Sam Lloyd

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

The tap over the top to Ellis(?) was a new string to his bow. He had shown he was the latest successor to the tag "hungry", he is now showing he can fit in to the team overall and do the less selfish things too.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Watched the game again and he did some great stuff defensively as well. Thought he was really good. Can't really understand why he wasn't given more of a go earlier on. We preferred to persist with Gordon who is just so one dimensional Or Morris who just ain't a forward. Glad Lloyd is now cementing his spot, he deserves it.

I'd prefer him to use his smarts and strength to get in the right spot and take the mark without his feet having to leave the ground.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

My only criticism at the ground was for 1-2 contests when he was clearly beaten by the opposition for intensity, and then they ran away with the ball with more intensity too. Reckon Dimma comes down hard on that and it's why Gordon was initially favoured.

It probably looks worse due to his lace of pace though.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Without being unkind to Griffiths, we are lucky he hurt his finger. Even though Ben had been ordinary for a couple of months Hardwick was hesitant to move from 3 talls and then defensive smalls in his forward 50.

But Lloyd and Lennon (even though usually not at the same time) in for Morris and Gordon has been a vast improvement. Deledio's recent form as the leading 'tall' has been great and together they give us much more overall skill forward.

Vickery's recent form actually playing 'tall' means that we can play only two genuine talls and have some skilled good marking mediums in Lloyd, Lennon, Deledio.

Newman hanging on by his fingernails. Upgraded to Motlop and the forward line starts looking real good.

If Lennon and Lloyd (or Newman) don't perform Beanie is the perfect in.

Given that Newman is retiring at the end of the season, we don't have long to wait to find out what they'll do when he isn't around.

It's quite obvious you have no time for Ben since your love child, Beanie, come into your dreams. I've never been to a forum where someone is so obsessed with a individual to be honest. It's quite disturbing.

Yes I agree having mediums with marking power instead of an extra tall seems to be a better structure, which raises interesting questions about Griffiths future assuming Vickery stays at the club. He may well be an ace in trade negotiations.

Not unusual. Everyone used to be obsessed with Richo, me included. Also there used to be, and still is, a decent whack of negative obsession with individuals. Then there were player sponsers...

Good post LambMan.

It appears the Vickery vs Griffiths debate is settled for now. If Ben is not traded it will be good to have those two potentially competing for positions next season.

Interesting call TS.

I still see value in keeping Griffiths as back up CHB when Chaplin fades and if Elton doesn't quite cut it (I hope he makes it).

He's the smart crumbing player I've been dreaming of and you want to offload him?

We've been looking for a smart small forward that can kick goals out of his arze, and this guy can.
Around the ground he looks a bit like Rance too
Seems to have gotten used to the pace of the game and looks a bit quicker than when he started
Still waiting for a huge mark that he's been doing at the lower levels, so we haven't seen all his tricks yet

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

I'd like to see Newy given the sub's vest for the rest of the year (won't happen though) and have Lloyd & Lennon get full games leading into the finals - don't see the logic in having primarily half forwards coming on as subs.

Sorry for derailing thread, heres the thing. You can't keep them all. I'd like to keep him. But if you stand still you're dead, and you have to give something good to get something good. If I was the list manager (thank christ I'm not but anyway...), I'd make the call that we have Ty, Bean and Macca. Griff looks great and will have currency, but won't IMO be a superstar and we can do without him, package to trade for what we need. But thats just my opinion.

If nobody comes calling for him and we end up keeping him, fine, he goes and we get something good, even if he plays well for an opposition side, fine. Lot like Rhys Stanley I reckon, looks good but not quite.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Cannot keep them all

But there are 40 or 50 odd spots on the list

Can keep most of them

I would prefer to keep the 24 and under types, unless the offer is very strong

By the same token, I'd go very hard for dangerfield and / or trelor. Plus a couple key position spots (back, ruck)

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Marich can't ruck forever. Vickery / Griffiths ruck combo is coming.

Really want to see two things from Lloyd.
1) Will he improve again after his second afl preseason? Great improvement this year
2) How will he contribute in a tough game? Kicking three in big wins as a forward is good, but.... 2x North games are coming. We shall see.
