I cannot believe some posters are actually saying yes to recruiting this guy

Staggering, I must of missed the game where he played well, every game I've seen this guy play is hopeless

Hopefully we're only getting him for our vfl side. Rookie pick at best for me

Agreed, let him stay there, he's contracted for another 2 years. Let him bloat their salary cap.
We could get a much cheaper version and probably a better player from the state leagues. Surely our recuiters get around these games. There's got to be some 200cm or thereabouts bloke around that can tap a ball. If he can mark and kick, he's automatically a better prospect than the "ball pein"

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

I say no.
The big O has another year left in him to act as backup.
2014 will tell us if Vickery is going to make it as Ivan's long term replacement or be a permanent KPF.
So by the end of next year we'll know if we want a ruckman or a KPF - assuming McBean/Griffiths/Astbury haven't stepped up.
Meanwhile, we need SPEED. And that's what I'd focus our trading on.

Carlton never play fair.Want a first round pick for him.

Tell 'em they're dreaming!

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

He's the right age for a ruckman for where the list's at, so if the club's identified him then go for it. But not at any price.

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

Yes, but at right price, which is late 2nd r or lower.

The right price in this instance is most definitely not a second rounder, peripheral players like Hampson should be targeted through free agency or player swaps. The last time we traded a second rounder it was for Maric, a player who was second in line in Adelaide's pecking order. Hampson is ranked third at Carlton for both ruck duties & tall forward duties, and the guys above him aren't necessarily superstars either.

Depth is fine but let's not sell the kitchen sink to get it, I could accept giving away a pick around the 40-50 mark but using a pick around the 30 mark is greatly underselling this year's batch of juniors. We could even grab a player like Apeness who plays in a similar manner to Hampson but has a much greater ceiling.

I also hope Blair and co. have done their homework and have a plan to sort out Hampson's frequent yips in front of goal and his tendency to drop the occasional sitter. His form last season was pretty awful and it was no surprise to see Malthouse playing Warnock, Rowe & Casboult ahead of him.

We also need to consider the fact that Hampson is a magnet for injuries, he's never played a full season and his best return has been 15 games, for a grand total of 63 matches over a 7 year period.

I guess the one thing going for him is his age, he's just entering his prime years as a ruckman and may be a late bloomer. It's a pretty big risk however given he's only ever taken a game by the scruff of the neck on a few occasions, the rest of the time it's been a history of pedestrian performances with numerous interruptions due to injury and poor form.

Blair needs to stand firm in the face of Carlton's demands, if the White compo pick is a third rounder then I could live with a straight swap, if we plan on using a pick around the 30 mark then I think we're being bent over.

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

Don't agree Bullus, an average ruck is worth a second rounder any day of the week. Just the market rate.

Some recent second rounders were Sam Jacobs (pick 33), Ivan Maric (pick 37), Shane Mumford (pick 28) and Robert Warnock (pick 24).

The question we need to ask is whether Hampson is in the same league as these guys, my gut feeling is he's not - he's certainly not in the same league as a tap ruckman and also comes with serious questions marks with regards to his fitness. And what role does the club have for him? If we're spending a second rounder on a back-up for Maric & Vickery, then I think we're paying overs. I'd rather just stick with Stephenson and either pick up a junior like Apeness or Lobb, or look at the state leagues for a cheap back-up like Jonathan Giles.

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

Pick 30 is way over the price and I think Carlton know this.

Third rounder would be acceptable if we pick up another third round pick.

But I would scour the State Leagues for a cheap low pick.

I would rather Mark Seaby then pick 30 for Hampson. Who are the top five rucks in the WAFL and top rucks in the SANFL?

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

There were other factors in those trades. And theres a big diff between 25 and 35. Im no expert, but I.d value him at 35-45. What would you pay bullus?

I want to keep pick 11 & our second rounder which should be around 30, if White's compo is a third rounder then I think we could pull the trigger, if it's another pick around 30 then I would rather hold.

I reckon a second rounder for a ruck that you buy to be your number 1 ruck is OK (ie Maric for us last time) but given we have 2 (and maybe 3 if we keep Big O for 1 more year) then I agree that it should be a third rounder for sure (and it is Carlton so there should be a premium deducted as well.

They probably only want a first rounder to make up for Grigg.

Re: poll: Shaun Hampson

RFC have been playing moneyball on a few players over recent years. Just feel this will be a wrong decision. I vote no as too many downsides as mentioned earlier by others

I'm afraid it's gonna take longer for Vickery to make the impact in the ruck that we hope he can.
If in fact he ever does.
Big O is an option in emergency only.
So that's the reason they are looking at a ready to go ruckman for 2014, and not a Longer or equivilant.
Hampson at the right price is not a bad option, given what is available.

The best ruckman in the sanfl is a big lug of a bloke from king island. Formed a good partnership with a former no. 4 afl draft pick for sturt..
