Sydney Stack

Has there been a player led intervention with SS? Everyone in a circle let him have it kind of stuff?

We’re not a one-size-fits-all football club. We can accommodate different standards for people from different backgrounds... if they’re committed.

We gave Rance extended breaks. He was committed. We do make special allowances.

But the question to me now is whether Stack can perform at AFL level moving forward.

The off-field behaviour alone wouldn’t be too bad if it was just an off-field issue, but unfortunately it’s something that also affects his ability to train and play H&A matches.

That crosses the line from social work issue to performance issue.

We shouldn’t cut him purely for club-value reasons IMO, as we took him in knowing he’d take time. We knew what we were getting. It’s like recruiting a non-footballer ruck prospect and not giving him enough time to learn how to kick.

He has shown something. He did respond well to structure and routine within the week-to-week grind. He can do it, when fit, during the season.

But outside that (e.g, injured ankle, off season, in WA, when injured in the hub and not playing ones) he has regressed at every opportunity.

If he wasn’t my favourite first year player in recent memory, this would be a much simpler decision.

At present it appears to be some alcohol, not drugs.
No male role model in his family.
Over compensating bragging behaviour to mask shyness.
We have the structures to help him. Hardwick lost his marriage and had to be told by Bennie Gale to sort himself out.
So a young man coming from a long way back needs some help.
Read about how many people the Tigers had around Marlion when he had to go home for a funeral.

Depends. Do other players want him to stay?
the rumour is certain players at the club are sick of him.
If that is true, move him on.
rather keep the team happy then 1 player happy.

That would be a dilemma for sure, 7
I'm not across that stuff, but if the overall playing list (particularly the leaders) and the coach feel it best to move him on, then the Club will find itself in a bit of a quandry.
Not sure RFC would feel it appropriate to just cut him loose.
I'm not convinced, yet, that Stack is past the redeemable point. I might have my head in the sand.
If he is given his one last chance, then he will have to show absolute faith to the cause and be a shining example of sincerity in his efforts, his training, his relationships and his character. One more miss-step and he will be gone
It's quite probable that Stack has a myriad of issues going on his life and in his head, but only he can deal with that if he wishes to seek a better path for his future.
It's good for the soul to be humble for extended periods of time.

Thats fine. Not all players get along.
But i never read about either one of those guys breaking curfew and going outside the team rules.

remember that time Rance ran off with the Jehovahs Witnesses?

and we never saw him again.

No way would our Stackman pull that *smile*.

Just hypothesising. May not be perceived in the best light if we cast a young Aboriginal lad adrift when he's at a low ebb while receiving a $15m gift of public money for the William Cooper Centre.

His manager said he's doing it very tough in lockup, so it's possible the club doesn't want to make a call while he's emotionally wrought.

I think we would not announce anything until he's out and with family again, that's a duty of care issue and better for PR as well.

It would have nothing to do with funding for PRO though.

The funeral was 14 weeks ago
Time to move on

Stacks manager and AAP don't seem to think so.

I'd want to be pretty sure about publicly accusing someone of lying about their grandads funeral.

Black Fellas often put their dead on ice for long periods, so extended family can gather for the sorry business.

If you are wrong about this,

It would be an absolute disgrace

I reckon keep Stack.
Draw the line very clearly in the sand, one that can be seen from the clouds.
Give him all the support, structure and love, yet make it abundantly clear to him that crossing that line again with irresponsible behaviour indicates to all and sundry that he would prefer to be elsewhere than playing footy at RFC.
Ongoing indiscretions, poor behaviour and unprofessional attitudes tend to sap the energy and spirit out of colleagues who are striving for team-oriented goals and achievements.
I wish Stack well in his endeavours. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that in a year or two we will again be lauding some of his onfield mastery.
He could be gunnish sort of player, but that's in his hands if he wants it badly enough.
In the meantime, there's plenty of work and soul-searching ahead of him if he is to break out of and away from the demons that possibly grip him.
LETS ALL DO OUR BIT AND EMAIL THE CLUB, SUPPORT HIM, KEEP HIM, LET RICHMOND BENEFIT FROM HIS ABILITY.

