Party like it's 1999 easy.

thanks tigerman. Nice to have someone to celebrate with this evening. While im feeling smug and happy, Im a little hamstrung party-wise, cause every spring, I do 2 things.

1. aggressively punt the G1's, and
2. go on a detox to purge all the winter booze and chocolate.

But im having a sneaky little venezuelan rum in a tea cup, so my ethereal wife thinks its Rosehip tea.

On the Gee Gees, wow. Winx has certainly gone to No1. all time earner for me, by quite a margin, but Sunline still holds the mantle for me. Her race colours tip the scales in her favour.

I suspect Hartnell's heart broke just a little today. 400 out, he pinned his ears back and lengthened stride, and Winx went passed him like she was on an Autobarn, and he was a truck.

I think he might taper off a bit, and will lay him in the MC.

Which leaves this springs favourite, Jameka, a stand out for me.

I always punt with as much reserve on the 2 mile handicap, as I use abandon on the Cox Plate. but ive got a Mitt Full of filthy bookies cash, so I'll reinvest some on her @ $6.5 tonight I reckon.

My favourite horses are Kingston Town, Might and Power and So You Think. Soft spot for Doriemus (backed him when he won the Cup, quinelled him with M&P when they ran 1-2), Pierro (got the tip months out that he'd win the Slipper, wish they'd let him race on) and Zipping (backed him every time he won Sandown).

Kingston Town would be in my Top 5. Mine would go

Sunline, Winx, Lankaan Ruppee, Kingston Town, Jester Boy

Jester Boy probably won $100K winning mile races in the bush, but they were my formative years and I did well off him. 3rd up in a bush welter 1600m, he was pocket money quadrupled.

Ok. On the win and the mare.

Winx's margin of eight lengths flattered the beaten brigade by about least five IMO. At least. Morally it was fifteen to my eye. (There was no green Highland Reel or peak-form Criterion in that Cox Plate.)

And so I'm grateful for the pleasure of this year's Cox Plate. Seeing the making of history as the best horse to race in this country since Galilee destroyed the field.

Galilee was a bit before my time. (I was seven , IIRC, when I backed him.) But that is the only name we need to mention here. There is simply no other horse that comes close to this Winx champion in my lifetime and I'm including the sprinters.

For mine I'm calling it Winx > Galilee.

Winx is the greatest champion of my time.

I just spoke to a a geriatric former low-profile Sydney SP and lifetime sceptic and he rated Winx's moral margin at eighteen lengths.

between my spring cleansing diet, and my Winx-induced hyper-manic episode this time last year, Im employing quite a bit of reserve Capn.

Just re-stocked my safe, and pretended nothing happened.

might buy the missus a nice dress. or take her to Hoi Ann for a few weeks, after the draft. If I err towards such outlets, instead of buying motorcycles and firearms, she generally stays fairly contented :hihi

That is how a gentleman, plays, easy. Except for the bit about not buying firearms. ;D Or fewer.

I've had no horse for the spring. Usually I've upended on something by now. It was supposed to be Highland Reel in the Caulfield Cup but no luck there. He stayed for the Arc.

There are horses on my mind. The first is All Out of Love in the Victoria Derby.

I was strangely delighted by his Derby Trial run. Possied to win. (This was crucial.) On speed like a racehorse with an agenda. Ridden a bit too aggressively as you do the best horse in any race. Loomed as the winner. And stopped as if shot at the 200m. Beaten five.

Bottomless in betting. Bottomless. $31 the 'Fair SP.

He blew up. They knew he would. The good hoop Michael Walker made sure he did.

This is a Derby-training stable. So why is Seaburge $6 for the Cantala? Shouldn't he be in the Derby?

All Out of Love is firming with Laddies. $51/34/31 in the past two days. He's still $51 around the traps. I rarely back the winner of the Victoria Derby. Because I rarely like one in it. TBPH I hate the race.

My best for the spring so far. (I have another.) Take the $51 if you like a bet.

I already took the $61. ;D

And I agree. It was a great Derby hitout. It would be nice to know if he's been eating like a horse since.

I'm warming to one horse in the Melbourne Cup and cooling on another. They are in flux but I like them both.

I have thought for some time that I can get some value in the Melbourne Cup this year. Lee Freedman recently described the beaten brigade in the 2016 Caulfield Cup as 'what's around at the moment.' I share his enthusiasm. (Even more so about the Cox Plate also rans.)

***

Howard Be Thy Name blew up badly in his most recent run - the 2016 Herbert Power Handicap. I didn't mind that but we haven't seen him since. And he looked three runs behind. The stable can be very hard to read. The situation suggests HBTN was injured or had a cold or something. But no news.

It's nommed for the Bendigo Cup on Wednesday. Acceptances, betting and performance will tell us a lot. It's the one I'm cooling on. But that could change suddenly. I want some news. I like the horse's prospects overall and I think he's the right type. But there is bugger all evidence coming in.

