I thought he wouldn't make it. Thought he was too vanilla.

Boy was I wrong and more than happy to be.

Always had the nous, and he just gets the ball through the sticks without much bling.

Who says genuine small forwards need to be rappers?
I think he is vanilla. I watched him at Frankston and didn't see anything special but he just keeps kicking goals.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

He looks like he might be the next Andrew Krakouer - type small forward for us, just needs the opportunity to prove it......

He definitely looks like Krak to me with that slim body, no.27 on his back and tanned skin.

You gotta persevere with blokes this good at finding the goals from limited opportunities. His defensive work has improved and he looks much fitter.

You're absolutely right. Akermanis was this type. Early days he was fast but not real good. Was in and out of the team and couldn't really cement a spot. I Played junior rep footy with him so I always kept a close eye on him. But we all thought a decent forward flanker was about his ceiling. Boy were we wrong, became a gun. But the signs were there now that i look back. He took some cracking hangers and kicked some great goals in the middle of overall poor games. Lloyd is similar. He can kick goals from being an excellent kick and super footy smart. But paradoxically he really hasn't learnt how to play footy yet. Modern AFL footy that is. Its a different beast to anything he has seen before. But he gets it.

A couple of minutes prior to his 50m bomb goal he created what should have been Griggs 2nd goal by chasing down Simpson. It was neither slow or defensively poor. It was a player starting to get it. I reckon he will make it.

Wish he had Akers speed though. He was blistering.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

When coming from a lower level grade of footy it's always a bit of a shock to the system in your first year at AFL level. The year under his belt and another pre-season would have done him a lot of good, and maybe his first game was a reflection of this. He has immense goal sense, a keeper for now.

I really rate him so i hope that is not the moz for the young chap! :-X Not sure what weight or body shape the club want him to have but i still think he could slim down a bit, much like Dusty he is a little to big in the hips. The signs of improvement are there from last year though and if he tracks like he is we will have a great forward for years to come.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

He basically has taken Whites place on the list, interested to know who most would prefer now

As a forward, Lloydy all the way. White kicked 54 goals in 105 games for the Tigers. Lloydy has kicked 13 in 9 and he's still adjusting to the pace of AFL footy.

Nothing wrong with a small forward having some weight n power down low through the hips. Makes him hard to move off the ball n helps him turn n pivot in traffic.

If White was on our list, I'd be calling for Lloyd to get a game ahead of him.

Hahahaha... I love Matty! Hope he does extremely well. I just think Lloyd is capable of helping us become a top 4 team just like White helped Port become a top 4 team... the only difference is Lloyd is slower, but a better kick and has a better goal average.

Reckon Hunt is a closer version/replacment of/to White than Lloyd
True , but my point was Lloyd was only picked up because White had gone..

I'm starting to like Lloyd more, less mistakes thou he did drop a couple he should have taken last week

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Should play ever week regardless if he has a quiet week. Guys that can kick a bag like him don't fall off trees and are always a danger for an opposition team. Play him all year and he will kick 30-40 goals IMO.

Re: Welcome Sam Lloyd

Lloyd is an excellent field kick as well, up there with the best in the team. Some of his work up on to the wing during the game was a delight to watch. He really doesn't need to get the ball much because he doesn't turn it over and most of his work is constructive.
