Rucking Hell

My ideal draft would be Williams & two of Bytel/Smith/Lewis/Foley/Joyce/Sparrow.

Then add Mitch Grigg. That's 1 forward/ruck & 3 mids, from a list management perspective very achievable & just what the doctor ordered.

The changes absolutely mean we need more support, if rucks can just grab the ball out of the contest we're in trouble.
Is is possible any of those mids could slide to our 3rd pick or will we need to do a trade to get a 2nd mid from that list?

Here's how I see it for the remaining mids

Foley 20-40
Sparrow 20-40
Bytel 30-50
Smith 30-50
Lewis 40-60
Joyce 40-60
Rowbottom - 40-60
Ross - 40-rookie

If we can stitch Grigg up on rookie wages that's a massive win, he can make an early impact.

Gotta feeling CCJ's gonna debut in that role next season.
Agree he is a real prospect but this last season he was managed so needs more experience before he is put to the wolves. Reckon he will be ripe 2020. For our ruck needs right now there is a Dogs player (can't remember his name) delisted that will provide help tp Nanks for a season

Yep, Tom Campbell who I also reckon would be a good get.

Possibly, thought injury prone. At 2 metres tall and only 27, if fit would have a few years left in him.

Does he really imply that?

I was only joking but yes you could make that implication from this comment. There's no way he would have meant it that way though.

“We may (use him in the ruck), but that’s certainly not the main reason we got him, to have him running around jumping in the ruck.

“You probably want to protect your good players from that. It’s only mad buggers like myself that play in the ruck.”

Looks like the Bombers are going to stitch up Zac Clarke.
If so our second ruck options look slimmer by the day....

Bet the Crows are going to be into CCJ this year if he goes well.

Here are 2 that are getting media coverage. Both are in the right age, and would be rookie material
Thurlow sounds like he is in the Nank mould, but not playing in a strong comp.

Fraser Thurlow

Height: 199cm
Weight: 102kg
DOB: 6/1/1993
Club: Southport

Regarded by former Melbourne coach Paul Roos as a player who deserves a chance to be on an AFL list, Thurlow is a strong and physical ruckman out of Southport. After spending time on Essendon’s list a few years back, the 200cm big man has been one of the NEAFL’s most dominant ruckman.

Darcy Fort

Height: 205cm
Weight: 99kg
DOB: 6/8/1993
Club: Central Districts

A lack of quality ruckmen in this year’s draft has Fort in the mix to be picked up by a club who needs big man depth. The 203cm ruckman missed six weeks with a wrist injury during the year but showed enough throughout the year to suggest he deserves a chance. Fort still has plenty of development left in him and is likely to benefit from being in a full-time program

Soldo is still only 22. He's got time to continue improving.

That's true Oldy, I think this is often forgotten when he's being discussed, in ruckman/big fella terms he's still a "baby".

Imo he's come a long way, but he still has a lot of improvement to come.

I can remember many years ago there was a big fella by the name of John Ronaldson who at the same age as Soldo is now, was nowhere near being a "player". He finished up being a premiership ruckman for us a few years later.

Don't write off big Ivvy yet.

I think the club sees more in Soldo than we do

I don't see Soldo becoming the next Gawn but, looking at what's available, I don't see anything materially better than what Soldo offers anyway so, until something better presents, I'm happy with the club's direction.

FWIW, I am also happy to see us re-rookie Chol for a similar reason.

I have been pleasantly surprised on how Soldo has continued to develop. He is using his size far more effectively by the end of this season and if he again makes some improvement (which I expect) he will be a decent alternative. He will never have the skills or athleticism of Nank but has other strengths in his height and mass.
I do not see anyone out there better at this stage. He is very similar to Preuss now who some posters wanted.

Who knows what our recruiters have in mind?

Very little coming forth so they are perhaps playing funny buggers and don't want to tip their hand.

On the other hand, they may not be looking for another ruck. Who knows, as I said.

For mine I can't see Nanks carrying the load again in 2019, and what happens if injury strikes him down?

Can't help wondering and cogitating about all of this.

Personally i think they have a player in mind that they may take if he slides to our selections and if this doesnt happen then they just rookie list Chol for another 2 years
