Yeah jb, you're welcome to borrow it as long as I can find it. It's not on my bookshelf where I thought it was. Something tells me I need to do a cleanup.

LTRTR would love to borrow after jb if possible.

Yep, no problem.

I am currently reading Bart Cummings book and in it he refers to the Big Philou controversy. As is known he was nobbled by Les Lewis but in the book Cummings says he thinks he knows who Lewis was working for but won't name that person due to defamation laws. Pretty sure Doubles bookies faced huge payouts if Big Philou had won the Cup that year and you do your money cold if the horse is a late scratching so ..........

Bill Waterhouse was implicated at the time. He wasn't fielding on Melbourne other than the Cups double, for which his betting sheets showed only a $20K payout if Big Philou won. You're right - Big Philou was a loser for many Melbourne bookies.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

The filly that I have a small share in is racing at MV this weekend. (Fabulist). She has had a brief letup after her 6th at Sandown on a heavy track, where she was never comfortable. Has drawn barrier 9, should settle midfield and hopefully be competitive. She has been working well but does not want it too wet. Perhaps each way if the track is not too damp. Fingers crossed.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Banning jumps racing is a disgrace. Anyone who has been to the Warrnambool three day carnival knows that the jumps races are vital to the carnival. Won’t go on and on about how many horses will be killed now that jumps’ racing has been banned. But the vocal minority must think it’s better to kill hundreds to save 10. I think any person with any common sense can see that it’s a backward decision.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Wel said MB78.

As you say the Vocal minority have had there "win".

Be interesting to see if they are protesting as the prospective jumps horses that couldnt perofrm on the flat get carted off as Dog meat when things end in 12 months.

Bewildering & wrong.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Gee didn't even realise this was still being reviewed. Amazing really - if it is wrong then is should be banned immediately.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Minority wins against an inefficient bunch of racing authorities. So many older horses will have to be "disposed" of, the number of people who will lose their jobs is incalculable, Warrnambool and Oakbank could "die" now.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

You can't have horses regularly being destroyed on the race track.  I'd like to see a comparison between casualties here, where horses that aren't up to flat racing are flogged to eke a bit more out of them on their way to the knackery (as some claim is ex-racehorses fate), and in England where horses are actually bred for the purpose.  The only jumps race I know about there is Aintree.

I don't go with the argument that more horses will carted off as dog meat.  If that's their fate if they don't jump, then it's only delaying the inevitable if they do jump first. It doesn't paint a good picture of the industry to make such emotive claims.

I've long ago stopped watching jumps races.  I've seen the screen come out too many times and it haunts me. I've heard the bones snap and I've heard the horses scream in agony.  I find it distressing to watch a horse that can barely move it's legs being whipped to get it over yet another jump.

I don't know the answer but jumps racing needed thorough investigation and action.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Rosy, old horses past their ability to race are hard to place, as they can be too "frisky" for a child or even a grown up. They aren't always like Subzero, who visits hospitals and is as quite as a lamb. Keep an eye out on your country travels for skinny, underfed horses in paddocks with very little grass, obviously not being cared for and approaching a sad end. Like you, I shuddered when horses were hurt and euthanised in jumps races but these same horses were looked after like "kings" and "queens" by their trainers until such unfortunate happenings.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Yep Blood, but it's only delaying the inevitable as I said. In order to milk a bit more out of them less than average horses are often flogged on the jumps circuit but they'd still face a similar fate, albeit a year or two later and if they don't break their neck or leg in a race, than what people claim would be their future if they hadn't been trained as jumpers.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

I have to say the jumpers are looked after as well as horses who race on the flat, Rosy, as they can win quite a lot of money for their connections. Don't forget the new whips don't hurt the horses as before, also. The stewards have gone crazy fining and suspending jockeys now for using a whip a couple of times too often, as the horse isn't being punished. I was 100% against whips and I actually witnessed a few horses coming back with marks on them where jockeys had been thrashing them. I saw one horse bleeding on one side of his rump. The jockey concerned didn't ride for that committeeman again after copping a huge blast from him, well deserved. Now the whips are soft. Let the RSPCA delve into the shocking conditions of some hens, pigs, cattle, pet shops and privately owned animals who are suffering severely enough to make a person shed a tear. Hugh Wirth should marry Bob Green the politician and retire.

PS: I agree with many things you've said, boss!

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Well I am looking for an old (free) horse for my paddock. Maybe I'll find one now!

I'm not questioning how they're looked after Blood. There's no doubt though that many of the horses that go over jumps weren't quite up to a flat racing career. I know a lot of horses love jumping too, and I don't deny most would be well fed and groomed. They are still pushed to their limits , often when they're beyond giving, on race day with some very dire consequences at times though. There is a far higher mortality rate in jumps races and I think, for that reason, it needs investigating.

I agree with so much you say, Rosy, that I won't continue with my garble.

Nothing wrong with a good debate.  It's interesting to know how others think about things, and you know I respect your thoughts. Fondly rosy. :hearton

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Well my girl ran a very good race - only just pipped for third on the line, damn! Very happy with her effort first up from a short spell. Back to the Valley in a couple of weeks for a Sunday twilight meeting where hopefully she can draw a barrier.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Tiger44, it was a good run and I really like her breeding. Good luck. I'm positive she'll do well. :clap
