The least tactical sub in history

Lets face it the sub could reasonably have been any one of about 6 players. The travesty is that our sub was worse than all of those options.

Dimma makes too many basic selection mistakes for a senior coach.

Ross is slow and can't hit the side of barn with his kicking which is why he isn't playing. Dow must have rizzed one of Dimma's daughters. Don't understand why he gets such *smile* treatment.

Let’s see they have 2 rucks Well just sub off Miller so their rucks can run rampant Instead of taking off a slow player Cotch or Mansell who should be forced to pay to watch the game from the stands
Well go short in the backline by usingBalta in the ruck so their talls can take advantage and take marks and kick a winning score
Put Bakes forward and let Kosi get some of the ball
Youd think Goodwin took over at 3/4 time

Anyway you look at it, that was a shithow of epic proportions. Literally gifted the game to the Dees

Miller was an unmitigated disaster. He has been pathetic the last 2 weeks. Dropped marks, missed goals and a generally hopeless effort when rucking. He has had a massive opportunity the last 2 weeks and given nothing. No intensity, no presence. He won’t get dropped as we do not have a replacement but he has been insipid.

Ross hit the barn again and again and again yesterday.
Did you see his career disposal efficiency that someone put up here the other day?

Just posted similar to this in the game day thread. As soon as the sub you made, you saw the game swing. Gawn and Grundy had already swung the pendulum a little in the 3rd by changing their ruck strategy particularly on Samson, using their bodies way more to knock his weaker body out of the way and it was working, so I could see some of the idea to swing Balta into the ruck as Miller had given us very little, but Miller should have been pushed back if that was the case not subbed out. I text my friend at 3 quarter time asking who of MRJ or Cotch gets subbed off and was shocked when I saw it was Miller.

Once he was off and our entire structure was change, they destroyed us in the air. When we had no tall forward support for Jack, Lever and May did their thing double teaming him and he was constantly facing a 2 on 1 of probably the best tandem 2 in the league. At the other end, taking that tall our exposed Young (who was doing well up until 3QT) as they had a tall forward line.

Then we made it worse by playing 2 of the worse kicks in our side (Hugo and Mansell) behind the ball when we swung Bakes forward.

Was a shocker of a sub decision. It may not have cost us the game, we may have lost anyway, but geez it made it almost impossible for us to win from that point onwards.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Every time Miller went into the ruck we lost all momentum. We had zero midfield ascendancy when he went in there. He can’t play forward either.

So I can definitely see why Hardwick made sub.

Let’s not forget Miller had a great chance to kicked start the last quarter. But if you can’t execute a routine shot by on goal then why are you even in the team.

I doubt anyone is debating that Miller was poor and I said to my daughter at the game, when he took the shot at goal that thats why he will not make it as a forward, but why wasn't he swung back to defence to release Balta to the ruck? It was an awful decision. Miller has performed well as a key back in the past and its probably his go, and maybe we should be selecting Balta and Ryan as that forward combo until we have either Nank or Soldo back, but Miller shouldn't have been subbed, it completely destroyed our forward and defensive structures and we paid the price massively for that.

Miller was horrendous - just offering nothing - so I can see why he did it. But structurally, he stuffed us up completely, something he sort of admitted in the press conference.

Why Ralphsmith was the sub is anyone’s guess. We didn’t gain anything by bringing him on.

But this sort of stuff has been going on for a long time now with Hooch.

It made sense for Miller to go back but if only it wasn’t Miller.

Once either Nank or Soldo are ready I don’t think we will see Miller again in the seniors.

Yeah I agree. I think we'll see a lot of Ryan for the rest of the year though, along with 1 of Nank or Soldo once they are back fit, but we really have no options. We saw tonight what happens when we take another tall out of the team, our structures just fall about and we were destroyed in the air. I think Miller has his place in the team for the time being, but you are right, once they are back it will be tough for him to break back in, especially if Bauer keeps doing well in defence. Maybe he gets his chance in the coming weeks with Balta moving to the ruck and we play Bauer in defence, but we couldn't do that against really tall forwards as we'd be a bit undersized down back.

Miller wasn't good, but we made the worse decision of the 2 in subbing him off. If we needed to move the magnets around, the obvious one was swap Balta and Miller, but we then subbed Miller off, threw Mansell back, brought Hugo on, so we had too many smalls back so moved Bakes forward, it was a collective unmitigated disaster of a decision.

Good points Posh.

Miller is a key back or a bust.

I am glad you mentioned Bauer. I would have him come in this week and get Balta in the ruck.

I think they'll be worried about King personally and that we'll be too small up against him so I suspect we will see the same setup, Balta back and we'll give the Miller / Ryan combo another crack, but another game like Sunday for Bauer and I could see him debut against the Eagles, who have a smaller forward line. Probably give Young first crack at Allen and Grimes and Bauer could pick up Waterman and Darling.
