The least tactical sub in history

The decision to sub Miller wasn't a bad call. The decision to sub anyone for Ralphsmith was a woeful decision. If we have Sonsie or Dow as sub we very likely win that game.

No we wouldn't. The reason we lost the 4th quarter like we did was because he were killed in the air throughout that quarter. He made a call to try and correct up where we were being killed in the air in the ruck (but were good in the air forward and back), but that decision led to us to continue to be killed in the air in the ruck, but also be killed in the air forward and back. JVR was ultimately the match winner in the 4th quarter and was allowed to do that due to the decision to take a tall out of the game. Neither of Sonsie or Dow would have changed that scenario.

I'm far from a Hugo fan (IMO is not up to AFL level and most likely never will be) but can't blame him for last night. Not his fault he gets selected when he isn't up to it.

I believe our poor kicking skills once again cost us the game; especially after half time. We weren't too bad in the first half but once again we just leave too many goals on the table. Should have been 4 goals up at half time; missed some opportunities late in the half and Melbourne took theirs; we let them back into the game. But it was the second half where our kicking really killed us. Dusty missed everything all night (except one when the game was over) and his 3rd quarter dribble kick miss was terrible. Samson and MRJ missed sitters as well. Should have had a 4 goal lead at 3/4 time and it is a different game. Instead Melbourne has all the momentum and a deficit of only 2 points. Then again in the last quarter we miss easy shots at goal. Miller, Ryan and Baker and one other I can't recall who. Melbourne take their chances and there is the game.

Fair to say we blew it again. Our terrible kicking skills and composure have cost us all season so far and it happened again last night. For that matter both issues were a major factor in us not advancing further last year as well. It is very frustrating watching us butcher the basic element of the game and continuing to lose because of it.

Game lost due to poor kicking. Not acceptable from professionals

Hard to criticise Jack too much, but he missed at least 1 (I think possibly 2) corridor goals aswell. Could have kicked 6.0.

This has got to be up there as one of the funniest posts of all time- Dow would have won us the game??

If Lever hadn’t breached the protected zone, Cumbo would have missed a set shot, too.

Hardwick has been and continues to be the worst game day coach in the AFL.

His strong suit of keeping everybody happy and enjoying their football in a holistic way with a talented team of assistants around him and a healthy list is now found wanting without the above.

Tonight required a level of tactical coaching that has often eluded Hardwick.

He will walk at the end of the season and I hope he has no say in the selection of a new Tiger coach.
This is up there with the Hall of Shame worst posts.
He may leave at the end of the year, who knows?
But the rest is post game dummy spit drivel.

Its pretty funny I reckon. :))
Funny in one of those ways where you see a Dad get smacked in the cods by his three year old son, with a cricket bat.
You laugh, grimace and shake your head at the same time.

I reckon the writing was in the wall in the 3rd- the Dees started to control the stoppages and have the better of play. If we took our chances and were 4 goals up, we probably would have kept the set up we had, and tried to hang on, but we weren't. The Dees were always going to keep coming. Hardwick knew we needed to do something different, so we went for speed. Yes, Van Rooyen kicked a few goals, yes Ralphsmith made some mistakes, but the likelihood of the same structure winning us the game was low, IMO.

Great post Brodders. The wave was coming. Anyone looking from the shore could see it. There were posts in game day saying it.

Does this thread also relate to Goodwin - he was that close to subbing van Rooyen.

Hardwick had to try and mix it up because from late in the second, the dees had the momentum. It didn’t work. A seasoned team was always going to challenge - blame fitness, blame shots on goal, blame our struggle to kick goals from outside 45, blame out in experience but shooting Hardwick, a 3 time tiger premiership coach is a bit weak, we are better than that.

Look, you can see the logic of more run, but, and I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, the logic of replacing a tall with a smaller player against a team with good talls is questionable. I would have favoured replacing a running player not having an impact with our sub who is a running player, it just makes more sense to me. I was at the game so didn't see who was subbed off. Yes, Miller was not great, but I think he was better than a lot here are saying, at least he could provide some height and compete in the air.

I think the other thing people are forgetting is that Melbourne are contenders with a list at a far more favourable age to ours. We have a mix of ageing heroes and young players learning the game at AFL level, they are in the zone of good players and age profile to be winning flags. We are declining and attempting to rebuild on the run, fill in gaps and the like. Melbourne have the list now to contend. A team like Melbourne will always come back against a team like Richmond, we were doing the same thing a few years ago.

Yes Jack missed two easy goals; definitely should have kicked both and had 6.0. That said he still kicked 4 and kicked them when we needed them. Our BOG for mine.

They were certainly coming, however by removing the tall we made it far easier than it should have been for them. They were always likely to be too tall for us and 1 running player wasn't going to sort any issues out, we needed to control the game and by giving up the air we gave up any opportunity to do that.

Hardwick did need to do something to stop the rut in th ruck, but he played the wrong card. I think if he was asked today if he'd play that card again, he'd probably say no. Miller could and should have been moved back, and Balta into the ruck.

Dimma had a bit of a mare though in the final quarter after that, as we were chasing he then more magnets around and put the 2 worst kicks in our team behind the ball and both (Hugo and Mansell) were exposed and either coughed up goals, or didn't hit targets going inside 50. The kick from Mansell into the pocket (can't remember now who it was) was a 25m kick into space, should be the easiest kick in footy and he missed him by a mile.
