I have serious doubts about So You Think running 3200m. But you can never question Bart's logic but a horse who's only run 2000m taking 3200 for the first time against some serious staying opposition, for mine he is a cannot have in the Cup.

Me too, Cogs... But I reckon, if you've got a tough and sound champion you have to have a crack.

Thank christ we don't have to put up with that WBGY being the flag bearer anymore! Even with the race run to suit him (slow tempo), I still thought he wouldn't be able to run into the minors, but as was mentioned he had an easy time of it while the 9yo was busting his smile.

You're right, Jimbob... Zipping is incredibly underrated... I was really critical of the way he was being placed a couple of years back, but the long and short of it is that he's in career best form at 9yo, with 4mil in the bank. Think he's going for his fourth Sandown Classic in a row. If you consider that two of his wins in that race were immediately after competing in the Melbourne Cup, it highlights just how tough he is.

Does anyone have a position on BC and HL? When there's a champion bloke and a champion mare, I always take the bloke... but Black Caviar did an absolute demoliton job on True Persuasion (who goes alright), probably more impressive than the way HL annihilated him at the same course. Can't believe the TAB opened her up $1.8 fixed.

What did everyone think about Gai mentioning So You Think as winning soft races? She may not have been far off the mark, but it just struck me as particularly audacious, considering her mare had been racing against small fields, and had no idea what a 15 horse field looked like before her unimpressive effort against average opposition in the Toorak.

RE: Derby Day. I just can't help but find myself looking forward to the Cup a little bit more. It looms Cup since the great Makybe notched her 3rd win in front of blokes like Xcellent, Leica Falcon & Vinnie Roe. But that Cup lacked depth outside of those runners. Best Cup in my conscious life time as I was too young to remember when rain ruined a potential clash of Better Loosen Up, Let's Elope and Super Impose. Let's hope both Shocking and So You Think pull up nicely.

When did Gai say that? After Cox Plate, if so she is potting More Joyous.

A horse can only beat what is around on any given day or at the time. You could argue Might and Power never beat much either. SYT has won two Cox Plates in 10 runs, that alone is amazing. Think it deserves the kudos. It may have been spent on the line but it took off early to put pressure on MJ- I reckon if Arnold waited longer it would have won by more with MJ holding on for second with the bludgers at the back sooking about a lack of pace.

SYT could well win the Cup with people looking back saying, gee why didn't I take the 5's or 6's on offer, what value that was.

On HL v BC, I think HL ran better closing sectionals but the track was rated better. HL has also had a setback. Tough call. Just hope they race.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Haven't seen any of Hay List's wins as I was away but Black Caviar's win on Saturday was one of the most impressive wins I have seen. Won untouched against a fairly classy field (albeit mares, Hot Danish and Melito). With a query over Hay List (apparently worked in brilliant fashion at Flem this morning) you would have to go for BC. Possibly a query down the straight for BC, but other than that HL would have to be an absolute champ to beat her.

Reckon Shocking is on target to repeat his dose of last year. Whilst SYT is a super horse think the Cup winner needs to be prepared for that race not run in it as almost an afterthought. Although JB Cummings is an absolute master.

Gotta laugh at all those on the border of getting/missing a run when they have known the conditions since day 1 and hoped to beat the handicapper and get in with a light weight - and now are in trouble. Don't feel sorry for them one bit. Having said that there are a couple qualified who are taking up space.

My girl has caught a virus and out for a spell - :'( so much for Oaks Day. Also think the winner of the Vase (Rekindled Interest) has to be extremely hard to beat in the Derby. The winner of the Vase has a great record in the Derby.

Geez, no love for WBGY, selling it a bit short i reckon. Zipping does seem to avoid the spotlight somehow but I certainly rate it.

Ill have BC over haylist, dont think ive been so keen to see a matchup ever before.

As for SYT in the cup, i have doubts but as you say if you had him youd have to be exited!

Yep. I certainly wouldn't kick him out of my stable.

PRE Punters Club

Moonee Valley hoodoo continues

Bringbakflemmo and Remote Tiger could not break the betting hoodoo that is Moonee Valley. No wonder the bookies call it Money Valley!

There is always this week for the Punters Club – and with a new set of tipsters and the biggest day of racing for the year – the sky is the limit.

