Maybe one is young and they're trying to teach him what it takes to be a very good player. The other an older recycled who they know what they can expect of him and plays in a specialist position where we don't have great depth.

So said young player looks at older player and thinks, why improve this area? It's OK for older player not to, yet earn a good long-term contract.

This could be said for a few selections across the board. Not just Hampson.

Culture.

Can you imagine how good the Australian volley ball team would be with Hampson in there... Never has to catch anything just tap the ball back over the net ;)

Yep, certainly understand that but Dimma didnt mention that, only defensive pressure and if he got it up to an acceptable standard THEN they'd look at him for a promotion.

The coach was talking about Beanie and not Hampson.

Trying hard to find the worst possible outcome again.

a) Beanie isn't a ruckman
b) Hampson defensive work isn't as bad as many are making out
c) If I kid is already at the stage where he's looking at senior players and thinking "but he isn't being held back" then he has the wrong attitude
d) The club could be using Hampson as an example. "Look, if you don't do what we say you'll end up a dud like Hampson who's only claim to fame is Megan Gale"
e) When you want to find fault in everything the club do, you will find it even if its not there

Still shake my head in disbelief that we have picked this guy up and gave away pick 28. He is a complete dud. would have rather played the big O or Benny and picked a ruckman from the draft or from the state league and give him year or two develop in our vfl team.

In the end It was pick 32 btw. I like Hampson and see good promise in him as a first ruck. The one thing that has really disappointed me this year is the fans hatred towards the whipping boys. It Doesnt serve the the club well.

That knock can really hurt, it's hard to sleep

They just had a baby. Don't think he'll be getting much sleep anyway.

There are many reasons why fans have derided the selection and then match-day efforts of Hampson. He's not a "whipping boy" for no reason. There are many astute judges of football and footy players on PRE (I don't pretend to be one of them) and it seems, to me at least, that the overall/general verdict on Hampson is that he has been an uneventful and probably fruitless selection, and on a three-year contract to boot.
Not sure what sort of promise Hampson shows as a first ruck, but for the life of me just can't see him being the sort of ruckman you want running out onto the ground in September action. Really brings and adds so very little to the Tigers. In my opinion, he has not been missed over the past couple of weeks.

Shaun does one thing particularly well: he can jump up and get his hand on the ball in a ruck contest. But that's it, really. As this is the only thing that Ivvy doesn't do very well, it's almost as if he's there to form the last piece of the perfect ruckman. The catch, of course, is that this uber ruck specimen takes up two spots. There isn't a team in the comp that can afford that kind of selection largesse.

If Maric got injured tomorrow we would have a competitive ruckman to fill in. A ruckman who was named in the best a few times this year and has had the better of the opposing ruckman on most days when he was first ruck. A good backup ruckman is worth a pick 32 imo. Pick 30 was used on McIntosh and I don't hear much critism of that decision, he has not played a game let alone been named in the best on few occasions. Im hopeful that Hampson will get better, once the club realises he is a first ruckman not a forward. A bit more development in the twos and we could easily be on a winner.
