The Finals thread

FYI his stats line up similarly to Nahas - would you say Nahas is a bludger?

This here says it all. Ignoring the fact Nahas stats are slightly better (3 more disposals a game, more marks, 2 less goals overall, double the tackles a game) what does it say about Varcoe if a guy like Nahas has output similar or better than him? Varcoe is twice the talent of Nahas and has played 100 games to Nahas 55. To me this says one works much harder than the other.

You simply refuse to conced you are wrong about this guy - wish we had some disappointing players like him.

I've never said he's a bad player. Just a disappointing one. Varcoe works hard in certain plays and runs and links up when Geelong get the ball on the turnover. He is very silky and skilful. These flashes of brilliance are enough to sway people but there should be more substance there. He has never worked hard enough to be a 4 quarter player. He will show up for 1, 2 or 3 quarters. Imagine how good he could be if he did that for 4 quarters every week. This is what the better players do. He's been in the system long enough. As much as these sort of plays you mention must excite Geelong fans - they must as equally frustrate them in that he should be doing it more.

The comparison to Nahas was work ethic - no one could say Nahas did not run hard etc. I'd bet Nahas played more midfield than Varcoe too. And Nahas plays for the tigers, not too many midfield stars to compete with for the ball.

You are ignoring his position (how many HFF's have big stats), his role in the side and the fact there are about 7-8 guys in front of him in that side who are playmakers. Reckon Varcoe will continue to improve and he will get more midfield time now their midfield group is retiring/getting older.

We will see. I don't reckon he gets much better than he is now and can't ever see him racking up big stats. Especially with Geelong likely to decline over the next 2-3 years and lose some senior bodies that dish the pill out to the likes of Varcoe - Ling, Corey, Chapman, etc.

FWIW, I'd take Varcoe in our side in a heartbeat. Would be a massive upgrade on many.

Agree on this Jimmy!! Do you reckon he would get a game in front of White though?

Me too . You don't build sides around players like Varcoe but they are invaluable to really good teams . He has an x factor , disappears and then kicks a couple of quick goals . In a really tight game those types of players can tip the balance .
Varcoe has the raw skill to be a lot better for sure but he is the Mark Waugh of AFL football .

The major area he can improve ILO is when/where to run to get involved more. That has nothing to do with how hard you work.

And his finishing skills have been poor for the most part, this has been my knock on him throughout his career. The GF was hopefully a turning point because he did his job superbly.

Leysy's just watchin the GF replay.

Was Varcoe's goal in the last when he ran the length of the ground to get involved in the play 4 times one of the goals of the year or what.

Amazing amazing goal.

On 2nd thoughts, yes it was goal of the year for leysy.

Just caught that from a replay of OTC where it was highlighted.
Gut running at it's best. Remarkable goal.

He's no Morton though.

I generally agree. He promises so much but goes missing far too much at times. I am not sure it's that he doesn't work hard enough, I tend to agree with Leysey that maybe he's not a natural at knowing where to position himself at times. That was an unbelievable goal though.

Credit to Varcoe for his GF performance - potential liability but did his job. Reckon it says something about how far off the boil Collingwood were. Doubt Hawthorn would've allowed it to happen.
