Thoroughbred racing

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Away from the saucer none of that form will hold up. On to the best day's racing anywhere in the world bar none Derby Day. Whobegotyou should walk it in although i think if Carnero gets allowed to settle back he may be the quinella horse. Looking forward to it and hopefully the Cat meets the Target in the feature sprint of the carnival what a ripper that will be.

Bombed out in the Cox Plate but a very good day for jb. Would have been even better if Princess Mariza had won the last but with that losing and after a dozen Boags, I ripped a quaddie at Ascot, the Meadows and Wentwoth Park and jagged them all.

Sea Battle was the main source but had income from Whobegotyou, Millbank and Gallopin who I was tipped into in the morning.

Probably the slowest run Cox Plate ever and I was warned that Opie only had one ride for the day and would be the cause of Princess Coup's downfall. Though no matter who rode it with that pace it wouldn't have won. Apart from Nikolic of all jockeys none showed any initiative so well done to Zipping to jag second.

Got some cash now for the 4 days of the carnival.

Similar day. Missed the Quaddie by leaving out the winner on the Cox but got some good mail for Rosehill on Smashing and Voice Commander. The Cox was a shambles. Michael Rodd dominated the race from the front. Great ride.

You must have been pumped when Voice Commander won. Looked gone halfway down the straight. Good to see some PREnders having a win.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Dolphin Jo is out of the cup. He's damaged a suspensory ligament. Clearly racing him three times in three weeks didn't agree with him.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Agree Gypsy, Caulfield Cup was never on their agenda it was MV Cup then Melbourne. Would have had more chance to finish top 10 Melbourne then figure in the finish at Caulfield. Trainers that change their mind on a horse prepartion never do much good.

Also fields for the greatest days racing of the year

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Leysey, Will Baughurst get a run in the Cup?

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Doubtful Dave,

The old Baughurst is flying at the moment aint. Geez he's been good to leysy.

Not really up to a cup field though.

Maybe a Sandown classic or Queen Eliz later in carnival are on the agenda.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

A shame about Efficient. Probably couldn't have won on that preparation anyway.

disappointing to only see 11 acceptances for the Saab. It's ballot free FFS, so why the *smile* aren't more maggots trying to scrape into the field with feather weights?

Yeah, some of the fields numbers are down aren't they Gyps.

Not sure what you mean re: Efficients prep. He didn't race beyond 2000m last prep either & has been set specifically for this for a year now so they'd have him where they want him.

Bring on saturday, cant wait.

In last year's preparation Efficient started in the Memsie (1400), The Feehan (1600), The Turnbull (2000) and the Cox Plate (2040) in the lead up.

This time in he started in The Makybe Diva (1600) and the Turnbull. That just isn't enough racing, and he couldn't possible have won with that preparation. I'm a fan of Johnny Sadler, but Lloyd Williams has no idea. Why would you tinker with a winning formula?

Really pumped about the Salinger. My favourite mare in the whole country is running in it. Hot Danish. A very overrated mare who isn't good enough at this level. Miraculously $5 on TAB sportsbet. More suited at listed and Group 3 level against her own sex.

The rogue Biscayne Bay is going around again in his grand final in this preperation. Wanted to hang last start around the bends which he doesn't like. Straight course horse at 40-1.

Still plenty to keep us interested despite some of the tiny Sydney-esque fields. Loving Tears I Cry at 30-1 also. Plenty of value again.

Very clever, Blood. :hihi

The highlight of last weekend's racing was the Sale Cup - Number 15 or whatever - Crabs... was scratched.

Okay. Last weekend's racing, the lowlight - The Soff Cox Plate. Bang. Bang. That was one bullet for each of us, Rosy. Me and the mongrel. BTW if your family ever finds out you've backed Sirmione they can get power of attorney in any court in the land. So keep it quiet, friends. I've got winners to back.

Danny Nackerlick had a whinge after the race that best horse didn't win. Well, that would be your fault if you feel that way, Nackerlick as you were the one who let Rodd proctologise you. Surely in light of his comments Danny has forgone his riding fee. He earned but a knackery fee. And how.

But History was well served by The One Man Knackery's ride. (Lucky I couldn't organise that horrific toilet fall, eh?) Because if Zipping, a midweeker when in white hot form, had won this Cox Plate it immedialtely became the worst of the modern era.

But Danny's was by no means the worst ride in the race. It was only a year or so back that Glenn Boss was in form as good as any jockey's ever in my memory. But that don't make his ride on the filly in the CP anything but carnage. How, when the leader (a full adult male) is cutting a 1:30 1400, can you get a horse carrying 48kg six lengths off the lead? There was only one place for Glenn Boss to be. Before, during and after the race. One place. He had to slot on the leader's back. Legless mongrels like Savabeel have won the race from there. And handy 3yos have run flattering placings from there for eons.

If he places her on the leader's back she runs at worst second. (Okay probably no better than that.) But not third. Glenn Boss? Dodgem Car bandit.

Maldivian was a merciful result. A second rate galloper who was head and shoulders above the others. And lengths ahead.

Sea Battle. There are two Sea Battles. The one that sits up second or third, or even leads, is a good Saturday handicapper capable of running placings in weakish group handicaps. As he did in the Toorak. But the real Sea Battle, prior to the Waterford, we'd only seen once. He sits back and joins in with a withering and sustained burst. That horse is a group horse as he showed with his demolition on Saturday. There is little doubt in my mind that if he'd been ridden as Alamosa was in the Toorak he'd have won it.

Sea Battle is a Two-face. One way he's ugly and the other he's mighty stylish. And this type is pretty rare. But my Sea Battle observations apply equally to Baughurst. Another Two-face. Ridden close on the speed he barely gets 2000m. A good Saturday handicapper etc. But as we saw when he demolished them a fortnight ago, if ridden back he has a powerful finish.

Jamie Mott slaughtered Baughurst in the MV Cup. Chanceless after 200m. He strolled to the front at the 150 and promptly died in the arse, beaten by the notorious mongrel Gallopin. Had Mott slotted back in the field, his horse, a little query at a mile and a half, would have won easily IMO, would have kicked the living daylights out of Gallopin. The result was more about the difference in class between Winks and Mott than Baughurst and Gallopin.

That said I still have a tiny doubt about Baughurst at the staying journeys. But while Mott is destroying his chances I can't be sure. Watch for the real Baughurst (the second face) before making up your mind. Id' spec him in the MC in a heartbeat if I knew he'd be ridden right.

Lucky maggot was too good in the sprint. Quite an indictment of those behind. But he's always been a dishonest galloper and maybe he's learned to race. I doubt it- he's just not much good. But you've got to be careful with this type. When they put it all together they can go right on. Still, if you lead at the Valley over the sprint and can't win they shoot you. Or they should. Lucky for this maggot I never have.

Just to leave you on a positive note - Crabs was scratched. What a weekend.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Agree re Sea Battle. Looks outstanding when ridden back. Will follow with interest.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Good Article on the greatest jockey ever today !

Pity Miles above was not in the Derby, would have been a memorable 2000th win.
