Rucking Hell

Personally i think they have a player in mind that they may take if he slides to our selections and if this doesnt happen then they just rookie list Chol for another 2 years

That sounds right to me, except that rookies are listed one year at a time.

Nankervis, Soldo, CCJ and Chol (or alternative junior) will be a pretty young ruck group with plenty of upside.

Nank been the oldest at 24, doubt there’d be any other team having there oldest Ruck at 24. I think we are a chance to pick up a mature Ruck

With the new rules I can't see how we can possibly play without a genuine second ruck/third forward next season and at the moment I don't see it on our list and I can't see how we get one.

Having said that I would have said I can't see how we can possibly win the premiership with Shaun Grigg as our second ruckman so what the hell would I know.

I don't know either TBR. Have not seen where there is a ruckman available from anywhere.

Then again hopefully our recruiters have someone in mind, and just keeping mum. Quite a conundrum!!

Would this rule allow someone to grab Mitch Grigg before the draft ??

I doubt he’ll play a lot of AFL footy in the ruck, however we also have Miller on the list who has played in the ruck and may end up been a handy pinch hit ruck

I saw Balta pinch hit ruck in the VFL. He's no Max Gawn but I would select him over Soldo in a heartbeat

Just read that WC have taken former Gold Coast ruck Keegan Brooksby (who had a good season in the SANFL) as part of this new rookie rule where we took MAV Weller.

Would’ve thought Brooksby would’ve been more suited with our limited ruck options.

Can we assume CCJ is earmarked for more 2nd ruck duties in 2019?

I like him but I’d reckon his a long way off impacting at AFL level, personally think will see Lynch helping Nank out a bit rightly or wrongly

I can imagine Lynch and Jack taking some ballups and throwins in the forward line while Nank stays a kick behind play. That will help him see out games to some extent.

The real concern will be centre bounces, particularly with rucks being able to take the ball out of the air, while the 6-6-6 rule will mean our backs don't have an extra man to cover the quick takeaway from the middle if we lose it. We'll be vulnerable to quick scores from the middle.

The preseason will be interesting to see how Soldo and CuJo track or whether a mobile tall with a big leap - Chol, Moore or Balta - are given some ruck duties.

We ranked 3rd for avg centre clearances in 2018. Don't be fooled with our impotence at clearances around the ground. All teams will be vulnerable to centre clearances with 6-6-6 but, we win more centre clearances so less of a concern for us. Also with Jack and Lynch up forward we put more pressure back on opposition teams in terms of contested marking ability.

We will have the perfect fix for this in Towner.

eg...

Round 2

Q1:
- Grundy up against Nank in our forward line with three minutes left on the clock
- Grundy takes the short throw in out of the air
- Towner, brought in for an injured Caddy, roams the front of the ruck contest and drives in off his left leg with a shoulder to Grundy's ribs forcing him backwards and into Nank's arms
- Grundy crashes to the ground with the ball pinned beneath him, Nank on top and Towner adding an extra 90 kilos plus momentum to the crunch
- Grundy hobbles off
- Next contest resuts in a mongrel kick that travel 16 metres and it is marked by Towner who kicks the Tigers 5th goal of the first quarter

Rest of the game:
- Grundy sits on the pine (aluminium) with his tracksuit on, cradling possibly broken ribs
- Nank gets 60 hit outs, 35 to advantage
- Tiges go on to win by 80
- Grundy sits out the next 7 games
- Scabbies finish 13th

Following Monday:
- AFL announce a change to the umpiring at boundary throw-ins to stop the "Towner Maneuver"

Round 3
Q1:
- Lobb up against Nank in our forward line
- Takes the short throw in out of the air
- Nank doesn't contest very hard but sets himself and buries Lobb into the hard clay of the Sydney Showground

How any days till R1 again???

Fair effort from Nank considering Lobb is now playing for Freo ;)

we must surely think CCJ is ready, we aint getting any ruck backups

What ready-made ruck backups are you going to get in the ND? 5 or 6 years before they're ready. I like the strategy we've taken in the last few years of picking up more mature ruckmen who have already been tried but maybe aren't getting enough game time. Might be able to pickup a rookie ready to go from the second tier competitions still. Our strategy of clearing out the mature 2nd string players at our club (CEllis, Miles, Lloyd) making more sense now with us picking up 4 midfielders in the National draft.

That's sort of my point, you can pick up those state leaguers a dime a dozen as rookies. Pretty hard to get good ruckmen though from that level. There's some ordinary ruckmen playing at AFL level just cause they're tall.

Surprised we haven't taken anyone as back up for Nanks. If he gets injured then we are in strife. IMO we don't have anyone at the club that can play ruck at elite level. Soldo has a way to go, CCJ has promise but needs another year at the very least and Choi is well Choi and we never know what to expect from him. Hope the club know what they are doing but to me they are being a little short sighted

Who could we have picked up in the draft of ruck size who is ready and would be any better than Soldo out of interest?
