Great work Tigertim.

In doing similar reviews last dew weeks I was even more surprised to find out how irrelevant ruck taps are.

It's almost counter-intuitive but clearances seem to be generated from losing rucks. I have a theory, the mids seem to line up goal side of their opponents and ruckmen tap the opponents way. If the mids cant control it, the momentum actually runs the other side's way. if its squeezed wide almost always a clearance to the losing ruck team unless a bounce or a fumble or tackle gets the ball tracking back the other way.

Yep, I've been saying for a while that ruck work, largely, is irrelevant. It's 2 guys up against each other just trying to get their hands to the ball first ie not intentionally and directly tapping it to a mid.
It's just, largely, blind luck if it goes to his team mate. Yes of course, on occasion, the ruck will beautifully tap it down to one of his mids (Sinclairs tap down to Jack at the 13:37 mark was brilliant) but it's rare.

And again, as I've said before, we don't get in rapture when all those hundreds of kicks and handballs go advantage. But for some reason we love HOTA but so many of these HOTA end in the recipient getting tackled straight away (as they are always at throw ins and ball ups where each sides mids are manned up)

And just to highlight again the HOTA figures (if you believe HOTA leads to clearances). We had 10 and they had 6. Hardly a major difference.

Hawthorn had less than Freo in their game. Essendon and North had the same, 9 each. GWS had 4 more than GCS in their thumping win.

I've said it many times on here, hit outs are the most overrated stat in footy IMO. Give me a ruckman who is able to mark around the ground and give his team the ascendency in the clearances by creating room or doing it himself any day.

Exactly, that's why Maric even though he was getting lower and slower still ranked in the top 50 players on AFL player ratings.

They basically do what Tigertim did on a grand scale for every player. They look at every players involvement and give them points for positive involvements and take away point for negative involvements. BTW last time I looked Hammer was in the 400s.

Sadly Maric appears to be in physical decline and so we need another plan. Griff Vickery and Beanie rucking and forward should give us best of both worlds while we look for a Nicnat or Goldstein (or Chol hopefully)

So how do you acount for this Tigertim :police:

4th ball up. 17.49. Tippett wins tap out to Hannebury.

17.49 Grigg handballs to Jack handballs who to Rioli who runs into goal.

Where was the hammer when Tippett won the ruck contest to Hannebury while Grigg hand balled to jack to Rioli ha? Your stats lie. :-*

I'm hearing you brother, to me the more important aspects of a ruckman is what they can do after the ruck contest. This is where Ivan has been great for us, last season he averaged 8 contested possessions and 3.5 clearances a game, Mumford would be happy with those numbers.

Good on Hampson he has been good this year, but i'd have Ivan back in if he can get his body and fitness to a level that will get him through a game.

I don't totally agree with this. Nic Nat sets up several scoring opportunities each week on the basis of his ruck work. Each week you see Shuey, Priddis and co. getting armchair rides off the big fella as he puts the ball down their throats or sets them into space. They have the luxury of setting up offensively at most stoppages.

I think average ruck work is irrelevant, but the best in the business gives their team a huge advantage and are worth their weight in gold.

Yes it does give them a big advantage, but Hawthorn has managed to nullify the likes of Nic Nac and Sandilands with midfield set ups.

Megans going along very well contests in the ruck even throws his weight around :clap
