Good onya Michelle. Stick it up the chauvinists.

"As for female jockeys I'd like to say 'no comment'. I'd like to, but I have to say 'no bet' as well. Female jockeys just don't have the strength to ride some horses. I'm not potting women jockeys, it's just that I never back horses ridden by them."

That's the belief of thousands of horsepeople. Doesn't mean it's not open to challenge, the same way that the international have led us to question our methods of preparing horses. Would be interested to see any statistics showing women jockeys on par with men, or otherwise. At the moment the scoreboard reads men 154, women 1.

There are rare situations, e.g. on a freewheeling horse or one which races better for women riders, where it won't deter me. As a rule though, if nothing separates two in-form runners of equal ability but the gender of the rider, it's "Sorry, miss".

Doesn't mean this year's winner isn't a good story, either.

Wonderful story lines from the winner.

Terrible race. Dettori shouldn't be welcomed back.

he took out a third of the field when they were about to swoop, amazing, never seen anything like it, not that I'm any big punter. But it was like a David Cloke pack steamroll, timed to perfection. I reckon Michelle Payne would be pretty appreciative, Preferment was looking good, amongst others.

Thought it was too far back after not having much luck early, but we'll never know after it and others were "Frankied".

It's fine for overseas riders to label our racing the wild west, assert that we ride too tight etc, but it rings a bit hollow when they're the ones riding like cowboys.

So how ya feeling Frank?
You travel half way round the world to ride an English horse worth millions (our jockeys aren't good enough).
And
Ya get beaten by
... a cheap nag
... ridden by a bloody woman
... has a down Sydrone Strapper
... and trained by a bloke whose headquarters are in a pub in Ballarat.

Well done mate.
Go home and tell them how sh*thouse we are.

GUST OF WIND – Chad Schofield
Tweet: "Seems plenty thought it was me who caused that interference in the cup but would like to set the record straight. Suspension: 03-11-2015 Flemington 7 - 8 Max Dynamite - Frankie Dettori - 1 MONTH + $20,000 fine."

WHO SHOT THEBARMAN – Blake Shinn
"He was grinding away then we were checked at the 150m. Probably cost him running fifth or sixth."

HOKKO BRAVE – Craig Williams
"Offset the barrier and got into a lovely run but got a severe bump in the straight and it took the wind out of him."

PREFERMENT – Hugh Bowman
"Flattened at the 300m."

GRAND MARSHAL – Jim Cassidy
"I went half a furlong and got taken out of the race. I got smashed. Do I get a prize for staying on?"

SNOW SKY – Ryan Moore
"I wasn’t going to win but found trouble in the straight."

I think the right stat you should be quoting is Cup starters to winners ratio....... women are miles in front.

Money talks. I'd expect to see most of the men booted off for next year's race, then. Why sacrifice your chance of winning a Cup for the sake of chauvinism?

Michelle's rides have earned connections well over $20,000,000 in prize money and that's from limited opportunity. Dr Turf has missed plenty of collects due to his ignorant thinking. I wonder how many of the chauvinists bagging women jockeys have ridden a racehorse themselves. There's far more to it than strength.

This is not really any different in principle to saying "I'm opposed to Muslim immigration because..." and getting howled down and labelled a racist.

"I don't bet on women jockeys because..." results in "Get stuffed you chauvinist".

Racetrack wisdom holds that women jockeys' comparative lack of strength is a disadvantage in horse racing. Not sure why this causes offence. There may also be differences in less tangible things like assertiveness and aggression/willingness to take narrow splits. Let's be honest here, Christmas came early for Michelle Payne. Sue me.

:hihi @ "Sue me".

It's a massive generalisation to make blanket claims about female jockeys overall. Lumping them together based on their gender is ludicrous. Some horses need stronger riders, some need a gentle touch. Jockeys are often matched to horses different needs. Some blokes would struggle with a horse a woman can handle and vice versa. Bev Buckingham rode several cup winners and won 3 Tassie jockey premierships as well as apprentice of the year.

Michelle's Christmas might have come early. Winning the Cup would be a highlight in any jockey's career. Don't forget the $20,000,000+ prizemoney indicates she's had plenty of other success too.

If strength is an issue, then how do you explain women and men competing head to head in the Cross Country event at the Olympics?

As with male jockeys, some are better than others. But the best men are much better than the best women.