The No DH policy needs to adhered to in this case. Good cultures require commitment to the cause both ways............he should and will be moved on.

Think he might be gone .Sad so much potential and he is throwing it away ...well extra space on the list for one of the kids training with us ..who really wants it ..

Is he now going to miss the funeral? Did he even go to Perth for the funeral? Was he there on compassionate grounds instead? Did his grandfather pass away prior to Stack being in Perth earlier this month? Did he get caught out by the stopover in Adelaide that required him to quarantine? Lot of nebulosity about the circumstances.

If he still wants to play footy, hope there's enough room in his cell for push-ups.

There seems to be some very mixed messages.
Kevin Stack was buried on the 9th October in Northam. Don't know if Sydney was there for the actual funeral.
Maybe there was some addition ceremony that he was required to be at last week?
Whatever the case he should not have been out and about and on the grog in Perth

Actual funeral was 9th October.
There may have been some traditional ceremony he needed to be in Northam for last week.

Tigers providing 'behind the scenes support' to imprisoned Stack (paywalled)

Daniel Cherny
The Age
December 22, 2020

The manager of imprisoned Richmond player Sydney Stack says the Tigers have been privately supporting the troubled West Australian defender as he faces the prospect of seeing in the new year behind bars.

Stack, 20, is serving a 14-day quarantine period in an isolation cell at Perth's Hakea Prison over an alleged quarantine breach.

His agent, former West Coast and Brisbane Bears player Paul Peos, said the Tigers had been supportive of Stack despite the player himself acknowledging that his career hung in the balance.

"Can't say much at this point, but I can say Richmond have been providing considerable behind the scenes support for Syd's welfare," Peos said on Tuesday.

The breach came about after Stack returned to WA earlier this month to attend his grandfather's funeral, having started pre-season training with the Tigers at Punt Road earlier in December.

A brief lay-over at Adelaide airport en route to Perth triggered a 14-day quarantine period in the WA country town of Northam. Police allege Stack breached the conditions of his quarantine by staying in the Perth suburb of Belmont. The alleged breach was picked up in the early hours of Saturday morning when police stopped Stack following an alleged brawl in the Perth nightclub district of Northbridge.

The Tigers have opted against making more than a brief generic statement while the matter remains in front of the courts.

Stack had already found himself in hot water earlier in the year when he and Richmond Callum Coleman-Jones were sent home from Queensland, suspended for 10 games and fined following their involvement in a fight outside a Gold Coast strip club in what was a serious breach of AFL hub protocols.

Stack acknowledged to a court on Sunday via an audio hook-up that "my AFL career is on the line with Richmond".

A Perth magistrate has adjourned the matter until January 6 as the prison's quarantine policy prohibits Stack from leaving his cell to speak to the court via a video link during his isolation period.

Peos on Monday said this his client sounded "very distressed".

Former St Kilda assistant coach Jason Mifsud, who like Stack is Indigenous, questioned the decision to put Stack behind bars.

"Challenge the behaviour, support the person. Not sure incarcerating a vulnerable young person is the only solution in a case such as this. Seems unimaginative and unnecessarily punitive," Mifsud wrote on Twitter.

Despite being rated by some clubs as worthy of a first-round selection on talent alone, Stack was overlooked in the 2018 draft amid concerns about his reliability. He became one of the first players to be signed by the pre-season supplemental selection period after training with Richmond following the draft.

Stack worked his way into the Tigers' senior side in 2019 before being hampered by injury and ultimately missing selection for the AFL grand final. He did however win a premiership with Richmond's VFL side.

The fact that Stack cannot speak to a lawyer (or anyone) is both draconian and inhumane.

It's very strange.
Male prisoners, in COVID iso, are not allowed any contact or to appear at court hearings via video link.
Female prisoners, in COVID iso, get to appear at their court proceedings via video link and can have contact with their lawyers.
The female iso breacher from Adelaide who did exactly the same as Sydney, on two occasions, has had her date in court. She's still in the slammer but she's been able to plead her case.
There's also some Russian bloke who speaks no English in the same situation as Sydney. Allowed to come in to join a ship in port but breached quarantine and is now locked up and doesn't know why.