This Saturday 30 October 2010 Derby Day the champion and challenger are -

Champion = Bernie
Challenger = Tiger44

Bernie & Tiger44 – could you please post or PM me to show that you are ok to be the punters this weekend?

The rules are simple -

1) Each punting day (usually Saturday) there is a challenger and a champion
2) Both the challenger and the champion have $10 to bet - either win or place or eachway and/or allup.

E.G. Either –
$10 win horse A, or
$10 place horse A, or
$5 win horse A and $5 win horse B, or
$5 win horse A and $5 place horse B, or
$5 place horse A and $5 place horse B, or
$5 eachway horse A, or
For those who wish to dare it is OK to have
$5 win horse A allup a win horse B, and $5 place horse A allup a place horse B, or
$5 win horse A and $5 place horse A allup a place horse B

3) If you collect more than the $10 outlay and more than your opponent on the day you become the champion next week.

4) Selections can be at any Saturday metropolitan meeting in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Adelaide. (On weekends where there are Group races on the Monday or Sunday as well as or instead of the Saturday racing the PRE Punter(s) in the chair can forgo the Saturday racing and bet on the Monday or Sunday). Please post your selections on the thoroughbred thread by 11.00am on the day of the races so it gives me time to find them and put them on.

5) All profits on your bet (no matter how small) will be posted to Rosy's bank account to help with the admin costs of PRE

6) All bets are put on Remote Tigers Darwin Bookie IASbet.com hence there is no outlay by other members of the Punting Club.

7) A total of collects for each member will be maintained by Remote Tiger and the member with the largest total of collects by the last day of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival will be announced the PRE Punter of the year, 2010.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Looking forward to it RT - will post sometime Friday as I leave home about 9.00am Saturday for the big day at Flemington. Weather does not look too promising - may have to look for wet trackers!

Really like Rekindled Interest in the Derby but not on a wet track. Will ponder and post later.

Good luck Bernie

Tiger 44

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Thanks for the good wishes T44, and bad luck on Fabulist. Darn bad luck just as she was hitting City weekend grade!

I will also post my tips late Friday as I will be fishing this weekend.

Tis a pity we can't go and lob the dough on my bloke at Canberra next Tuesday as he's back to his best and will sort them out if he doesn't cop a wet track. For fellow posters, I don't think Canberra is a TAB meeting outside the ACT.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

RT Does this mean ill be up on cup day or are we sticking to weekends only?

Whats your bloke called Bernie?

Good punting Bernie & Tiger 44!

She started yammering on during the week in the lead up to the Cox Plate. Couldn't believe it.

SYT was always going to get his hand forced by Zipping, and Arnold pressed the button early and broke all their hearts. He will be ridden icy cold at Flemington, certainly won't be going flat out at the 600.

14-1 for All Silent in the Salinger at the mo. Same for Eagle Falls. Can understand why people would jump off All Silent with two poor runs as he has had his share of problems and he isn't getting any younger... but I honestly think Eagle Falls is running up to his ability, and really wasn't suited last time behind Black Caviar. In both cases, we're getting overs. If All Silent produces anything like his best he will destroy them and Eagles Falls rarely puts in a bad one.

You going to back your bloke, Leysy?

Just saw that myself for eagle falls, looks tempting.

Mate depends on the weather. All Silents biggest fans shouldnt be touching him until the day. He doesnt go a yard in the wet & it is forecast to bucket down Sat arvo.

Eagle Falls, whilst no out & out star handles it & is finally in a winnable race. Will spec him e/w.

Typhoon Tracy is the moral of all morals back to mares grade. Gee she's been good to navy.

Just hope all the forecast rain doesnt hit & spoil the best day on the calender.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

The rain is the massive variable here... It all depends how much we get. The BOM has said that the rain will be patchy before midday, before becoming widespread. As they haven't watered and today is incredibly hot, dry and windy, I'm hoping that the track will be in decent condition for the early part of the card.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

I will have $10 win on Linton in Race 2 please RT. Needs to win to get in the Cup and think it has a fair bit of upside on its win in the Herbert Power.

Others I like on the day are Skilled (R1) Dizlago (R3) Rekindled Interest (R6)and Dubleanny (R8). The good things should win SYT and Typhoon Tracy.

Good punting everyone.

yeah it is Gyps.

The track could easily be anything between a good 3 & a heavy 10.
