Sydney Stack

hard to comment ... I'm sunny side up like EzY. if someones head isn't straight i automatically assume they'll get it straight, but also think repeat offenders are always going to be because that's what they do - offend repeatedly.
is Stack a repeat offender? I dunno if he is? yet ...

yeah thats the downside of being sunny side up :D,

you get acutely disappointed.

Thats the price of entry into the happy place.

Sunny side up types don't condemn repeat offenders - look at Marlion. Change is possible for anyone at any age.

Sure, maybe its not to be with the tigers, but I damn sure hope it is because I reckon this kid has something more to offer society than just his football talents.

yeah, thats it. The kid is good looking, can really dance, and oozes charisma.

Ive never met him, but a mate knows him and reckons hes a lovely young fella.

Im no shrink, but I'd suspect the apparent extreme confidence and charisma (which could certainly *smile* people to tears) is a coping mechanism for an ongoing, chaotic upbringing (on top of an underlying attempted genocide), that induces self doubt, insecurity and anxiety. Sometimes, when you are experiencing these emotions, but are really, really good at something, it can create a real dissonance deep inside. One that is extremely hard to manage. Ask Robbie Muir, Jimmy Krakoeur and a hundred dozen other blokes

But that stuff settles out with time and love (ask Jess Pickett, time and love jigsaw champion of the world)

(sure, attempted genocide takes quite some measure of time and love, before it turns into rock at the bottom of the sea)

That makes two of us, I get my fix from PRE, I'm not on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
Well, that makes 3 of us. No way am I going to subscribe to Facebook, twitter or any other so called social media outlets. Prefer to get my Tiger news on here and not be subjected to online scamming or giving access to online trolls.

That Sydney didnt deal with the added social and cultural ramifications of Covid on top of him struggling with the professional standards of being an AFL footballer? 20 year old black kid with a tough upbringing locked up 4000km from home? its a pretty big ask. I wonder how Marlion would have coped at 20? Dusty? Callum Coleman Jones?
Pickett is a good comparison, many on here hold him up as a role model for Stack- at the same age he was in jail for burgarly, and was using and dealing ice. At 24 Pickett was charged with after getting in a fight, though not convicted.

It may be best for all if Richmond let Stack go, but i really dont think many on here get where Stack has come from. we all learn lfe skills- organisation, discipline, punctuality etc growing up. from the sounds of it, he hasnt really had the chance to, so the likelihood of him suddenly becoming a changed man at 20 is pretty low. that doesnt mean he couldnt make it as a footballer, but that there were always going to be issues on the way.
likewise with his fitness, yes he needs to put in the work, which it sounds like he hasnt, but he would likely have been drafted with a really low base, because he has never trained hard as a teenager to build his fitness. and he has never had the opportunity to develop good habits eating wise, or fitness wise. it is easy to say he should just change now, but as with most of us, he ahs reverted to what he knows best when challenged.

should Richmond cut him? by the sounds of it probably, but should people be sitting behind key boards taking personal pot shots at a kid they have never met, or at the least never seen what his life growing up has been like? No.

Personally I would sign Syd up for another two years.
He will miss this one with jail time and needs time to mature.
If he has the necessary " seen the light moment" then we take him back in 2022.
I do not want him at another club. He is a sublime talent when in decent physical condition.
I think Dusty and Marlion.....it can be done.

Young, brash indigenous man dealing with COVID restrictions.

Is lost at the moment, needs to be in clubland with his brothers.

I’d keep him. Send him to X Clarke when he’s able to leave.

Folks are jumping the gun here. Quick to end his career. He’s a young man bursting with life and making poor decisions. COVID is a minefield for young men. A straitjacket. Throw in his culture and I have the utmost sympathy.

He’s salvageable. Look at Jordan de Goey - up on a charge we would consider far more serious than anything Sydney has done.

What's the rap sheet? A bit of push and shove. We've all been there. He broke COVID rules and yes that's serious. But can we expect young men in the prime of life to be wise 100% of the time? To have understanding of wider ramifications of every little action?

Keep him RFC. Bring him back into clubland. He loves the club and just needs to mature a bit, live a bit.

This is the hardest time for him hopefully and he’ll work through it.

