Talking Politics

I've studied this for a long time. There is no way the Age, for example, is a left wing newspaper. That is simply ridiculous.

Well, you don't study enough....looking at The Age webpage now (it's 11:09pm, Friday 12th October).

The Age
Top story is "Al Gore wins Nobel prize"
4th story down: "Haneef investigation 'flawed'"
Under 'National': "PMs reconciliation re-think"
Under 'National': "Abbot given moral lessons"
Under 'National': "Bailleu acquires stake in Citylink"
Under 'National': "States mistrust Howard history plan"
Under "Opinion": "Demonising the weakest" (story on the Libs 'attacking' refugees)
Editorial: "Mr Howard, too little, too late"
Michelle Grattan: "Short-term incumbent or the mystery package"
Letters: "Your mess, you fix it, Kevin Andrews"
Ben Saul and Anish Bhasin (this editorial bags Rudd's stance on the death-penalty)

Out of all the political headlines on "The Age"'s main page, only ONE was leaning against Rudd (the last one by Ben Saul and Abish Bhasin).
All the others were negative stories against the Libs.

Now to be fair, I'll go to the Herald Sun.....time is 11:22pm, Friday 12th October.

Herald-Sun
Main story: Gore awarded Nobel Peace Prize
Breaking news: Rudd congratulates Gore for Nobel win
All these under 'National':
* Poll bets grow on election pitch (story on how important the election pitchs will be important)
* Rudd's reaction: Howard's gone stale
* Referendum plan: PM's push for Aboriginal reconciliation
* Indigenous leaders: PM should still say 'Sorry'
* Closing in: Poll call is imminent
* Jobs boom: Interest rates threat

And thats it for the Herald Sun main page.

You can't tell me Sixpack, after looking at both papers, that The Age isn't a lefty rag.
It might not be extremist left, like the Greens...but it definitely is "anti Libs" and "anti Government".

just out of interest how many times has the age in its pre election editorial ,encouraged people to vote ALP.I wouldnt think too many times .Whereas the herald Sun is quite open in its pro conservative stance.I also think a balance is required ,where if you have a conservative newspaper you also need one that leans to the left.Ideally all media should be non biased and report each story on its merits.

Then in a couple of years when the ALP has screwed our economy once again, we'll be voting the Libs back in, and away we go again... :hihi

Don't be cheeky Liv. Everyone is aware that sooner or later the US consumer boom will slow, which will impact upon the monster factory machine that is China, and then when they stop begging for our steel and coal our economy will be b&^%-slapped, and there is nothing either party can do about it. Furthermore, this may happen regardless of the USA if the Chinese Government cannot control its current high inflation and growing bad debt problems (Govt is spending billions funding banks bad loans to avoid them collapsing).

The sooner the illusion that our economy is NOT 90% dependant upon the world economy the better. Like it or not Bush and Hu have more influence on your economic position than does any politician of any persuasion in this country.

looks like the wait is over the election will be called early next week.apparently channel 9 has taken delivery of liberal party ads that will have subtitles.i.e dates inserted over the weekend.bout bloody time the sooner this os over the better i.m.h.o

You and I are opposite in political views, but I couldn't agree more. I'm sick of this faux election campaign that has been on for a year now. The only thing that makes me ::) though is having to watch 5-7 weeks of biased and out of whack political ads (from both sides). It still stuns me that people are idiotic enough to have their vote influenced by that rubbish, and the bombardment makes me scared to turn on the TV :(

Livers, you can bring in all the examples you like, it's not a 'lefty rag.'

Maybe once it was a bit to the left of centre but not any more.

And Fairfax is a huge company. They have no real interest in pushing a left wing agenda. like many Australian companies they donate to the libs and the ALP.

You probably have this perception as the Age seems a bit more small 'L' liberal than the Herald Sun. But thats as much to do with the HUn as it is the AGE.

And i guess they both have their target audiences.

nb. What makes u think a story about Al Gore is left wing? Your political analysis is off the mark, Livers.

Are there any left wing politicians in positions of power in the USA?

I think the concept of left and right has pretty much disappeared in the American mainstream political arena, more so than even here.

I know I'm drawing a long bow here, but i would venture that any politician in the west who espouses left wing politics today is almost unelectable.I cant think of one western democracy in which you could say a true left winger is in power.maybe italy in a pinch

Heard a whisper from inside the bowls of the Liberal Party - Mr Howard will be visiting the acting GG today to start the election rolling.

Funny it is usually done on a Sunday (tomorrow).

No more taxpayer funded Liberal Party ads - however they will be replaced by other nausiating political party ads - thank the good Lord it only comes around once every 3 years. (Fancy complaining about living in a democracy as good as ours - it could be worse - like living in some countries in Africa or the Middle East hey?)

Livers, how does this article confirm, deny or confuse your left/right labels?

You're right Barty..."The Age" isn't pro-Rudd as such, it's anti-Government/anti-Libs.
If you keep hearing/reading negative press about one side, it is a natural progession to lean towards the other side.

Tiger74,
It looks like you're getting your excuses ready for when Ruddy stuffs it all up... ;)

I agree also....but there has been a reason behind it all.
1. Howard doesn't want to give in to Rudd/Gillard the satisfaction. These two have been constantly trying to goad him into calling the election. Howard is the PM and he will call it when he is ready to call it.
2. The longer it drags out, and the more Rudd keeps agreeing with Howard on everything, the more he looks like a tool who can't standby the ALPs "true" policies....and to me...that is someone who can't take responsibility, and shouldn't be our national leader.
The scary thing is, he probably will be... :-\

if Rudd agrees with everything that Howard says, and u back Howard, whats yr problem with Rudd winning? More of the same will most likely follow.

No, the same won't follow...because Rudd is a wolf in sheeps clothing, Sixpack.
People voting for Rudd because of his "same policies as the Libs" are being played for fools....because as soon as Rudd gets in, then we'll get the true ALP policies shoved down our throats.
Mr. McClelland gave us a small insight into it the other day, and we saw Rudd's reaction to that, didn't we....."Wait until after we win the election!" Rudd would have said to him..."We're nearly there, don't blow it now by saying what we're going to do...stick to the plan!" :hihi

Rudd is a filthy rich politician and his wife is a multi-millionaire. Why are they going to bother rocking the boat. They will serve their own interests just like most of our pollies and leaders have always done.

I agree....not denyting that.
Just saying that he will get there doing it the "ALP way", not the Lib-way he is portraying, that's all.

By the way, who are you voting for....you didn't answer that question the other day?
