The Official "RFC Coaching Position" Discussion Thread

Just my thoughts on him as a player compared to Hardwick & Richo as players. Admittedly, it's not the correct way to assess him as a coach though.

What , that he was a better player? best & fairest, dual all australian, 3rd in brownlow.

Maybe his coaching record of three flags at two different clubs in 5 years concerns you.

Perhaps being picked by Blight as his assistant at St kilda concerns you

or maybe being the offensive coash for a team that won 46 out of about 48 concerns you.

I'd rest very comfortably if Hinkley was our pick.

Geez, I reckon I might be a little disappointed if he's not named coach when you put it like that.

Good post.

Very hard to split Hardwick, Hinkley and Richardson from the outside looking in. It's going to be fascinating to see who get's the job, all three excite me for different reasons so I'll be very happy with the decision as long as they don't have a cheese sandwich at the press conference to announce the coach.

I don't believe for one minute we have made a decision yet and I definitely don't believe Richardson has handed in his resignation to Essendon. They would leak that in 1.8 seconds.

I agree DD, I think that we would be checking references and doing our due diligence and that is all, the board will make the decision after the final two candidates present to the board so all the speculation is just that speculation. I expect we will know who the final two are today or tomorrow, because they will need time to schedule in the meetings.

I agree, Hardwick probably my least preferred, but only because dont know enough about his smarts and man management. He would rattle the cages though! In the end we will all find out in time. Looks like a tough decision for the panel/board. Re the Richardson resignation my source was adament (and animated) - maybe its being held in escrow! ;D

What assistant coaches would each of these prospects want to bring with them? Any ideas? In the end we are hiring the whole package.

Fair enough lamb, as I said I can't swallow it myself, but going down the hypothetical path...

Richardson was/is contracted to Essendon I believe for at least next year also, there is no way he would leave Essendon for another assistant role. Which indicates he has our role (since it is the only one on offer right now).

Our process would be very farcical if we let Hinkley go through another interview tomorrow night, knowing we have given the job to someone already and Richardson would know it and it would get out, eventually. I just can't swallow it, even trying my utmost.

Even if we have given Richardson a wink and nod and said he is in the box seat, it would be really stupid of him (and he's a intelligent guy) to resign because he "had a positive vibe". He doesn't need to, essendon know he is interviewing with us, he has a contract with them. It doesn't matter when it is announced or if he gets the job when he resigns. He is risking his reputation and unemployment prematurely quitting and I have no doubt Essendon would be pissed as they would believe Richmond's process is not over or farcical and they would release it.

Look at North, if the jungle drums are true, Hardwick had that job and Scott blew them away in the last interview. Similarly, Hinkley is to be interviewed tomorrow night and could pip everyone at the post even if he was coming from behind. Just like Scott reportedly did and Knights and Lyon before them.

Could Hinkley bring Balme for a head of football/ DoC role?

It's probably the most likely scenario that has been raised with Balme's name in it, but I am not sure Balme would fit in with Cameron or if his speciality/personality would clash with Cameron's too much. Two bull's in the paddock and all that. In a ideal scenario it would be great if he wanted to come and we could have a role for him.

However people who think Balme would come in and replace Cameron are kidding themselves, Cameron isn't going anywhere just now.

I agree with you. My source was adamant but probably TT12 on an internet forum! :)

Hinkley and Hardwick were the 2 most impressive candidates in Stage 1. These 2 are fighting it out in stage 2.

This has been confirmed by the journo with the best connections into Richmond Greg Denham. He was on the money all through the Wallace saga often in contrast to Snatchy, Caro and ShiteMike.

Hardwick was not appointed at North because he has wanted the Richmond job from the start.

For what it is worth my money is on Hinkley. The fact that Thompson is talking about keeping him in the media I think means someone has been told.

Or has Thompson come out on the front foot backing up his mate's credentials because he has not got the job??? Its going to be an interesting end to this!

This bloke doesn't think much of Hardwick ;)
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=618924

for those of us without a Bigfooty registration, what did he say?

"This is the man whose great plan to rebuild Essendon was to do pretty the exact opposite of what Knights has done with reasonable success.

A man who was leading the race to coach North until giving an interview so appalling he immediately shut himself out of contention.

A man who struggles to use a computer. Who's presentations are now the laughing stock of football circles."

Seems to be the crux of it.

I personally think it is Hinkley's job to lose.

Although there would only be a very small handful of men who would know this, and I am certainly not one of them.

As Smoking Aces said, it will be an interesting end to this.
