Well my girl ran a very good race - only just pipped for third on the line, damn! Very happy with her effort first up from a short spell. Back to the Valley in a couple of weeks for a Sunday twilight meeting where hopefully she can draw a barrier.

Very nice run T44.

Do you have other horses with DOB?

No, only the one - that is enough! And only a small share at that.

Blood 17 - we had a lot of fun with a Centaine mare a few years back who managed to sneak a Group 1 at Caulfield (Pernod) - this one is by Savabeel out of a Centaine mare so bit of a link. Only hope she runs half as well.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Pernod was my favourite mare when she was racing and I tipped her every time in little no-money competitions I was in at the time. The Centaine influence is terrific. You'll have success with Fabulist, I'm sure.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Remote, one thing that sticks in my mind is, many years back, Fred Astaire had a share in a Star Kingdom chestnut racing in Melbourne. After umpteen attempts to secure a name, Fred said, "Call it anything." So they authorities did....he raced as Anything and was quite a handy type. I saw Fred sitting in the grand stand at Flemington one day, but wasn't game enough to dance up to see him. Incidentally, if you want my entire story on racehorses I saw when working, plus others I saw later on TV, send me your email address and I'll send it to you. It's long enough to keep you reading for months!!!!

Wow Fred Astaire - my mum swooned over him when he would appear on the old black & white TV. I was a kid at the time and didn't understand all the fuss about a bloke who could dance.

Would love to read your manuscript - why don't you get it published? Will PM you with my details........

Another one from the memory banks

Many years ago - the whole street I lived in here in Canberra backed a horse called Beer Street - I think it was a Caulfield Cup - and it saluted at some very juicy odds. All our neighbors that afternoon had an impromptu barbeque and I have never seen my Dad and our neighbors so "elephants trunk" as I did that night.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Beer Street........what better name for a celebration! Rosy has that story you mentioned and will send it to you.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Also a horse called Free Beer won the back to back Launceston Cups in the mid 90's.

Both times won at very juicy odds from memory. & you guessed it Free Beer was served by the race club after the race.

Banning jumps racing is a disgrace. Anyone who has been to the Warrnambool three day carnival knows that the jumps races are vital to the carnival. Won’t go on and on about how many horses will be killed now that jumps’ racing has been banned. But the vocal minority must think it’s better to kill hundreds to save 10. I think any person with any common sense can see that it’s a backward decision.

I'm ambivalent. Despite the efforts of authorities to make jumps racing safer, the incidence of casualties is still high. On the other hand, Fran Houlihan's quote - "I can't believe the custodians of our sport are bowing to unemployed ratbags" - strikes a chord.

Chanced to turn on the TV late last Saturday night and saw this steeplechase run at Newbury in England - a reminder that there are still some things they do better than us. Old-fashioned walk-up start adds to the appeal.

Sad to think this great spectacle is going to be lost to Victorian racecourses after such a long history. Once part of the Australiuan vernacular (as in e.g. "a roll of notes even Mosstrooper couldn't jump"), a measure of how jumps racing has slipped is the lack of fanfare given to the last Australian great, Karasi. Will likely be forgotten, unlike Crisp who is famous for running second! Have already arranged a week off in May to properly farewell the Warrnambool carnival.

Despite its reputation as a shaky betting proposition, jumps form generally holds up very well. My experience is that a 9/2 shot over jumps will give at least as good a sight, on average, as its equivalent on the flat, and I could count the number of fallers I've backed in 20 years on one hand.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

One major factor wrong with Victorian jumps racing is the badly designed hurdles and fences, that horses are treating with disrespect, going too fast and getting the idea they can just brush through that yellow stuff. If jumping is to continue, hurdle races should be abolished to my mind and new fences designed, taller than the present "Mickey Mouse" ones and with more safety padding down low on the approach side to protect horses who misjudge a leap. To run races until the end of 2010 without changing these obstacles would be completely crazy.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Can you help me out on this one B17?

There's another story from around the same era but I cannot find it anywhere on the internet. There was a massive children's charity organisation. A most high profile and respected businessman was the head of it and the money kept rolling in. He started siphoning money off for gambling on the horses and got deep into debt. His aim was to win it back, cover his tracks and never bet again. One day he was at Randwick and winning well. He bet up his winnings on a horse in Melbourne, listened to the race call and it won. He had achieved his aim and could now quit. A few minutes later the course siren went off and "protest in Melbourne" was announced over the PA system. He collapsed against the wall and waited in agony for the steward's enquiry. Sadly for him it was "protest upheld". After that day he started betting recklessly until he was eventually caught and sent to jail in disgrace.

I wish someone could recall the guy's name and that of the charity

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

My 3yo filly (Fabulist) is in at Caulfield on Wednesday, race 6 number 9 over 1400m. Drawn beautifully in 3 with the rail out about 12m it is important to be near the lead. She should settle in the first few and with a good run and a little luck may get the chocolates. Just in time for Christmas!

Fingers and everything else crossed.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Good luck T44. I hope I remember to watch the race.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Australia's most popular horse behind Eagle Falls, Apache Cat has been retired due to a chipped sesamoid.

One of the countries top sprinters of the decade.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Fabulist wasn't disgraced today, Tiger44. She was squeezed a couple of times, unbalanced, but fought on strongly to the line.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Yeh, as an owner u'd be happy with that showing for sure.

As an owner, I know you cant make your own luck during a race and sometimes the steering is not all that it should be. Mine returned from a spell 5 weeks ago so I will keep you guys informed.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Thanks for the comments in support folks. She ran her usual honest race, tries her heart out which is great to see. Copped a bit of interference at the top of the straight when both her and the eventual winner were going for the same run. She got pushed into the inside where the ground was inferior, the winner went to the outside and won the race. We protested and although the stewards conceded that we were disadvantaged decided not to give us the race. Still really pleased with her effort.

Hopefully off to Flemington on New Years Day for a 1400m 3yo fillies race.
