Hasn't he got a three-year contract under his arm? If that's the case, it's not likely he is going to be discarded too soon.

Hampson had 7 contested possessions today with 6 clearances, he's getting there.

Bully i luv ur enthusiasm but hampster was deplorable around the ground, voted 2nd worst, newy got worst on ground and varcoe 3rd....
We know he can tap dont think anyone disputes that but gives nothing else, no endurance does not give us an out to take a big grab like Maric does and even Griff was taking some big marks...1 mark in 3 weeks is simply not good enough....

He was listed second best on the AFL site so it becomes a matter of opinion. I've covered the marking issue in previous posts and I realise some feel he has no future but I beg to differ. When Maric is fit then maybe he goes back, but he stays until that time.

Mate he just looks so clumsy, and yes ive read ur points on his marking u know blues supporters said he cant kick and mark but i thought to myself he can help us in the ruck but now i have massive doubts and i can only really critique the games seen thus far for us and im not impressed.....Well id much prefer ty and griff doing the ruck as at least they can give us something around the ground....
Hampson cant possibly stay in the side purely based on his tap work its unfathomable to think that, he must provide more to warrant being 1st or 2nd ruck........

Hampson has some great skills and some not so good, but you aren't going to get a top quality ruckman with pick 28 (or whatever it turned out to be 30 something recycled from another club).

Clearly he was brought in before we realised Griff could do well in the ruck, I think he must have come out and had a great pre-season. The decision as to who the ruck combination will be willcome down to:

1 - Trust if whether to play TV and Griff in the ruck together (its not there yet, as shown by Orren playing against the Dogs instead of Hampson)
2 - How Maric is getting on, can he be the primary ruck now, does he still have the physical capacity to do so. If not and he won't carry the tap rucking, then he will come in for either Vickery or A Edwards (based on today's lineup) rather than Hampson. If he can be the primary, then for me he comes straight in for Hampson.

Hampson has come in to do a job and that's to provide the contest to help win clearances, generally we have been great at clearances this year (ranked number 1 in the AFL) so he is contributing to the job he has been recruited for. We are also ranked 3rd for hitouts, just Fremantle with that monster Sandilands and GWS with Mumford at the start of the year ahead of us. Everyone can see his deficiencies and I'm sure we would all love to see him go away and take those big grabs, but he won't learn this overnight but hopefully its something he's working on. Maybe when his kid comes along it will help, he sure won't want to be dropping that!!

Seriously, he can't mark. it is a really big problem.

Fix it or move on I say. A ruckman needs to take grabs, its critical for defensive zone and structure across HB and HF.

Maric takes some great marks in last line, he did it for the crows too, gee I miss him.

The other thing that having a ruckman that can take marks around the ground, whether it's Maric or someone like McEvoy, is it allows for an outlet kick to the ruckman when rebounding from defensive 50, particularly after a behind or stop in play.

We've lost this without Ivan, and it hasn't been replaced by Hampson. Maric used to clunk plenty of marks when we kicked out from defensive 50. Now we are one of the worst rebounding teams in the competition.

Agree. He has hands of cement. It is ridiculous how poor he is at marking. Yeah it was a tough day but Harry Taylor took 13!!! Astbury took 7. Chaplin took 7  Even Vickery took 3!!!

A ruckman who can not mark is a liability. He's nowhere near good enough.

Sensible post, I wish there could more of it to be honest. People comparing him to Maric are missing the point, he's our second ruck and was the only decent option available to us at pick 32. The marking is an issue but hopefully that comes in time. Like I have stated many times, people need to go & check the highlights of his 2012, he was seen as the most improved player at the time, nobody gets those accolades if they can't take a mark. Today was also wet, he can be forgiven under such circumstances. If his mojo never returns then so be it, we'll just have to search high & low for another quality ruck.

Leigh Matthews seriously doubts the value of Sandilands as a "tap ruckman specialist. What on earth would he say about Hampson!

Quite a few tall players took marks in the wet today. Taylor 13, McIntosh 3, Lonergan 5, Hawkins 4, Rivers 4, Astbury 7, Vickery 3, Riewoldt 5, Chaplin 7.

Hampson gives us nothing around the ground. He is a dinosaur and a liability. What was his excuse for not taking marks in the first 6 games. Broken fingernails?

He looks good in a RFC jumper ::)

With iVan out for a good chunk of the season all I can say is thank Griffin we recruited him.

The iVan/Hamster combo will be interesting to see.

I gather you don't like him and don't have the patience to allow him develop but he's all we've got at the moment. One thing I can guarantee is that if we allow Griffiths or TV to ruck in Maric's absence, we will be smashed in the clearances. That obviously doesn't mean much to the typical supporter but I'm sure the coaching staff see things a lot differently.

I can see this is turning into another whipping boy thread, might be time to give PRE a rest for a while. Enjoy the trolling lads.

I agree with your view. Our style of play dictates that we need first use of the ball, that's when we look good and I don't think the coaches trust the TV / Griff partnership to help us win the clearances consistently over a full game. This may be the future, but neither are good enough to dominate yet and are back ups essentially for the ruck. Interesting to see where Maric sits when he comes back.

Trolling my arse. If you're happy with a ruckman who can't take marks and compete around the ground then good for you. The recruiting of Hampson and other rejects of his ilk is a huge part of the reason why the RFC is an abject failure year after year.

Its not about whether i like him, its my opinion to what i see, and i dont think im being unreasonable he doesn't give us much around the ground and cant mark but i have acknowledged his tap work....U say i "don't have the patience to allow him develop", im all for learning and development but he can do that in the 2nds and also work on other areas of his game...
