Training For 2023

Interesting comments from Dimma there about load management. I took a look at our fixtures, and they actually look ok to potentially rest players at different intervals.

Start the season off with as full a squad as we have (injury permitting), The Eagles game in Round 8 probably presents us an opportunity to rest a few (2 5 day breaks either side), then we have the bye in Round 15, then dependent on our results at that point, look to rest (see load manage) once or twice into the run into finals (hopefully we will be in a good position for finals).

So essentially, 1st 7 games, then a break, then 6 games, then a break, then we have the remaining 9 games where we might rest once or twice (we have a trip to Perth to play the Eagles in that time, so could be a perfect time)
Isn't this what we did in 2020?

Yep, we were in every game, can't remember a year that has happened before. Even in our premiership years, there were games that we were totally out of. To add to your stat, we were leading in the last quarter in every game except 2...the Crow and the Dees.
Hallelujah. So we urgently need composure and goal sense on the forward line. And we used to be so good in this area.

Now who have we got who could provide that?

I don't disagree with this but the other thing to add is the brain fade aspect

I am trying to remember the details but I think it was Aarts who played on in the North game very late in the game rather than taking a set shot from 30 metres. Someone did the same in the Suns game i think? Cumbo playing on in the Freo game after marking on the 50 and the siren sounding ( although I would place less blame on him than the others).

We had an amazing stat in 2022 that I am sure has never happened to a club before with so many losses in a year. We had the lead in the 2nd half of every game we played in 2022, all 23 of them !

Personally I see 2022 as a lost opportunity and 2023 as redemption

George should have kicked earlier, he could have handballed to Cumberland to his left or even balked Ballard if he had footy skills :censored:

Would have made it 23 points, not 18 and game over.

We were implementing Rioli Jnr, Sonsie and Cumberland into the forward line so I'll give them some slack up forward. Especially the Gold Coast, Nawf & Freo games all in a row were Cumbo's First to his 3rd game, Rioli playing his 11-13 games, Sonsie playing his First and 2nd games against Nawf and Freo.

Then after those 3 games, we closed out the season 4 wins in a row- Brisbane by 7, at Port by 38, Hawks by 61 and Essendumb by 66.

The defence needs way more work than the O, the 9th worst D in the league :poop:

The offence managed to score 104 against Brisbane but the defence gave up 106, that's not good enough in a finals game.
Our 104 was the 4th highest finals score from 18 finals scores - 133, 120, 106 and our 104 the only 100's in the finals.
(Average score in the finals for the losing team was 71. We concede that in every finals game, no one beats us!!)

You can't win a flag without a Top 4 D, that's where we need to get better. We need to improve at least 200-300 points in what we concede - 10-15 points a game.

I believe with the two new Rolls Royce's we have in the middle, that'll help with less ball going backwards and more ball going forward from the centre bounce :eyes

I agree our defence wasn’t what is has been but I believe part of the problem was our clearance work in the midfield. Too much easy ball coming in.
Someone will have the stats but I think when we won clearances we won the game, almost always anyway.

And defensive 50 stoppages, we just leak way too many goals. The Zurhaar one was just a complete disaster.

Training Today Monday :

Only a 90 minute session in the heat today which only makes me pretty sure that there will be some form of match sim? for the Open Training session 8:30am Saturday.

More an Injury/Managed Report today.

A couple pieces of good news today, Grimes did 100% of training and Prestia 80%.

Can't say Lynch & Graham did too much more than last session but did a little bit of ball work.

Sonsie in his 4th week still running no ball work.

Jacob Bauer was either in a moon boot or lower ankle brace.

Cumberland did nothing Monday and very little today.

Others in rehab:

Broad, (believe his is only precaution and not a concern?)
Castangna
Kaleb Smith
Soldo
Seth Campbell
Colina

Suppose I have to give you one highlight : MJ full pace hoover pick up of ball, turned on a step and acceleration away was electic, (he did spoil it by missing the target in the square though). He is having a good pre-season.

Oh, and Miller looking very confident, pretty sure he will be able to fill his role.

Cheers @caesar always appreciated.

That's what I put in my last line

14th for Clearances - Nawf, Carltoon, Poor-t, Suns, even Adelaide all had more Clearances. Only Saints, WCE, Essendumb and Hawks had less.

The biggest problem all year was the midfield. In that Brisbane final game Neal had 15 clearances. Hopper and Taranto are an instant fix to that. No more easy ball out of the center.

We had 17 marks inside 50 and kicked 16 goals
Brisbane had only 8 marks inside 50 but still managed to kick 16 goals as well

Our defenders were not allowing the easy mark but we were being outplayed on the loose ball. How does Daniher kick 3 goals with only 1 mark and none in their F50? Cameron and Hipwood also kicked 3 goals each but only had 1 mark inside their F50 each

It wasn't due to free kicks given away in the backline. We were pretty decent that day - except in the forward line

Looking forward to seeing how Hopper and Taranto improve our midfield performance this year

Definitely agree with all that man :eyes

Normally the GF's and Finals you'd see our biggest ball winners would be Dusty, Prestia, Edwards, Cotchin, Houli and Short.
The Brisbane final it was Nank - the ruckman!!
Edwards had 6 (and now gone), Prestia 12, Cotchin 14, Dusty 15, Short 20, Houli retired.

That's where Taranto and Hopper should improve that midfield and restore some sanity to the top of our disposals list.
We needed to win just that one more midfield ball in that game and we go on into week two of finals man :eyes

We are training waaaay! more around the ground stoppage work than centre clearane which I think will take care of itself with the new additions.

Good to hear. It was the around the ground clearances that we sucked at last year.

Oh, and Miller looking very confident, pretty sure he will be able to fill his role.
i hope we go with Miller, that article you shared this morning said
"Richmond appears set to continue with a two-ruck approach this year, enabling either Toby Nankervis or Ivan Soldo to drift forward, while there are also high hopes for 206cm youngster Samson Ryan as another attacking option.

Ben Miller, as well as last season's mid-season recruit Jacob Bauer, are other candidates to step up throughout the season to aid both Riewoldt and Lynch, as well as the club's impressive fleet of small forwards."

God, can we please not go with the two rucks? Maybe against the likes of Gawn and Grundy, but majority of sides dont have two genuine ruckmen. IT JUST DOES NOT WORK FOR US. When they both played at the end 2019, we got away with it because it was only a few weeks at the end of the year and they both played 60% game time or less each week. Not sustainable.

I had a laugh at that writer's/scout's observations, it is obvious what we have been training and it ain't two rucks.

thats good, we were actually a decent centre bounce team last year, 5th for centre clearance differential.

we have been 18th for 6 years straight in stoppage clearance differential though. havent had the big bodies around the ground to go with the other midfields. hopefully taranto and hopper fix this for us
