you think so? gee i reckon our biggest deficiency is pace (or lack of) and we just lost the quickest player in our squad :(

Whitey whilst getting older is quick no doubt and a bit of a loss but perhaps they see us picking up outside pace elsewhere.
A seasoned ruck/forward is a lot more difficult to secure.

I've closely reviewed three different highlight videos of Hampson and am amazed at the attitude of some posters towards him. For mine he is the ideal big man fit for the Tigers in terms of age, size, athletic ability, versatility and experience.

One only has to go back to Brad Ottens to see how much we mismanaged him. A big, mobile ruckman who could also dominate a forward line. IIRC correctly there are still some here on PRE with the same doubts on Hampson as they once had on Ottens. I guess Geelong proved otherwise when Brad was instrumental in helping them win 3 flags at ages 27, 29 and 31!

In all seriousness we need to go way back to the days of David Cloke to get an idea what Hampson can provide us with. Back then Cloke paid ruck/CHF and, at times, a kick behind the play. Roach was the gun forward(as Riewoldt is now) with Cloke crashing packs around CHF. He took heaps of marks, kicked plenty of goals and sprayed plenty, and our crumbers had a field day around him. We haven't won a flag since he left to go to Collingwood. Has to be a message there somewhere!

Tye Vickery should develop into an enormous asset for us. At this stage though he is not a ruckman in my opinion. Relying on him and Maric for at least the next 12 months is too big an ask. Tye is not yet ready and the work load is too big for Ivan alone. Many times this year he played injured because we could not do without him. Manage him better, use Hampson as the main ruck back-up, develop Tyrone more gradually and use Orren Stephenson as a very solid reliable stop-gap.

In summary I reckon we can now give a top 4 finish a big shake in 2014. Without Hampson we would struggle to stay in the 8. Time will tell!

I'm figuring a lot here have watched more of Hampson at Carlton than I have because over the years I have seen him I have thought he was an extremely talented but very raw tall who was surplus to Carlton's list needs and was being played out of position to plug gaping gaps in their list.
Am hoping that this is once again a very savvy decision by Blair. The thought of a McGuane/White swap for Hampson seems a logical one from a list needs POV.
We have seen how Ivan has flourished at Tigerland when given the opportunity in the ruck, here's hoping lightning strikes again.
Give the big fella a chance people.
Wouldn't White/MCguane for say Mumford be more appealing? Or Jesse White? Then get a SLR "Hampson"? Gabriel, Baulderstone, Scott Simpson, Lobb....... Or target a "Hampson" quality ruck but with a later pick. Blicavs, GRimley?

Mumford? Swans are laughing at you.
JWhite? More realistic but only a minor upgrade on Luke IMO.
Hampson is more of a genuine ruckman and an affordable one at that.
Fits the bill pretty well for our requirements.

Not White/MCGuane as a direct swap of course! But as a net/loss gain as you originally alluded to.
Mummy for eg 28 and a player or a change of latter picks.

Agree his highlights package is promising. With real backing and injury free he could develop confidence and soar to places he has yet to realise. We have paid overs on this promise.

Ok sorry.

Mumford whilst still a pretty good player, looked like he was just going at times this year.
Would not be at all surprised if the Swannies have gotten the best from him anyway.
Also limited when going forward much like Ivan in many ways.

Truth be told we just have to wait and see re Shaun.

Think I read somewhere that Mummy went to GWS for about 600 n the Hamster came to us for about 250, massive difference in beer money.

if our club was any good we would have got Mummy for 250. We're a rabble.

Read somewhere it was closer to 700k.

Staggering.

Whatever we say here, Hampson is now a Tiger so we get behind him and give him our support. We know he must has something good otherwise Hartley and the club wouldn't have made a play for him. He could well be another great pick up like Maric, Houli, Morris, Chaplin and Knights so lets wait till the end of 2014 season before we judge him in Tigers colours

And the fact he chose to become a Tiger shows he has brains, so a good start there!

Hope he does well at Tigerland and hope we can do something about his kicking in front of goal.

What worries me is that his recruiting might say more about Maric than it does Hampson. The reason we didn't go for a younger player may be that Maric's groin issue could be a bit of a ticking time bomb and hence the ready mature replacement in case he needs extended rests next year.

To all those having a dig at Hampson I'd remind them Chaplin Maric knights Grigg Houli all had their PRE objectors too, and they have all made significant contributions to the teams improvement