***

Vengeur Masque. I took the $501/81 about him in the CC. He got into ran $67 but ran $101. The run was bad in all the right ways. This bloke reminds me of On A Jeune. Clearly wants real tempo, much further and a long straight. He looks a Melbourne Cup horse to me.

He ran fourth in the Prix de Reux (3yo and up 2500m) as a 3yo. And then a poor fifth in the GB St Leger in the final run of his 3yo campaign. He's a northern 4yo, not a 5yo. Ten career starts. His four Australian starts to date have been ok. He's a grinder. I see On A Jeune.

In his few Australian runs VM has been stout. He's not getting any tempo. He's underdone. And he's not taking a position. But that final 800m in the CC was good. It was better than Our Ivanhowe's IMO.

If we're on him we desperately want a change of jockey. P Moloney gets awfully lost in the Big City. He's not much good and deluded. But at 50kg we may have to cop him. He could ride to instruction. We're 34 in the order ATM. Is Moroney planning a Hotham Hcp run?

I took the 200/1 for a few bob. He was 66/1 and 50/1. But 365 and Laddies have let him slide to $81. I want a bigger price. But I do want to go again. I like this horse.

The 3yos facing off in this year's Ascot Vale Stakes Danehill (now called a Coolmore) are the hope of the nation. Glamour coming through.

I'll declare my hand. When I saw Star Turn destroy that Schillaci field I thought I was watching Schillaci with a new hair colour. Smash. Watch him put three on Fell Swoop at the 300m.

https://www.racing.com/form/2016-10-08/caulfield/race/10/results

That was a massacre. Malaguerra would wipe the floor with the mares Extreme Choice beat in the Moir. Malaguerra is a solid 1:8 1200m comer. Between top and second level any year. And I think you know Fell Swoop by now. Slaughtered (by Bowman) into second in the (weak) Manikato.

Now to Astern. (Star Turn vs Ass Turn ;D)

As 3yos they've met once. http://racing.racingnsw.com.au/InteractiveForm/Meeting.aspx?meetcode=Mzg0MzQyNDQ4NzU%3d#Race7

Fancied at 6/4, Tommy Berry sat Star Turn outside the leader. He was taken wide by the genius (Bowman) who led and decided the rail was off. (Jockeys are renowned for their intelligence.) And Astern drove through on the rail without going around a blade of grass to ambush Berry and put one length on him.

Berry wakes up at this stage and enlivens his mount. Astern and Star Turn go to the line much as they were at the 50m. But Star Turn makes up ground in the 100m until then. I prefer Star Turn's run and his form.

Anyway it's a cracking race, maybe the highlight of the spring so far - except for the mare. I've been waiting for this Star Turn since that Schillaci. And I've teed off.

Spook's filly Pretty Punk.

She's a percentage play. Watch her weaken in the final 30m of the Derby Trial (now called the 'Geelong Classic'). She didn't get the trip. Or she'd have won. Against he boys.

https://www.racing.com/form/2016-10-19/bet365-geelong/race/6

Tumultuous is fancied in the Victoria Derby. She cleaned him up him in the Trial.

This weekend she's back to 10f.

And back in the girls playground. She could be over the top. The preparation is not orthodox and the stable is not top echelon. But they're smart enough to see what's left in the feed bin.

The Wakeful favourite had a few excuses at her most recent Big City failure. But she was beaten on her merits at MURTOA the run before. You've gotta take her on.

Pretty Punk is around $6 in the Wakeful. I've taken that. She is well overs IMO.

Star Turn = Bet. Of. The. Program.

100% with you Jack. 100%.

Will take a power of beating.

He's my only tee off of the spring, Bryan. Looks a champion in the making to me. It's a great race. Awesome.

Hopefully there's money in the camp on Derby night.

Yes mate, Oceanographer the other to unload on for leysy.

Done plenty of form all week, with a heap more to go. ;D

The money comes from the study, Leyser. I'm back to mine.

Mossbeat in the last at Sale on Sunday. Blinkers off as she has been over racing - is much better suited off the pace. Likely wet track won't hurt her chances.

I am in Bali recovering from the stress of Trade Week (or month or whatever it was) so can't watch it or even bet - may have to rely on some left behind! Couldn't recommend a win bet but may be good value for a place - haven't seen any odds.

Happy to leave MV to the experts (which in case you haven't noticed is not me).

Back for Derby Day.

Good punting one and all

Well, of course, she found one better on the day. Another placing to add to an impressive 14 placing's (and 1 win) from 28 starts. $2.60 a place was ok though. Next off to Cranbourne next Friday night. Might be a long week, Flemington 4 days and a sneaky trip to Crimebourne on Friday night!

Have backed Oceanographer ($4 on Sportsbet early days) also on Missrock in the Wakeful, So Si Bon in the Derby and have specked Almoonqith for Tuesdays big one. Has been set specifically for this since winning the Sandown Cup last year and being pre qualified has not been all that interested in its first few races as was just doing a pre season.

Best days racing of the year on Saturday so looking forward to it. Good punting all!
