Sam Lloyd

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

From memory I saw a graph which showed Lloyd actually tested above average for endurance although average for speed.

With a couple of AFL preseasons under his belt, his running ability should be pretty good.

I noticed he got out on his own a lot last Thursday. Picked up a lot of ball on the wings.half forward and actually dropped a couple of chest marks when leading his opponent quite easily.

Also in the Grigg and Griff hash ups of their goal attempts, Lloyd both times was on his own free running into goal. Either his opponent was asleep or Lloydy ran him off his feet or dropped off at the right time as a good forward does.

I have read somewhere that he got a bit ahead of himself last year. So it was attitude that lead to non-selection more than form?

Can't recall the source so might be BS.

It was a good source.

First three of those games we were abysmal, any small forward would've starved. Last two Wet Coke was fairly soggy n would've thought he'd get a few against GWS, was he subbing or on all game?
Plenty of possible reasons why a first year at AFL level runs hot n cold. He's now got the second pre season under the belt n has a far greater understanding of how the team works n the intensity req'd. From the times he's shown a capacity for multiple goals you'd think a thirty to forty, full season is within his reach.

Then he needs to contribute in other ways. You need to remember, he's a 25 year old who's been playing at the 2nd tier before joining us. Surely he's had games where he has been quiet before. It's not something new that you need to find ways to get into the game if you can't get a touch or kick a goal. Yes, I think it was possibly endurance\fitness based, yes he appears to have worked hard and has improved.

However, I'll judge on performance not on potential. So far, his performance has been inconsistent. I want to see him lift, and give us something when he can't get hands on the pill. There's no excuses for lack of intensity or effort. The Melbourne game as I mentioned above, is a decent example of him trying to get involved when he's not troubling the scoreboard, as was the Brisbane game. I'm not sure if the Goal Assists is just the last person to kick the ball before the goal is scored or whether it's being involved in the chain that leads to the goal being kicked. Either way, it's probably something he can work on as well.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Great squad player. Will never be a star but is a guy who can come in and play a role, better player in a better team.

On this General, we need to remember he only had 1 year at VFL level before being drafted. He was playing at Delinquin & Mt Eliza in the preceding two years where the fitness levels would be nowhere near VFL level let alone an AFL pre-season.

This gives him massive scope to improve still.

Reckon you sell him well short here Sin.

As alluded above we've only just touched the sides fitness wise with Sam. If the coach can ride out the odd quiet game that comes with his role he could develop into one of the better medium forwards in the League ILO.

Love how he keeps his feet, is one touch & is one of the few these days genuinely dual-sided. Great traits.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

I'm with you, Leysy. Class act. Only two single-figure possession games - when he was the sub against West Coast in the wet, and the following week against GWS (can't remember who was the sub that day).

He's a really smart, very skilful footballer.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

You wonder if he has enough tricks to see him through the heavier tracks of June and July, but I've been super impressed so far.

Not really quick, hasn't yet taken the screamer marks he's supposed to take, just been efficient and seems to have a bit of upside to come. Looks ok so far

There aren't many heavy tracks these days Carts, but they will only serve to negate the one thing his opponent may have over him - leg speed.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Agree with Leysy.

He has footy smarts which make up for leg speed. He is a smaller version of Jack. Watch him closely. He is always at the fall of the ball and one step ahead of his defender.

I'm glad our game seems to have opened up because he isn't a muck rat in the vein of Milne or even Ballantyne. Not sure if he's suited to squirts from packs.

Even though he's not quick he uses guile to find space.

As you say mate heavy tracks are limited these days.

I think the freeway of 2015 is perfect for him.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Why are we quibbling about Shakira when he hasn't even got a nick name yet? Of course he's a dud who most or some of us like or hate. They all are.

What are we calling the germ?

*On a side note he's very important to our final four/premiership hopes this season and FWIW I'm declaring him a certain 100 gamer. (A big call given that he's almost 30.)

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Ball in hand, ball goes towards goal. Simple.

And I like it. Wonderful on both sides, if your slowish, this will help you get out of many a pickle.

We don't have enough of these types.

I think you're misunderstanding my point, or I haven't made it clearly. At 25, he should be mature enough to realise he has to get involved some other way if he's not kicking goals. Doesn't mean I don't think he has limited scope for improvement (I think he's got room), but he's not an 18 year old just learning the caper. Signs are good, but the jury is still out for mine. Just looking for consistent output, either on the scoreboard or otherwise.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

OK, yeah get did misunderstand you.

Think though, playing that role there will always be games you don't make an impact. Goes with the territory ILO.

I actually see him as a better wet weather player for that reason. His brillant first game was on a heavy track.

Not fast but accurate? Name's Sam? Then I submit Yosemite as a nickname.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

He's def small but does not bring the traditional small fwd playing style.
He plays more like a half fwd. he's not that front and square crumber as much either though he can kick goals from acute angles by swinging his leg across
