Tackling

Dont know if it's been mentioned but Deledio has'nt laid a tackle in the last 2 weeks. I hope this trend doesn't continue.

Brett is leading our disposals, kicks, handballs, rebound 50s and marks. Maybe he doesn't need to tackle as much cos he's the one with the ball.

Not having a go at you Rosy but it's interesting how we use the word 'leading' when talking about the number of disposals a player gets, as if it's a race.

We are quick to judge someone who doesn't get many touches and call for them to be dropped or delisted. If I was an AFL player, concerned primarily about keeping my spot in the team, I wonder if I would tackle, shepherd or block, when I could potentially get a cheap handball instead and help secure myself another contract.

I wonder if Geelong and Collongwood players think about gathering possessions as much as we do...

72 tackles yesterday. :)

Hardwick is changing the work ethic of this side no doubt.

Not doubting you, but I must say that I think the AFL tackle counts are being inflated by some sort of new interpretation of what actually constitutes a tackle. Some of the tackle counts by sides recently have been nigh on unbelieveable. I saw one team recently laid nearly 100 in a game.

Tackling the Hawks was great I thought. Lids was busy linking through the backline and had a good game, noticed his no tackles stat but not of concern given his role

I thought lids was good.

however his low tackle count week in week out worries me. others like him Hodge, Enright....... plenty more who play there role still get their share of tackles.

I still question whether he works as hard defensively.

have you got a similar stat for tackles against over the last few years?I think it would be very insightful...

Game structure has changed immensly over the last few years. There's usually twenty plus players surrounding the ball area and it's tacklemania while the ball bounces from player to player like a demented pinball machine.

Not that long ago that 250 possessions in a game was virtual ownership of the footy, nowadays 400 is passed regularly and player interchanges are nearing 150 a match.
The numbers are so high the stats are almost irrelevant when assessing a players contribution. Young Nic Nat is a classic example, early in the season he was tearing large holes in games with only a handfull of possessions because each of his touches and actions forced a result rather than sides racking up multiple chains of possession up and down the ground often without scoring anything more than a stat.

the most needless quote Ive ever seen. The game has changed so much since 1987. Of course there are more tackles today. Everyone seems to be in the same position, as soon as you get the ball you are tackled unless you have blistering speed or elite skills to pierce a gap. look at 1995, We finished 3rd that year, but going by this tally, we were no good because our tackle count wasnt high enough...
You cant compare different eras of footy anymore. Its changed too much

Its an interesting question squire. I would love to see our side do more of the selfless acts that seem abundant in better sides (shepherds, blocks....gut-running into space) but I can forgive Lids and a couple of the other classy players in our side on this one because these are the guys we want to be disposing of the footy. All the same though it is great for morale when these guys take one for the team - Cameron Ling is a prime example at Geelong. Could be a star in his own right in most sides but often plays a tagging role and uses his bulk and nouse to ensure the Abletts Bartels and Chappys have time and space to work.

Is tackling important? I rest my case:-
