Bit early to say that. Last year Lambert played from the rookie draft, Drummond (did his knee unfortunately) from the National Draft #52, both played in 2015. If we can be as smart as last year adding 1 or 2 from those drafts still to come, Yarran and potentially Townsend, a good #12 pick, and a full season from a C Ellis, there's plenty to be excited about for 2016. Looking forward to it, time to step up in the finals though this time around.
Could also find another McIntosh. Plus I think he can go up a gear or two as well.

B for me. We re-signed Lennon despite persistent rumours that Carlton were heavily into him and for him to go PSD so we lose him for nothing. Then there was a bit of talk that Astbury would be going North to Brisbane but he stayed. We gained Townsend who is speculative but so would be a kid we took with that pick hopefully we managed to snare a gem that just didn't get a chance with all the other talent at GWS. We got Yarran who fills a need.

We tried to get a couple of others but they didn't want to come.

yeah you might be right. Though seem to recall Lambert dashing for the ball clearly out in front of some big north bloke in that elimination final and he was run down in no time. It was pretty sickening to watch his little legs going like hell but getting nowhere. Way way too slow. At this stage we don't know who pick number 12 will be but if we see him playing in the firsts next year it will be a miracle. McIntosh can't kick to AFL level so wouldn't expect too much from him - he and Conca really need a summer of serious kick passing practice.

Guess if Ellis and Lennon and big Mc were allowed to develop in the firsts all year through and throw in Yarran that would be worth watching. :)

Voted 'D' but after reading have decided it was close to a 'C' mainly because of our 'didn'ts'

Didn't lose our 1st pick
Didn't lose a player of real value to a trade
Didn't lose an unsigned player - yet.
Didn't give in to Carlton (though we paid overs for Pick 19)

Yarran's attitude will be interesting to watch - I expect him to be better in 2017 than 2016.
We have an unknown quantity in Townsend, could he be slightly advanced Arnot.

Agree with you TOT70

The best way to get A grade talent in is to go to the draft for it. Dangerfield was a free agent who wanted to go home so he literally landed in Geelong's lap. He still cost them two first rounders. As did Treloar. The Druggies managed to squeeze pick 5 and a decent player for Carlisle and he has already distinguished himself as the dumbest player going around.

The new rules freed to player market up a bit but also had an inflationary effect. At the end of the day, any club that uses a sub 20 pick wisely should get an A grader with it.

Still the best way.

We still have a few holes, well mentioned in this thread - but the type of player to make the biggest impact on our move ahead is a goal kicking player - we so desperately need another goal kicker. I hope Yarran is given this chance. Milera looks the likely drop at 12, but I would love us t be courageous and take Daniel Rioli. Not for 2016 necessarily, but for beyond! Taking Townsend might be the cue that says we'll take a goal kicking potential kid.

Obviously not the quickest player but maybe he had just busted is gut beforehand. For me Lambert was one of the standouts in terms of improvement from where he came from in 2015. Can't really remember him getting caught too often and overall, particular in later matches, played within his abilities and made great disposal decisions.

Sorry why would it be a miracle? Ellis was 12 last year and Lennon was 12 the year before and both played 1sts in their 1st year.

Yeah well you might be right. Though I expect it will be difficult for our new no. 12 to break in. Our list is apparently settled. Anyway, he’ll probably need to work on his defensive game, build up his tank, learn the Richmond way etc etc until all imagination and risk taking is totally removed from his game .....then he'll be ready.

Clearly they really taught Jack and Rance the Richmond way.

rating a trade period is like rating a draft. cant really be done for 5-7 years.

Or forecasting the weather.......... amazing how many people read, participate and enjoy discussing it though - and doesn't mean we shouldn't do it!

and we didn't lose anyone.
Probably the most important point of all.
We've got a fairly decent n consistent side, we didn't lose anyone of value at all n we've still got a decent core of youngsters who are either under developed or at the tipping point of becoming quality players for us.
B.Ellis, Griff, Vlossy, Assa, Concareter, Grub etc. still have some improvement in them. Kids like Beanie, C.Ellis, KMac, Lennon, Menadue etc are just starting to open the door of their AFL careers n have massive future potential to offer our established core of quality players.
Add in a talent like Yazz n a couple of mature fringe players with upside n there's no reason to panic over next year or a couple of years after. Obviously everyone would like to pinch a gun player off another club, or perhaps dip deep into a potentially better draft next year, but nothings ever perfect.
We've thrown nothing future away, nor lost anything for the here n now, just at the time where the last few years of list turbulence finally starts to settle back to relative normal, might be the smartest move of all.

Anyone would think we are much worse off under Dimma than under any of the previous half dozen coaches we've had. Apparently we are much better off playing sexy football but always finishing 12th or thereabouts.

Can you point out this sexy football period? I suppose we did bend over and get on all fours for Geelong in 07, that must have been it

Good ol' socialist pinkie RFC achieved sweet FA. We needed (desperately) a ruck and someone to replace Chaplin; we got neither. Apologists will say we replaced Tuck and Jackson from how many years ago?
Not good enough folks, look fwd to Morris being the defensive small fwd in rd 1 while Yarran plays orf half back

This is an important point. It would have been nice to move on some of the players we don't value, but outside of delisting them (no one will give us anything of worth for list cloggers) and getting nothing there's not a lot we can do there. Good sides don't let good players go and that's what we've done, we've retained all the important players.

It’s great that we’re competitive and it’s great that we win but it ain’t great how we compete, and how we win.

..for me this season was the most boring year of football I’ve seen Richmond play. Some mongrel hybrid prison game. Most wins felt like a loss. Even in the bad old days at least our incompetence offered some laughs amongst the tears. Seriously antman how many times did you leave the ground thinking 'wow how amazing was that?' you know that sense that you've witnessed something special. Something to remember.

If I hadn’t had gone to any of the games before the finals I pretty much missed nothing!!! Hopefully Yarran will bring some thrilling passages of play to our game.
Imagine if the RFC had’ve picked up Treloar, Aish and Howe. Why can Collingwood do it and we can’t? What's wrong with us?

puntrd64, I look forward to missing any game in which Morris is selected.

CarnTheTiges, we haven't retained all the important players we retained the entire list. If we're really that good why do we keep getting tarred and feathered week one at the business end?

Nope. I gave it a D but a ruck and key back aren't what we were or should have been targeting. A grade midfield talent is what we needed. This was our key need.

Based on what you expected even if we had got AT it would have still be a faliure.

I hate that we can't win a final and it's left a pretty nasty taste in my mouth. However you have to win the games to get there in the first place and we did do that this year. Let's see how the Pies go with their pickups. The guys they've picked up in recent years haven't exactly helped them up the ladder or prevented them from copping a 95 point hiding at our hands. Huge question marks over Aish's ability and Howe does some flashy things, but didn't really do a lot to get Melbourne off the bottom of the ladder. Treloar will be good for them and after they've jeopardised their future to get him, he'd need to be. If we can win a final then they'll be lining up to come to Punt Rd. But as I've said before there's only about 1 or 2 genuinely good players available in the trade period. The rest are average players that get talked up.

Two very important questions for the club to address.

Retaining good players is only half of the equation. We need to be able to attract A grade talent.
