Bargain bin maybe. But he's not near the same strategy as picking up a re-tred that's been in the system for years.

Absolutely spot on Leysy, I made a list in the hindsight draft thread, 15 recycled players from Frank and only one win - Anthony Miles. When we go down the state league route the odds improve markedly, provided we target high achievers from the VFL, SANFL & WAFL.

Rookie pick 24 - Jake King (108)
Rookie pick 17 - Jarrod Silvester (5)
Rookie pick 8 - Robin Nahas (109)
Pick 66 - Sam Lloyd (26)
Rookie pick 46 - Kane Lambert (16)
Pick 67 - Nathan Broad (0)
Rookie pick 47 - Adam Marcon (0)

Blair Hartley also traded pick 14 for pick 15 and secured Morris who at least contributed as a back pocket and has played 80 games. Now compare that to the recycled list list and we get some idea as to why we have gone so horribly wrong.

Kent Kingsley - 3 games
Clayton Collard - 0 games
Tristan Cartledge - 2 games
Cameron Howat - 1 game
Tom Hislop - 20 games
Brad Miller - 24 games
Ben Cousins - 32 games
Graham Polak - 3 games
Addam Maric - 10 games
Ricky Petterd - 30 games
Sam Lonergan - 2 games
Orren Stephenson - 7 games
Todd Banfield - 0 games
Anthony Miles - 39 games
Matt Thomas - 15 games
Nathan Gordon - 21 games

Matt Dea has been a solid citizen for the Bummers in 2016.

So was he a very poor recruit or did coaching at RFC let him down?

We have a lot of players who seem to get the second year blues at the tigers (and go on to third, forth .....year blues). Batch, Conca, Astbury....

At least Sam is an improver ATM.

Would you class Tuck in the recycled or state league category? Kind of a bit of both categories I suppose. Delisted by Hawthorn, played a season or 2 in SANFL, before being picked up by RFC.

Definitely state league given he played 0 games for Hawthorn. Tuck was a Miller pick and a very good one at that. That particular draft was excellent, Jackson, Raines, Tuck & Foley, all played 100 games and either won a B&F or finished runners-up. We also selected Nathan Brown who was dominating the competition before injury struck. For all his criticism Miller did a reasonable job with the late picks provided they weren't recycled. Don't know what it is but Richmond recruiters are like moths to the flame when it comes to retreads. If I was to pinpoint the one common denominator over the past 30 years that would be it.

Good analogy. But I would have used, 'like flies to *smile*' ;)

The common denominator for me is we have no set strategy. At the draft table or with the list. Look what Melbourne have done. Built a midfield with big strong bodies who can win their own ball but are also above average users by foot. This via the draft and also via trades.

We've had a scatter gun approach for ten years. Grabbing the odd guy here, the odd guy there and never actually building one part of the ground. Building a midfield makes every other area of your ground 10-15% better than it actually is. Win more of the ball, your backline doesn't have to defend. Move the ball quickly your forward line has time and space to work in.

So if you've got no strategy and holes across the list, you tend to gravitate towards retreads to plug the gaps. And that's Richmond.

Sam's been one of the shining lights this year. Enjoy watching him play and he's developing a bit of X factor too. You just don't know what's going to happen when he has the ball.

Thought Lloydy was shown out a bit tonight when playing midfield for periods of the game. Need to stay forward.

Yep another top move by the list manager. Show Matty Dea the dooor and recruit Townsend. Boy oh boy what an inspired choice!!!

And yes Sam has been one of the better retreads but needs to play forward where his strengths are.

Get rid of this dud. Turnover merchant. Defensive pressure is pathetic.

Bit harsh. Has been great up forward and hasn't been too bad defensively from the games I've seen (almost 4 tackles a game for example).

One of our best VFL players currently in an AFL team. ;)

At Richmond we have VFL players and Suburban Grade Footballers playing AFL football and we wonder why we are so pathetic.

Blokes like Lloyd will have 1-2 good games a year. When the heat is at its highest VFL skills cannot match the intensity of the game.

Keeping Lennon out of the seniors. Would he do worse?
Apparently some players need defensive efforts but others dont. Just depends where you sit in the Dimma circle.

He gives. Ok IMO. I like him. But yeah, I see the limitations. I've got him a lock for 18 months.
