Goes to show if you're 200+ cm and are remotely athletic, there's a place for you in AFL - even if you couldn't catch a beach ball or have no kicking skills whatsoever.

Seriously, how did Hampson get into the AFL system? How did Hardwick find anything to like about his game yesterday as stated in his post game media conference? We must see it as a positive that Megan allows Hampson out each week to turn up & put a Richmond jumper on. That's about the limit of his contribution.

It's neck and neck between Hampy and Tom: http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?tid1=15&pid1=1735&tid2=17&pid2=3506&type=T&fid1=S&fid2=S

Toms 5 goals puts him ahead IMO. Although tommy kills him for clangers.

Hard to compare Hampy with Orren as Orren doesn't get the same opportunities Hampy does.

Good stats there. Probably means we should have just kept Tom as back up, got rid of Orren and recruited a quick mid with pick 28. We would be no worse off right now and we would have a potentially good player - bad bit of business to sack Tom and spend pick 28 on Hamper.

Could've we got Taylor at pick 32 or whatever it turned out to be?

That could've been our small forward right there for the next 10 years.

im sure they only reason we keep playing him is because megan picks him up after the game. as there is no way he has the sense of direction or the co ordination which would allow him to drive himself anywhere

Collingwood supporters want him out. 30 touches none hit a target
Thank Christ we didn't him too

Hampson was recruited so we don't get slaughtered in the ruck by the ruck giants.

I would assume, and I agree wholeheartedly, that the Richmond brains trust concluded that we lost that final against the Blues because Maric was absolutely pantsed in the ruck that day by the giant, Warnock. Rucks aren't that important, unless you get pantsed in the ruck. Then they're ridiculously important.

Getting Hampson was about not getting pantsed in the ruck. Maric, Stephenson, Graham and Derickx are each too short or unathletic against the giant rucks. Although Hampson is a pretty ordinary player generally, he won't get pantsed in the ruck. He's too tall and athletic for that.

In my reckoning, that's why we bothered to get him.

Name another ruckman that can't mark and can't kick

No Taylor went 28, Hampson trade was 32 after compo picks. We could never of had Taylor.

Our best period vs Freo was the second quarter when Hampson was getting clearances out of the centre. Hampson was responsible for two clearances vs Sandilands that both resulted in goals. Hampson was good in the ruck yesterday, Maric was easily beaten. I'm sure Hampson can kick at goal better than his showing, I'm not sure Maric can become an A grade ruckman.

If a ruckmans job was to contest a ball up and then disappear in to thin air until the next one, Shaun Hampson would be one of the best pickups we have. Sadly there is more to the position than that.

Damien thought he played OK. Going along those lines, he's pretty much in the side as long as DH is around.

then, quite apart from Hampson being a demonstrable liability outside the centre circle, this is a match day coaching problem. why dimma persists in allowing hampson to rest forward is beyond me. he occasionally clunks a mark and f's up the kick for goal OR he clunks a mark in front of jack when he i guess is supposed to draw attention away from jack. he clogs the list then he clogs forward space and our midfielders can't see past the big link. he needs to be rested on the bench or better by the bassinet at home

Yes no doubt there is more to the position, but the core competancy of a ruckman is providing the team with first use of the footy. Hit outs to advanatge are highly correlated to centre clearance and centre clearances are highly correlated to winning games. Maric will never provide this advanatage. Hampson might develop a more rounded game with some patience. Lets not forget he has been in the best a few times this year - he did not have a good game on the weekend but Sandilands would have had 60 hitouts had Hampson not played. Just as Goldstein was BOG when Hamspon did not play last week.
