Rucking Hell

Hoping Balta can continue his improvement and play some senior matches this year.

His flexibility around the ground combined with his improvement/potential could be huge for us.

Balta played a fair bit of ruck at TAC level so whilst he would be an undersized ruck he would have far better technique than Grigga.

If rucks can grab the pill straight from the ball-up, let Lynch contest the forward-50 ruck contests and snap a few goals while Nank stays a kick behind the play and then pumps it back inside 50 to Jack and Tom.
Noticed in the footage of Fort (25yo, 205cm, 100kg Ruck from Central Districts) that he got a few kicks from central bounces. Kicked 30 goals as well.

In the latest Talking Tigers podcast Blair Hartley was asked about the ruck situation & whether Lynch would pinch hit in the ruck..
He avoided the question but said it had been discussed & they were aware of the situation but they were keeping their cards close to their chest.
Sounds like there's a plan in play. Have to see what unfolds.

Hmmm, I might be seeing things that aren't there but Chol being delisted and keeping MUM about the ruck situation might be code for taking a forward/ruck with our first pick. Here's hoping anyway.

Surely that first pick wouldn't be ready to go so I reckon you might be hearing what you want to hear. The ruck situation will be filled by our mature players.

Well it just seems strange that Hartley didn't want to open up about our ruck stocks, normally this should be a pretty transparent verbal exchange. Any reasons why you think he was keeping his cards close to his chest?

Who are tha type Bullus we might target Ruck /Forward ?

Bailey Williams is the obvious pick in our draft range.

They could be playing their cards close to their chest as again looking at something outside of the norm as we did with Grigg in the past and doesn't want to show our hand early, therefore getting a jump on the other clubs.

I can't see how a kid drafted would have much impact and I also really don't see us going from a very small structure to the complete opposite when we've just finished as minor premiers. We'll be going taller with Lynch, probably close to 0% chance we will be going taller again, especially as the mantra for this draft seemed to be about going speed again.

I suspect we will concentrate on mids that have a burst of pace rather than slow ones. Reckon O'Halloran might be quite high on our draft board.

Possibly, although I reckon Williams gets games next year, he's already 94kg. I'm tipping 5-10 matches depending on where he lands. As for speed, Williams is quicker than O'Halloran, keep pointing this out, 198cm guys who can run faster than most mids are as rare as hens teeth.

Williams is a solid boy for his age, What was his combine results like

Don't have the full data but his leap is elite, 94cm in the running vertical which puts him in Ryder territory. Not sure about tank, this obviously critical but given CCJ ran a 12 beep I'd guess he would be in similar territory if not better. 2.94 seconds for the sprint is elite for a bloke his size, faster than any talls in the pool including Ben King. Speaking of which their respective stats are pretty much neck & neck, both take an average of 3 contested grabs a game, Ben King is 2 goals a game vs 1.71 for Williams, although worth noting that Williams gets more shots on goal. Possessions also similar with 14 vs 13, hit outs overwhelmingly in favour of Williams. I get the fact Twomey doesn't rate him but I'm going out on a limb and calling his prediction of pick 52 way overboard. I respect Twomey but this doesn't stack up in the slightest.

Gotta feeling CCJ's gonna debut in that role next season.

I was just going to ask the VFL watchers how far off they reckon Criminal is.

He looks to me like he could expect a taste in 2020 and push for a gig around the same time as MRJ :afro

I like what I saw, however I’d say his a long way off playing regular senior footy, still so light. In a perfect world I think we’d see him play a few games as a 3rd forward tall option before tucking at the top

You're probably right about Williams but if he's not available then I reckon look at Tom Campbell and drip feed CCJ into the team in 2019.

We need midfielders and Ely Smith looks like a beauty who might still be around at pick 37

I am confident that we will get a good midfielder in the second round, whether that be Ely Smith, Jack Bytel or Tom Lewis.

got 1 in mind? hehe

It has been written that we struggled ruck wise, especially against the Pies, who had two very tall ruckmen.

Maybe the changes for 2019 means we don't need another ruck.

I just don't know what to think.

Nanks did a sterling job last year, but he really just can't carry the load again, surely??

My ideal draft would be Williams & two of Bytel/Smith/Lewis/Foley/Joyce/Sparrow.

Then add Mitch Grigg. That's 1 forward/ruck & 3 mids, from a list management perspective very achievable & just what the doctor ordered.

The changes absolutely mean we need more support, if rucks can just grab the ball out of the contest we're in trouble.
