks I guess. Tarrant taking Astbury spot & Balta as 3rd KPF. Play him high to be a marking option.
Stack would want to up his output soon or Rioli, Mansell will keep out of the backline. Baker & George will keep him out of the fwd line

I do agree here, when they just run out they have more space than the guy in the pocket who takes the mark where someone can stand closer (stupid rule that is)

I wouldn't read too much into what we did yesterday DMC.

Very hard to practice kick ins in intraclubs because everyone from both sides knows the set-ups. The short kick is the bail out option for the kicker and the least protected area for the defenders so it makes sense you will get that a lot when the defensive players know where to shut down.

Watched some of the stream this morning and the coverage is good but the commentary is woeful. There are 100 callers in suburban footy that are trying to get a break who would give their left one for a shot and call the guts out of it.

Just another example of how our social media/fan engagement/membership branch is well off the pace.
It's ironic the best caller Ch7 has got is Jason Bennett but he doesn't get a gig seemingly because he wasn't a star player from yesteryear.

Also keep in mind with it being available on the internet we don't want 17 other Coaching groups picking the eyes out of our plans so we'd be keeping some things for another day.

Yeah. Predictably of the kick in on Saturday. No use of Shorty who can run 20 and kick 50. In which case, should short be in the back line at all?

For those marking Ross hard watch the game and look at what Ross is doing off the ball.

He is resting on the wing the switching into the centre and is covering the ground well, on a couple of occasions there was a contests in one fifty the ball is kicked across the ground and quickly into the other fifty. On both occasions Ross is in the original contest and you can see him running into the other fifty as the ball arrives on the other side.

RCD while doing some good work was no-where near as prominent.
