Rucking Hell

Nice sort of pick up. Has weaknesses, may end up a plodder if he doesn't work on his conditioning. Also doesn't seem to be that athletic. But he has real size, moves and kicks well and has a competitive streak.

Mummy is the perfect comparison. If he puts in the hard work on the track and in the weights room and can get from contest to contest he might be a beast.

However if he loafs he could be a bust and a liability (with the odd bit of grunt flair and contested marking)

Thought a specific thread to moan about our ruck stocks makes sense as opposed to trying to separate into the various players.

How screwed are we ? iVan is a shadow. Hampson is more productive with a super model. Plasma is playing like a Princess. Big Ben, like his namesake, only chimes in once an hour.

Soldo ? Is he a realistic chance or are we living in hope ? Chol ? Will he be ready next year ?
Really great point. Hampson has shown a bit this year especially considering that he had both ankles reconstructed last year and missed most of the pre season and the options get very thin after that.

Love to get young Nank.

Yep, was some whispers last week, wonder if Lennon , Conca or Sheds would like Sin City ?

Would be happy to swap Sheds even though we would need to pay some of his salary

i would be a bit wary of a 199cm ruck. he would want either a good leap or to be very strong.

As long as we move players and not picks.

Shoot I’d send Lids up there for Sydney 1st and Nanks.

Just had a look at AFL Tables about Toby Nankervis.

Looks to be a players who should be a key target.

Averages about 10 possessions a game but came on in his last 3 games with his best disposal figures, around 15 possessions a game.

Good tackle numbers. Obviously spent more time in the ruck as his hitout numbers increased to around and above 20. However his game time usually sits at around 60 to 70 % except for one game when he had 79% game time.

Some concerns, barely goes at 2 marks a game and his contested marking less than half a game. Some surprises , likes to have a running bounce and good 1%.

But here is the kicker. His uptake in form was in rds 19, 20, 21 and the semi final against Adelaide last year all in games the Swans won.

Was obviously covering for injuries (Tippet and maybe Naismith) but seemed to grow a leg with responsibility.

Ideal kid to bring in. Work him so that he builds that tank and give him the ruck keys and let the kid develop.

Forget Prestia and Caddy. This is the trade that offers the most upside.

Not sure about forget Prestia.

But to me Nankervis looks exactly like what we need, loves to throw the wait around mini mumford style.

Perfect replacement for Ty in fact is everything Ty was not, plus a bit more.

Forget the injury prone midget. Pick 6 will get you someone better.

Forget the plodder Caddy. Lids this year and FA compon next year better than caddy.

Lennon for Nankervis sounds OK.

Yeah like Toby. A brute of a ruck that can kick.

However we do it getting Prestia while retaining 6 should be the priority of this trade period.

IMHO we are still one ruckman short of being a really good team again in 2019. Shame we did not get Scott Lycett from WC.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Lynch is not a ruckman. Has he ever played in the ruck?

Who then is going to be our back up ruck to Nanks? he is a serviceable ruck, and a very good member of the team but once again IMO he needs a back up.

Those are my thoughts for the day.

Yes Lynch can ruck. Whether we want him to ruck is another topic all together. Balme's thoughts on that:

It's a pity he implies Nanks is not a good player ;D

Does he really imply that?

Definitely, not implied as a negative though. Dimma has instilled a culture where hard work and character are celebrated over talent, and I think Balme’s comments reflects that.

It’s done us extremely well not to waste yearly draft picks or large chunks of the salary cap on rucks over the past 10 years. Since Vickery, by my recollection we’ve only spent 3 picks traded in the 2nd/3rd round for 22-25yo mature rucks over 10 years, with a couple of rookie projects. This allowed us to spend the rest of our available currency on more important positions.

Apart from wanting to preserve Lynch’s body, I’d hate to spent a million dollars a year on a player who is jumping around in the ruck doing nothing for 40% of the game instead of winning games of football by winning crucial contests near goal.

Our approach over the last 10 years is perfect and Nankervis is perfect for the position.

We were one of the most moneyball style of clubs in the early 2010’s remember, so it’s no surprise we’re the first club to really downvalue the ruck position like we have.

We’re not going into 2019 lacking, we’re going in with an advantage.

If rucks can grab the pill straight from the ball-up, let Lynch contest the forward-50 ruck contests and snap a few goals while Nank stays a kick behind the play and then pumps it back inside 50 to Jack and Tom.

Nank needs back up for sure but I reckon he's primed for a huge pre season.Look out! ;)
