The problem is that if we win next week and the Crusaders win next week, which is the probable scenario (both home semi finals), then we will not get the home town advantage in the final and beating the Crusdaers anywhere is hard enough, but at Jade Stadium in Christchurch, it is next to impossible, they had just crushed the Hurricanes (3rd) there by 20 points and four tries, with two of their All Blacks, Richie McCaw and Daniel Carter coming off the bench.
The Waratahs knew this going in and the only solution to this was to win with a bonus point, but for our captain to take a shot on goal with half an hour still to play (this also happened earlier in the match, when he should have kicked for touch instead of for goal) when we were a metre out could just have cost us any real chance we had of winning the Super 12.
Obviously there was no guarantee of getting that elusive fourth try, but to not even go for it, that is criminal. If the opposition keeps you out then good for them, but you have to try. When the decision was made to kick for goal early in the second half the crowd booed its own team, loudly. I have never been at a Waratah game where that has happened, but then again we knew the situation.
Whittaker said that he thought we still had plenty of time to score, which is true, but you have to take the chances when they present themselves, because things change so quickly and you may never get that opportunity again. And we didn't!!!
Winning just wasn't the issue, winning with a bonus point was. We could have been belted by 50 points and would have still finished second. So the only thing that really mattered was winning with the bonus point so we could top the table, and therefore claim a home final against the best team in the comp if everything ends up going the way it is meant to. Hopefully!!!
I'm done now, sorry for the rant :-X
