Training For 2023

Understood that but imo Young would have to be the first choice replacement for him.
Oh definitely, I had Young in the 22 already. But I can see why we didn’t play him this week. Balta on Hawkins and I’d have Broad take Cameron and follow him all over the ground, otherwise we’ll lose him in transition. Apart from those two they’re a smallish forward line so makes sense for Young not to play this week

Dreamtime Captain's Run :

Not usually worth reporting from the Captain's Run but today I marvelled at a goal shoot out between Samson and Graham who continued their goal kicking for 15 minutes longer than anyone else.
The marvel component was they must have had 30 shots, I think Graham only missed one and Samson about three.
What I want to know is where was our sports scientist to ban them from having too many shots ;) , maybe more of our players should try it.

Great to hear. Maybe every player could benefit from repetition practice!! It works in most other sports.

Exciting. West Coast won a flag from accurate goal kicking. Kennedy unbelievable and we know what happenned on GF day in 2018.

North lost one against the Crows by stuffing it up and Essendon blew a prelim for the same. As much as we are FARCED off, Lynch should have just kicked it last year.

Such a critical skill.

The following is from an article on the club website about Xavier Clarke which may explain some improvement in goal accuracy last game.

Is there a simple answer to why the season has been plagued with inaccuracy in front of goal?

He says there are positive plans afoot to address the issue, such as a recent goal kicking competition started by Kane Lambert only a few weeks ago. Every player is matched up against another player, and throughout the week, pair by pair, they’ll play off against one another in a kick off. Ten set shots each on goal, the most goals wins. If they’re tied after 10, a sudden death shootout determines the winner, who goes through to the next round - like March Madness for sharpshooters.
“At the end we’ll have the best goalkicker at the club. And the losers progress into the challenge cup, too, so you can actually be the best worst goalkicker at the club,” Clarke says. “A forward really doesn’t want to lose against a backman. A midfielder really doesn’t want to lose to a ruck. It adds this layer of competition and pressure, but also fun.”

People stand on the sideline watching and cheering (or jeering). Kamdyn McIntosh will pretend he’s on his phone answering a call - anything to distract. The hardest fought win happened only a few days ago. Josh Gibcus was up against Sam Banks after training, and both slotted 8 goals from their first 10 shots. Then they each kicked 7 more goals straight, until one of them finally missed. “It was Gibcus - I wasn’t expecting that,” says Clarke. “It was quite funny watching that one unfold. They were the last two out there, with only the coaches watching. You could just see the pressure build.”

Something I've been doing while coaching kids basketball for over 20 years...

Maybe that’s when Josh done his hammy haha

A midfielder really doesn’t want to lose to a ruck

No shame if you lost goal-kicking to Samson but Graham prevailed just, absolutely he is one of our best shots on goal, this was just an un-official shootout but neither wanted to lose.

two good things out of that
1) they are working on goal kicking
2) they are putting a bit of fun into it

Probably that competition that Kane Lambert initiated.

my experience with low grade footy and juniors
was when someone would combine fitness , a skill or both with a fun element

that team would invariably head in the right direction

and the fact they could do something like the goal kicking exercise despite their ladder position is a good sign

Exactly. Making it fun is the key.

Hopefully that translates on field by being relaxed & calm.
