32 is still overs. Massive. Underperformed to the max, I know your not defending Spooky.

For the price paid and the best possible outcome we could get out of Hampson, I'm not sure we couldn't have got 75% of with Tommy D or Orren or even Mark Seaby out of the WAFL. But we still don't have a young ruck coming through.

We haven't addressed that imbalance in the list. Who is the best preformed ruck in the WAFL, SANFL and VFL? Rookie one of them.
I reckon we have two developing rucks: TV and Griff. They just need to be competitive in ruck contests; around the ground they can be very handy.

Beanie might be the next Dean Cox.

I'm far from an apologist for him, but Hampson has improvement in him, albeit off a low base. He wouldn't have been dominated at centre bounces in the final like Ivvy was, but then he wouldn't have kicked the cracking goals either.

How old is he? 26? Was Sandilands still useless at that age? Rucks' best years are late 20s, early 30s.

Hampson is ours now, for better or worse, for two more years. I'd be trying to make a footballer out of him. Just because we haven't yet doesn't mean we give up.

Yep, we are stuck with him. Just have to hope he comes good. Horrible trade buy your right.

Not sure both of TV & Griff are around next year. Still think we need a ruck coming through.

Maybe Sandilands's taps don't all go to advantage. Maybe he is over-rated by some. But he is the ultimate defensive ruck weapon in the air. He cannot get slaughtered at the taps. The other bloke cannot possibly get more air and un-hampered, direct the ball to set plays areas. (Sure, you can impede his tap and let the ball fall to feet, but that's your ruck defending not setting up nuclear plays.)

Ivan can get slaughtered. The other bloke can get a lot more air ant set running mids to space in set plays. (See 2014 EF for an example of Warnock jumping all over Ivan.)

Hampson is very good at one thing. Not getting slaughtered at the centre bounce. This, we know only too well, is a crucial skill.

Hampson gets air. And can actually direct the ball to our areas. (Not just the feet.)

He can't take a mark but he can stop their bloke from doing it. When he's not pretending to be a statue he can chase and get there. He can get there. Very good things. He can't kick and he can't mark and seems to have no idea of forward play.

ATM Ivan gets exposed badly in the air and can't get there.

Our two strike rucks are sadly deficient players ATM. Maybe Ivan can get some touch and regain some of his mobility. And maybe Hampson can develop.

When we traded for Hampson we didn't bite the bullet on Maric. Should we have off-loaded a Griffiths or a Vickery and traded for a new #1 ruck? Or go for the patch-up?

FWIW I think Hamspon has proven to be a perfect replacement so far. For Orren.

We need at least one of Ivan or Hampson to come good by season's end.

Great post, could not agree more, I'd have my money on Hampson to become our no 1 ruck. (Granted he is not a fwd/ruck but he is a potential top 5 no 1 ruckman)

How do you go about "making a footballer out of him"?

When we were going particularly well, T68, Ivan was a force in the ruck. I don't believe Hampson can ever be that.

I am a member of the anti-ruck school. Your ruck can be largely useless as long as he stops the other ruck. If Hampson can work on his gift for getting in the way and tap the ball to our preferred areas he'll do.

Sorry I could take a better mark from my couch at home than this statue. What a liability!

Why does he play every week then?

Shaun isnt selecting himself to play. Its the matchless committee that keeps selecting him Theyre the ones that should be blamed

2nd best ruckman on the ground.

Did you watch the game? Derrickx is miles in front of him. Geniuses at Punt rd gave up a 2nd rd pick for this dud and delist Derrick. These decisions make you wonder if we have the most clueless list managers in the game

Derrickx is not in front of him. No way in hell. As bad as he has been
