The Finals thread

Not much love for Burgoyne so far.

I thought he was terrific last night. Made a couple of mistakes towards the end of the game but I think that was purely due to him being fatigued.

He played that link role between half back and midfield perfectly but at the same time stopped plenty of attacks from Collingwood.

He is very smart player who never goes to ground.

I didn't start watching until about halfway through the third quarter, so I have no idea what put Hawthorn 17 points up in the first place, so I won't make any comment on that. However, from what I did watch, I thought three things brought Hawthorn undone in the last.

1. Most of their forward thrusts ended up with either Rioli or Puopolo. Tarrant held Buddy well, the other two led to the pocket most of the time allowing Collingwood to clear with ease. Bruest would have been handy but they really needed another key forward to straighten them up. Surprisingly, they made the same rookie mistake against Collingwood that teams have been making for two years. Maxwell may look like a goose but if you don't man him up he will repel your attack every time. Geelong won't make this simple mistake.

2. Travis Cloke gave Josh Gibson a football lesson. Holding the World record for third man up spoils is great but when the chips are down you have to beat your opponent. Gibson is useless at this.

3. They gave up two goals from boundary throw-ins in the forward pocket. The third best team in the AFL and they were setting up at these stoppages like a bottom team, allowing Swan and Ball a direct path into goal. Twice.

They need to do a bit of thinking if they are to take another step.

Thought he was the best of the highly skilled players, certainly overshadowed guys like Thomas, Davis and Rioli.

Hawks were unlucky, weren't they. Definitely the better team on the night.

If the had a fit Roughead, they'd win the flag.

It's a shame Lewis doesn't play for Richmond.

I thought exactly that when watching the game.

I placed a few of our players in that game and saw a 100 point belting from either side to us. I saw Cotchin, Martin, Deledio, Riewoldt, Vickery making a name for themselves though.

Barnzy summed it up. To win a flag you need to have guys who make good decisions under pressure, or less guys that make bad decisions under pressure.

I won't name names for fear I am unfairly targetting some players but WE ALL know who they are.

Actually I though the opposite Bobby and how close we are to competing.

A lot on both sides went missing or stuffed up - for the Hawks Bateman was truly horrible, Schoenemakers and Guerra terrible and Whitecross, Smith, Shields all went missing or were largely ineffective.

For Pies Brown is cooked, Jolly struggled. Davis panicking and choking as usual this time in the back half. Krakour and Wellingham invisible and a lot of their better players really rusty eg Thomas and Shaw.

Clearly your bottom six can lose it for you but I am assuming your Mcguanes and Grahams wont be part of our finals side next year.

Each teams momentum last night revolved around their key players. Swan, Cloke, Ball for Pies. Lewis, Hodge Mitchell, Cyril and Buddy for Hawks.

Our top 6 to 8 will be able to match or better most teams in the years to come and I think we will be more than compettive in finals next year.

BTW Puoplo just a poor man's Kingy. Very effective in dismantling Neon last night. Just lacked Jakey's oomph, singlemindedness and finishing skills ;D

Whilst we carry certain players mate, we won't be able to handle that intense pressure.

As I said I think with our top talent, we are not too far away and I can't wait to see those guys in the heat of battle, they will make themselves in those games, but I fear we have some of the leagues worst decision makers in the business. Under that intensity it would be comical to watch some of those players.

Ditto.

I think it was a great game, so intense I loved every minute of it. What the sport is all about.

Cannot wait till we are there, hopefully it's not too long but we have to be more creative.

That's the level, who of our players could cope?
Agreed. Was a great game of CONTESTED football.
Reminded me of our grat clashes with the Blues in the late 60,s and 70,s.

- To add one thing more to that. Clarkson coached his arse off tonight. Him & his assistants gace his team every chance of rolling Collingwood.

He is a very good coach Clarkson. Second only to Malthouse IMO and not far behind him at all. Hawthorn was pitiful when he took them over, with only a 2 year contract, at the same time Wallet took over RFC with an unconditional 5 year contract. Wallace should be embarrassed by how Clarkson outperformed him.

LOL at those media hacks like Jon Ralph who think Lyon is a better coach than Clarkson.

They weren't unlucky. They threw it away with stupid mistakes by players like Bateman and Schoenmakers. No excuses; they should have won and only have themselves to blame.

very happy with last nights result. hawthorn choking they way they did could not have happened to a better team. hopefully this will scar them and they'll drop back down in 2012.

sidenote: suck sh!t jeff.

We're arguing in circles but for the record I expect to see some of our worst decision makers to be phased out sooner rather than later. Our top 6 -10 will be as good or better than most and most people overrate the bottom 6 of most top clubs.

Only Geelong bats real deep and even then there are still question marls over a Hawkins, West & Byrnes. Hawks had 3 or 4 spuds out there. Blues had about 7. West Coast actually bat fairly deep but they are still young.

I know I'd be more comfortable going a final with Grimes and Rance as my young backs rather than Schoenemahers and Murphy.

And I'd be happy going into a final with Vickery and Jack as my key forwards rather than Thornton and O Hailpen or Waite.

An I'm looking forward to Cotch, Dusty, Foley, Conca and Deledio taking on the good midfields the top 5 teams have.

But you are right - getting the support cast right is where the premierships come from!

Tom Hawkins gets one very simple instruction next week....jump into Maxwell's back hard 3 times in the first Q. Game just about over.

That’a good point. Spot on. The bottom six of a side win flags.

Still dirty on last night. Geez I hate Collingwood, but it was a great game of football.

The big men stood tall for Collingwood...Cloke and Joe Dawes were always a threat, whilst Buddy was the only dangerous tall forward up the other end.

The hawks will be kicking themselves, should have won.

And unlike many, I can't see the filth getting pantsed next week...although I hope to god they do
