The best ruckman in the sanfl is a big lug of a bloke from king island. Formed a good partnership with a former no. 4 afl draft pick for sturt..

;D

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

No from me, if we want to go after a ruckman, Id rather us go hard for Billy Longer.

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

Apeness?

What an awesome name. Same side profile as Jason Dunstall no doubt. Hope we recruit him.

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

Not for mine unless he's comes incredibly cheap. We need to do better than the Hampsons of the world. I don't think he belongs in the top 22 of a top 4 side.

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

Longer would be better. Why aren't we targetting him?

The media have reported some interest but we appear to be trailing Hawthorn as his preferred home.

Ah right. thanks for that.

Rather than Hampson and Chappy, we should really go hard at Longer and Adams. Break out the checkbook FFS. We never seem to really take a risk these days and pay out some big money for a young gun.

Retire a few guys if we have to free up some cash. Fortune favours the brave.

Bloody Collingwood, Carlton, Sydney and Hawks do it. Why shouldn't we.

agree with this 100%. would love Longer, but from media reports he wants Hawks, and they have plenty of room post Buddy. My hunch, reading between the lines, would be we had a crack and it didn't come off re these 2.

To me Hampson and Longer are apples and oranges, I'd Love to get Longer and would pay top dollar, would be Ok with taking a punt on Hampson if we get him cheap and given Longer has already knocked us back, if that makes sense.

Salary cap. Only Sydney get the better of these situations

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

Talk is Carlton are chasing Shane Savage from the Hawks, Carlton want to do a swap with Hampson for him.

I guess Hawthorn might go for it if Bailey retires? Let's hope so!

with their recycling track record he'll probably end up as a premiership player.

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

Yep heard same thing hawks are right into him as the asking price for longer is far to high

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

I like the thinking here... if his body gets the all clear.

Vickery to be full time ruck in 2015
Jack and McBean/Elton/etc. up forward.
A guy like Hampson/Griff or someone to be found as the swingman FF/Ruck.

It worked for this guy....

The right price in this instance is most definitely not a second rounder, peripheral players like Hampson should be targeted through free agency or player swaps. The last time we traded a second rounder it was for Maric, a player who was second in line in Adelaide's pecking order. Hampson is ranked third at Carlton for both ruck duties & tall forward duties, and the guys above him aren't necessarily superstars either.

Depth is fine but let's not sell the kitchen sink to get it, I could accept giving away a pick around the 40-50 mark but using a pick around the 30 mark is greatly underselling this year's batch of juniors. We could even grab a player like Apeness who plays in a similar manner to Hampson but has a much greater ceiling.

I also hope Blair and co. have done their homework and have a plan to sort out Hampson's frequent yips in front of goal and his tendency to drop the occasional sitter. His form last season was pretty awful and it was no surprise to see Malthouse playing Warnock, Rowe & Casboult ahead of him.

We also need to consider the fact that Hampson is a magnet for injuries, he's never played a full season and his best return has been 15 games, for a grand total of 63 matches over a 7 year period.

I guess the one thing going for him is his age, he's just entering his prime years as a ruckman and may be a late bloomer. It's a pretty big risk however given he's only ever taken a game by the scruff of the neck on a few occasions, the rest of the time it's been a history of pedestrian performances with numerous interruptions due to injury and poor form.

Blair needs to stand firm in the face of Carlton's demands, if the White compo pick is a third rounder then I could live with a straight swap, if we plan on using a pick around the 30 mark then I think we're being bent over.
Good reasoned post, Bullus, and one I agree with.

Great post.

I don't understand why we are looking to trade for a bloke when we want him for depth. Surely he won't be a part of our best 22?

If we are looking for a back-up ruckman/forward surely we could pick one up for nothing or next to nothing, ala Ben Hudson to the Pies, or Stefan Martin to Brisbane

Part of a Geelong-style player management system? Maric does half a year. Hampson does half. Maybe they both play on occasion. Best/fittest performer stays in for the finals.

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

I answered no on this yesterday, but with McGuane going I think he'd be an OK pick up.