My mail is that the reason that Syd was overlooked by all clubs in the first place in the draft was heavily tied to an incident whereby he had too much to drink one night - got into a fight and as a result another person received a broken jaw. Sydney is a young man who seems to enjoy himself outside footy (no harm in that per se) but can overstep his boundaries. I loved what he brought to the field in 2019 (thought how good could this kid be & how lucky are we ?)- not so much in 2020. And prior to Covid he was not in good shape at pre-season at the start of the year when Covid was just something tied to Wuhan. He wasn't up to standard when he first came over in 2019 but really applied himself. Then he regressed - others have suggested he is not in good physical shape at the moment. So, after having to push himself super hard at the start & setting a new spew record at training....he lets himself go. Not once but twice? After saying he had owned up to his mistakes with Souvlaki gate he goes out and gets into another brawl ?? I would suggest we are looking at someone who is not learning from his mistakes. Th Club copped a hefty fine and we were up in lights, when we didn't want to be the first time around - possibly we could have had another staff member on the payroll but for the fine (conjecture only). All the best to him but..............

I agree with the last three posts by Carter, Brodders and Pete. Keep working with him.

I have had very little experience with indigenous Australians, but I have had a little. The level of disadvantage is off the charts. I work with some very disadvantaged people as part of my job in Victoria, but it is nothing compared to what i have seen with Indigenous communities. It may be an incredibly difficult task to turn Stack's life around, but it would also be a very worthy goal to achieve.

And as far as people judging him on here, that's way out of line. I've got a couple of boys around his age who have enjoyed ever opportunity growing up, and the still 'smile' up pretty often. Especially in regards to Covid restrictions.

I just hope the club continues to work with Stack for as long as it takes.

You don't feed the club you love and your teammates a huge pile of BS.

That's four stuff ups by my count - 2020 hub lack of condition and effort, kebabgate, this preseason in poor condition, and now this - skipping quarantine and then going on partying and brawling.

At some point you have to cut your losses.

ON GEELONG STAYING AT THE TOP

Carter believes the first rule of business – and thriving as a football club – is minimising those self-inflicted controversies that so often befall rivals.

“Footy clubs make decisions on football and list management and staff and if you can get eight or nine of those decisions right out of 10 you are in with a big show,” he said.

“If you make bad decisions the headwinds hit you. If you get four or five decisions right out of 10, the margins are so tight you probably finish in the bottom half of the ladder.

“I have watched a lot of footy clubs and at any one point in time a third of clubs are making life difficult with inner turmoil.

“If you can avoid that, you are competing for a position in the top 12. Nothing that has happened has persuaded us that’s incorrect.

“In the old days the cheque book would cover a multitude of organisational sins.

“You could trash your organisation and buy a champion from Adelaide or Perth, but you can’t do it any more so it can take years to recover from bad decisions.”

I thought this comment last week from Colin Carter was insightful and was my key takeaway. It applied to Richmond over the last 10 years, which apart from a few hiccups (2016 board challenge and chopstick-gate come to mind), has grown from its stability into a powerhouse and 3 unbelievable premierships.

I think the club has rolled the dice on a few players the last few years, after avoiding Ben Cousin-type stories for the last 10 years. Stack and Pickett are the two obvious ones.

Pickett has paid off in spades - his maturity and four kids has played a big part. The guys is focussed on setting up his family for life.

Stack however after an amazing first year, has lead to the turmoil that Colin Carter describes - through turning up out of shape two years in a row to the infamous and more serious kebab incident which cost the club dearly. I think the club will be torn and wanting to support the young kid they drafted. But also looking to avoid future headlines.

The club will know more in the coming days/month and respond accordingly. My bet, after a 2020 of club headlines, is that they will look to move forward without stackman and his headlines.

This is a really difficult one. He has been given quite a few chances, but we have been in a very difficult situation this year and that would exacerbate the issues he already has.

I really don't know but I do know the club will be in a better position to judge than I am so they will hopefully make the right call.

I've always said we should have dumped that guy years ago

One difference - I can forgive off-field shenanigans as long as no one gets hurt. I can't forgive lack of effort and poor preparation and that's something that you could never accuse Dusty of. And this is two years in a row for Sydney now.

Big difference between Marlion and Stack, Marlion had children and a wife when he was sent to jail.

The reality check was profound and changed his life.

Maybe the best thing for Stack would be if the judge gives him six months in jail for his Covid breeches.

Stack needs a reality check not indulgence.

From Richmond's point of view the line in the sand moment for Stack must be fast approaching.

1 unfit after the 6 week Covid layoff.
2 Covid breech in the hub
3 Returns to training out of shape
4 Covid breech in W.A.
5 Involved in a brawl

At some point Stack must be responsible for his own life and not expect others to clean up the messes he leaves behind.

IIRC Dimma ripped Dusty a new one for turning up in not ideal shape 2016 pre season

2 years in a row isn't great I agree

could be Taz... my memory of pre 2016 is pretty hazy

I'm all supporting all our players who get into trouble and especially our indigenous boys given some of them have had tough circumstances. Will be interesting to see if he gets one more chance from the club.
