Steve Morris F/S

Why do so many think his shoulder injury is a reason or excuse for his woeful form?

Does this injury cause him to continually miss targets?

Does this injury cause him to lose his opponent in traffic?

Does this injury cause him to go to ground in the contest?

Does this injury cause him to take on opponents in the bowels of the defensive 50 and get caught time and time again?

He is nothing short of a liability back there. Would be close to the worst decision maker I have seen in the yellow and black, and we have had some shockers.

Might be more suited to a wing or maybe even on the ball? Just too costly down back.

What would Dimma do if Madonna had played a game like Morris did yesterday?

Hmmm.

It's easy to overreact
Over the last couple of years he provided good value. He was desparate and tough but importantly be beat his opponent more often than not.
Overall there was a net positive and he deserved his spot.
This year he has been injured and played bravely with that injury - but he's also made too many mistakes and cost goals and been beaten by his oppenents. It's irrelevant if the injury has caused the poor form.
The reality is right now that there is a net negative.
He's not the worst RFC player or the worst decison maker or whatever else is being said.
But for the time being he's not in the best 22 and needs to be replaced.

Sorry TT74 imo he has been a weak link for years, again this match he was terrible and I don't buy the shoulder thing, he is too slow and doesn't think fast enough. Not a patch on his father he put together some good games for RFC and Collingwood

No worries PR64, i actually called i think in round 3 for him to have his shoulder shorted out, so i agree he has been a liability this season for sure..

Well said Tenacious. He was the first small defender we'd had who could hold the small forwards. I doubt we would have lost the game against Freo over there last year if Morris had played (he was suspended), he wouldn't have let Ballantyne run riot the way he did that night. Steve was doing well against opponents and being talked up, not just here, until the shoulder injury hit. And yes an injury can make you do uncharacteristic things that don't seem to affect that body part, it plays on your mind and it bothers you. Jackson spoke last year about how some of his improvement could be put down to being fully fit for the first time in a few seasons.
Having said that at present Morris is a liability and should be rested for the remainder of the season to get the shoulder worked on. His contract situation isn't an issue, so he has no worries on that front, and giving his spot to a younger player on the fringes may help that player cement a spot and will assist the team going forward.

Absolutely nailed it Carn

Agree he was atrocious and has been all year but what did people think of Jasper Pittard yesterday I reckon he won us the game ?

Gave away 3 goals with his poor decision making and holding the ball x 2.

Hardwick tried to stem the tide by hiding him up forward with nil impact.

Needs to get some confidence in the VFL and/or change his playstyle so he doesn't get worked out so easily by the opposition.

Had Conca not been concussed I'm pretty certain the change would have been made to sub Morris off.

I was a big fan last year. Still think he's ok, but needs a break.
He is obviously playing injured, and (like many in the team), lacking form and confidence.
I'd like to see him spelled. Get the shoulder (and anything else) sorted out for next season. This gives us a look at another kid too. Get Madonna in.

the continual selection of Morris in the side is just a sad indication of where our coach is at.
We will go nowhere as a side or a club until glaringly obvious mistakes like this are fixed.

Take Morris and Newman out and team looks a lot better.

With Morris playing, we effectively give other teams 3 or 4 goals head start.

Bill James came up with the amazing stat that 10 of Port's 16 goals came from either a Morris turnover or Morris' direct opponent at the time.

Is dropping Morris the secret to our future success?
