I'm a simple beast. I just don't understand why the biggest guy we have out on the field can't take a mark. There was one time during the Geelong game when the players around him were noticeably smaller, the ball got put on his head and he still couldn't mark it.

I just don't agree with anyone closer to seven feet tall than six who can't grab the ball. Regardless of the obvious issues, shouldn't be in the side - Stephenson is in the same boat. A defense under pressure must have an outlet pass - we aren't getting it from Vickery or Hampson or really by anyone (including Griffiths). We walk it out or we chip it out or Riewoldt comes up to the defensive 50. It isn't good enough.

Found this graph in an article. Places Shaun 18th on the list of ruckmen for a rating average of hit outs to advantage, marks, goals, clearances and disposals for 2014.

this table does not show anything but a bunch of numbers...give us some real stats

and the fact that trent west is ranked 7th in the league just goes to show how credible this table is.

Sorry Leysy, trolling to me is making snide remarks which go beyond the realms of sensible debate. Comments like he must have 'broken fingernails', he's the next McMahon, he's a dinosaur, he's the reason we are down the bottom of the ladder etc, etc. Much like the relentless criticism of Petterd with name calling like Pet *smile* and likening him to herpes, I'm just about at my wits end with the juvenile attacks. My earlier comment wasn't directed at Astute who I enjoy having banter with, it's some of the others who offer nothing in the way of reasonable discussion and are only capable of focusing on the negative. With regards to Hampson, I have remained balanced in my view, I've acknowledged his deficiencies but I also place a premium on giving our mids first use of the ball.

I've also made it clear about the situation the RFC forced itself into by not recruiting Grundy when we had the opportunity, I've canvassed all the probable quick fixes and not one detractor has come up with any sensible alternatives. We had no leverage to recruit McEvoy or Mumford, and it's debatable whether they could have played alongside Maric anyway. The two viable alternatives in Apeness & Lobbe were selected before pick 32. We could have selected Nankervis but he can't even challenge Derickx for a spot in Sydney's starting line-up. Some may argue that Stephenson, Vickery & Griffiths could be used but like I mentioned earlier, their ability to give our mids first use is vastly inferior to Hampson.

Do I think he's a superstar in the making? No I do not, but he was the best thing available to us in a precarious situation. Most are obviously expecting him to come in and dominate but that is completely unreasonable.

Do I think he can improve? Yes I do, he's 6 games into a career as a full time ruckman and has already made some incremental rises in his work around the ground.

Do I think pick 32 was unreasonable? No I do not given our immediate need for a combative ruckman who could step up immediately.

Some may not agree but that shouldn't be an invitation to troll, if people cannot see the distinction then maybe I need to give this forum a rest. Posters such as Ridley, Tygrys & Merveille obviously feel that 'debate' should only be about slagging off players at every turn and diminishing the argument to an 'I'm right & your wrong' b!tchfest, irrespective of performance or weighing up the pro's & cons. That is their prerogative but I simply don't have time for these type of exchanges.

Interesting, none of your examples of snide remarks can be attributed to me - not one.
I have been critical of two player only, Grigg and Petterd, and backed up my reasons with arguments.

You and Kirtz suggested there was no debate - i defied that suggestion and believed I was entitled to my argument. Another poster jumps on and says your opinion is worth than mine - ironically Petterd gets dropped after the next game and the debate goes on - you included!

For that you attach my name to those snide remarks above - and you call me a troll???

Hamson improved a lot yesterday. Not hard. For the previous three games he was a statue. But he improved a lot. I thought he was a six out of ten. ;D No, really.

Anyway he started the game badly in the ruck. He was beaten in the taps by Simpson. Hamster may have got a spray, you can only guess, but his work at ground level improved. He got involved in the game at ground level and over the course of the game he won his position.

Vickery was a good move into the ruck because Simpson is a log and McIntosh is not much better at ground level. Vickery's agility was a big advantage. So our rucks won on the day. We often cleaned Geelong up at the stoppages.

However. Hampson did not lay a tackle. He did a very good impression of Aaron Fiora at one stage. (In a pocket, NFI.) Hampson is quick over the lawn. He has to chase more IMO. Five chases a game will change our dynamic a lot.

Secondly Hamson doesn't have to catch it. Particularly in the wet. But he has to stop them from catching it. Could a done more at a few aerial contests. Hamster can and will get air. More of that.

Hardwick point blank potted Hampson in his presser. Said that he thought that Hampson was the best big man on the ground and then potted him for how easily he was thrown around. He looked bewildered and a pissed off. Said we'd have to work on that during the week.

He's easily thrown around because he's top heavy, long-legged lean-hipped. Built for diving not footy. But he has to get lower at the contests. Then spring or chase.

Vastly improved game that started badly. Very encouraging with obvious areas to work on.

saw the stat, but didn't see the mark, really. Does anyone remember where on the ground, and which quarter.

Is this the first sign of more confident ball handling by our recruit

It was during the game.

I said to my daughter: "Hampson just took a mark."

She replied, in her best Mum from The Castle voice: " Dale dug a hole today, Darryl."

;D

Years ago I saw Steve Curry on New Year's eve, at the rooftop bar at the Terminus Hotel. From about 10m away I yelled at him: "Dad, I dug another hole!" He walked over, stuck out his hand and said: "Steve Curry. G'day." Classy.

Excellent summation as usual Jack.

The other thing I noticed in the Geelong game was his attempt to use his body around the stoppages after the hittout. This marks a big step forward in his sub-conscious - agree with you statue comment in games prior to this game.

Hopefully there all fit but it's going to be interesting which way they go when Hampson, Maric , Vickery an griffo are all available , personally I'd go Maric, Griffiths an TV , I reckon it can work if the last two do

If Elton keeps doing well in the twos he probably deserves a game or two in the big league to give him a taste of what's expected.
